"It is an exceptionally quiet, ocean-going submarine that has the same ‘Albacore’ [hullform] hydrodynamics of Suffren, and with it a very powerful combat system and sonar suite. "

Naval Group is offering the Blacksword to other customers which is a conventional version of their Suffren class nuclear submarine and very advanced. Should be very quiet. Maybe more than German or Korean SSKs?

It might be too expensive but hopefully we get some of the technology integrated into out Scorpene ( Li-ion, combat system, Sonar).

IMO it ain't modern if the Navy doesn't have:

  • Dedicated AAW Destroyer
  • Ocean-going attack submarine with land attack capability
  • at least one flat deck ship
  • up to date command and control ship
  • armed MPA and dedicated sub-hunter planes
  • long-range naval strike bomber

Yeah nah about this part, unless its a stealth bomber.

Also must have warships equipped with land attack missile.
Exocet Block III has land attack mode.

But like all imported missile, the throw range is <300km. Surface warship would have to close in very near to hostile shore,. Not the smartest idea as enemy sensor would've picked it up.

Submarines on the other hands are designed to sneak in the littorals.

long-range naval strike bomber
Rafale with Storm Shadow is good enough for now. I think only the US, Russia and China have dedicated naval bombers.

However something like China's 200+ Xi'an H-6 is a very serious capability in a war.

Too bad they put RHIB on where the secondary gun is. We usually fitted 40mm auto cannon there up until FPB-57

"PT PAL is collaborating with Naval Group to become a partner for the whole local production of Scorpene submarines," said PT PAL Senior Executive Vice President (SEVP) Transformation Management, Satriyo Bintoro at the Iftar event in Central Jakarta, Thursday (21/3/2024) .

The Scorpene submarine is indeed one of the best in the world. Moreover, Naval Group has even updated its proposal for a Scorpene type submarine for Indonesia that will use full lithium-ion batteries (LIB). Thus, this Scorpene Evolved submarine will have the longest endurance compared to the previous Scorpene variant. Based on various information, Scorpene Evolved is capable of diving for 80 days, 78 of which are in the diving position, with an operational range of more than 8,000 nautical miles, has a lower indiscretion rate, and is able to maintain top speed for longer. This capacity is available because LIBs can store and distribute more energy with shorter charging times than lead-acid batteries.

Fincantieri press release

Fincantieri and the Indonesian Ministry of Defence have signed a 1.18-billion-euro contract, within the framework of collaborative relations initiated by the Italian Ministry of Defence, for the supply of two PPA Units. PPA is a highly flexible ship with an outstanding technological standard. It has the capacity to serve multiple functions, ranging from patrol with sea rescue capacity to Civil Protection operations and first line fighting vessel.

The contract was signed by Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri, and by the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, in the presence of Dario Deste, General Manager of the Naval Vessels Division.

The ships subject to the order – originally destined for the Italian Navy – are currently under construction and fitting at the Integrated Shipyard in Riva Trigoso-Muggiano.

The interest of the Indonesian Ministry of Defence in PPA Units stems from the Maritime Campaign in the Far East of the Francesco Morosini, the second ship of the Italian Navy’s PPA class, which also stopped over in Indonesia in July 2023. The transaction can catalyze additional synergies in the operational, industrial, and technological fields between the two countries. The Units will be able to support Indonesia in protecting national interests and contribute to the stability of the delicate Indo-Pacific strategic quadrant.

As part of the transaction, Fincantieri will act as the prime contractor towards the Indonesian Ministry of Defence and will specifically coordinate the other industrial partners, including Leonardo, for the customization of the ships’ combat system and the provision of related logistic services. The parties will define the relevant agreements in compliance with the applicable legislation, including that relating to transactions between related parties.

The effectiveness of the contract is subject to the necessary authorizations from the competent authorities. to transactions between related parties.

“This contract is a milestone for the development of a strategic partnership between our Group and Indonesia. We view this as the first of many significant collaborative opportunities with the Indonesian Ministry of Defence, following a long-term partnership approach thanks to the structural support of our institutions, starting with the Ministry of Defence and the Italian Navy. Southeast Asia is a region of central geopolitical importance where Fincantieri aims to strengthen its presence, as defined in the Business Plan”.

Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri

Now waiting for the FREMM to be effective

The good thing about this deal is delivery time, other than that...
The ship itself definitely good but I doubt that its the best choice for us.
Will we only buy 2 unit?
