Together with US Company, Indonesian Navy Builds Sea Depth Detection Ship Over 6,000 Meters

JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com - The Indonesian Navy (Navy) built a ship that can detect sea depths of more than 6,000 meters. Because, so far, Indonesian Navy Don't have a ship with the ability to get there yet. "God willing, in 2025 we will have a more sophisticated ship to (detect) a depth of 10,000 (meters)," said Commander of the Indonesian Navy Hydro-Oceanography Center (Pushidrosal) Vice Admiral Nurhidayat at Kolinlamil Headquarters, North Jakarta, Wednesday (29/3/2023).

Currently, the Coordinating Ministry for Maritime Affairs and Investment (Kemenko Marves) and the Indonesian Navy are working with the United States industry, OceanX to build ships capable of detecting sea depths of more than 6,000 meters. "We are exploring cooperation with OceanX from the US which focuses on exploration. The ship is relatively more sophisticated and the depth can be more than 6,000 meters," said Acting Deputy for Maritime Resources Coordination of the Coordinating Ministry Marves Firman Hidayat on the same occasion. Firman said the ship's construction also did not rule out the possibility of involving China.

There is also technology from China that can reach 10,000 (meters), that we will also explore cooperation," Firman said. Meanwhile, Nurhidayat said, detection ships or surveyors are important to have to detect underwater, such as volcanoes that are prone to causing earthquakes or tsunamis. "These data are very important, especially the earthquake areas in Mentawai and Ambon," Nurhidayat said.

Currently, the Indonesian Navy only has two surveyor ships, one of which is KRI Spica-934 which can detect sea depths of up to 6,000 meters. KRI Spica-934 is currently used by the Indonesian Navy and dozens of scientists from various universities to research volcanoes under the Flores Sea. The research was carried out through the 2023 Jala Citra Expedition. The Indonesian Navy dispatched 40 soldiers from Pushidrosal who were released using KRI Spica-934 from Kolinlamil Pier, North Jakarta, today, Wednesday.

Does it make sense, submarine program with the name and specification of "submarine class 1800-2800 tonnage with AIP" only US$500 million per unit?
