JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – Defense industry cooperation between Indonesia and Qatar has strengthened again after Barzan Holdings signed a strategic agreement with Republikorp worth US$2.3 billion, equivalent to IDR 37.95 trillion.

This agreement is part of Indonesia's efforts to modernize its defense system with financial and technological support from Qatar. The agreement was signed at the Doha International Maritime Defense Exhibition & Conference (DIMDEX) 2026 in Doha, Qatar, on January 20, 2026. One of the main points of this collaboration is the establishment of a joint venture company that will lead operations in Indonesia.

The signing was carried out by Barzan Holdings Group CEO Eng. Mohamed Al Sadah and Republikorp Founder Norman Joesoef, and witnessed by Qatari Defense Minister Sheikh Saud Al Thani. The framework of this cooperation includes updating and upgrading defense systems in the maritime and land domains.

The joint venture is aimed at driving a large-scale integrated modernization program to improve the operational readiness and interoperability of Indonesian National Armed Forces (TNI) systems, with direct support from the Government of Qatar.

Maritime and Land Modernization Focus

In the maritime sector, this collaboration includes the integration of advanced mission systems and the implementation of next-generation digital solutions. These steps are aimed at strengthening the reliability and readiness of Indonesia's maritime fleet in the long term.

Meanwhile, in the land sector, this partnership focuses on the integration and improvement of various critical subsystems, from precision weapons systems to munitions and other supporting platforms. This effort is expected to strengthen the overall national land defense capacity.

Norman Joesoef assessed that this collaboration is not merely commercially valuable but also strategic for bilateral relations between the two countries.

"The significance of this partnership goes far beyond hardware acquisition; it is a testament to the strengthening bilateral relationship between Indonesia and Qatar," Norman said in a written statement on Wednesday (January 21, 2026).

He added that Barzan's financial support and technology supply are crucial factors in accelerating the national defense industry's technology roadmap, while simultaneously enhancing the TNI's technological superiority.

The Role of the National Defense Industry

For your information, Republikorp has been a strategic partner of the Indonesian Government in promoting the independence of the defense industry. Through a joint venture scheme, the company engages with international manufacturers and technology owners to build domestic production capabilities.

Barzan Holdings is a Qatari defense company tasked with maintaining and developing the country's defense capabilities, while also opening opportunities for research collaboration, knowledge transfer, and defense technology development.

This collaboration with Indonesia is considered one of Barzan's strategic projects in the Southeast Asia region.

On January 11, 2025, the Head of the Turkish Defence Agency (SSB), Prof. Haluk Görgün, announced the successful launch of the second and third I-class frigates, marking a significant milestone in Turkiye's naval modernization efforts. The vessels were launched by two shipbuilding companies belonging to TAIS Shipyards.

The eighth vessel built for the Turkish Naval Forces under the MILGEM 6th–12th İstif-Class Frigates Procurement Project — constructed within the TAİS-STM OG joint venture — was ceremonially launched: TCG İÇEL (F-518).

STM, Türkiye’s engineering power at sea, continues to equip the Turkish Navy with domestically produced warships for the Blue Homeland. As the main contractor and detail designer of Türkiye’s first national frigate, TCG İSTANBUL (F-515), STM — together with the TAİS Joint Venture— has passed another important milestone in the production of seven sister frigates to TCG İSTANBUL.

The eighth ship of the program, TCG İÇEL (F-518), was launched at Sefine Shipyard on 1 September during a ceremony attended by Vice President of Defence Industries Mustafa Murat Şeker

SSB Vice President and STM Chairman of the Board İhsan Kaya; senior officials from the producing partner institutions; representatives of subcontractors; leaders of various agencies; and numerous Turkish Naval Forces and shipyard personnel. The ship’s ceremonial float-out into the shipyard’s floating dock was conducted symbolically.
