TERMA RADAR SELECTED FOR INDONESIAN NAVY HOSPITAL ASSISTANCE SHIPS

Terma was recently awarded a contract to supply a SCANTER 6002 radar for the latest Indonesian Navy’s Hospital Assistance Ship (BRS). The radar delivery is planned for June 2021. The award follows a previous contract signed in 2019 to supply a similar radar for the BRS “Wahidin Soedirohusodo”, delivered in January 2021.

Jakarta, May 27 2021 - Hospital ships are vessels designed to act as floating medical treatment facilities for humanitarian missions or for use in war zones. Under the new contract, Terma will deliver the radar in June 2021 to support the latest Indonesian Navy Hospital Assistance Ship (BRS).

The Indonesian Navy’s BRS built in Surabaya by the Indonesian state-owned shipyard PT PAL is 124 meters long, 21.8 meters wide, and able to host more than 600 people including crew, troops, and patients. According to PT PAL, the BRS can accommodate medical personnel to carry-out operational missions equivalent to those of a regular hospital. The BRS will be fitted with polyclinic facilities, emergency rooms, a radiology unit, and more.

Indonesia being prone to natural disasters such as earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, and tsunamis, assets such as the Hospital Ships are paramount to promptly ensure rescue and evacuation missions when needed. For this specific capability, each Hospital Ship is equipped with two helicopter landing spots, ensuring that the personnel, as well as the patients, can be readily and safely moved to and from the vessel.

The SCANTER 6002 is a surveillance radar with unparalleled helicopter landing control capabilities, which perfectly suits the missions carried out by the Hospital Ships.

Throughout the years, Terma has supplied numerous mission critical solutions in Indonesia, for all theatres of operations (air, land and sea). The main customers include the Indonesian Navy and Air Force, the Indonesian Coast Guards (Bakamla) and Sea and Coast Guard (KPLP), the Directorate General of Sea Transportation (DGST), and Jakarta Soekarno–Hatta International Airport.

In January 2019, Terma was awarded a major contract for the supply of complete C-Series Combat suites for four KCR-60 Fast Attack Craft also including SCANTER surveillance radars.

“Indonesia is a very important market for the development of Terma in the region and beyond” said Anupam Narain Mathur, VP & GM Terma Asia Pacific. “Through strong partnerships and close collaboration, Terma aims at supporting Indonesia to improve its capability in developing and maintaining mission critical systems, ensuring self-reliance and in the end human safety”.

I still wonder if I would live long enough to see any ship bearing the name KRI Wilwatikta. And if there will be one, I surely hope its worth of her namesake (its one heavy name to bear). I also wonder if there will be a boat bearing the name KRI Gandiwa

Indonesia, Sweden sign cooperation contract on warship maintenance

PT PAL Indonesia President Director Kaharuddin Djenod and BAE Systems BOFORS AB CEO Lena Gillström signed the cooperation agreement virtually that was borne witness by Indonesian Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia, Kamapradipta Isnomo on Thursday (May 27),(Handout-KBRI Stockholm)

Jakarta (ANTARA) - State-owned shipbuilding company PT PAL Indonesia inked a cooperation agreement with Swedish defense equipment producer BAE Systems BOFORS AB for warship maintenance, repair, and overhaul.

PT PAL Indonesia President Director Kaharuddin Djenod and BAE Systems BOFORS AB CEO Lena Gillström signed the cooperation agreement virtually and was borne witness by Indonesian Ambassador to Sweden and Latvia, Kamapradipta Isnomo on Thursday (May 27), the Indonesian Embassy in Stockholm noted in a written statement released on Friday.

The cooperation agreement will provide Indonesian warships and patrol ships using the BOFORS technology with access to repair and maintenance at PT PAL Indonesia instead of in Sweden.

The cooperation also involves transfer of technology and knowledge in which experts and engineers of BOFORS and PT. PAL will cooperate in ship maintenance and repair.

The Indonesian Embassy in Stockholm will intensively monitor negotiations on the implementation of the cooperation agreement in order to comply with the national regulations and enable BOFORS to have a binding working partner in Indonesia.

BOFORS initiated the cooperation at the end of 2020 to establish cooperation with PT PAL in the field of ship maintenance, repair, and overhaul through the Teaming Agreement Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (TA MRO).

In his address at the signing of the cooperation agreement, the ambassador affirmed that TA MRO will potentially pioneer progress in defense cooperation between Indonesia and Sweden.

He highlighted that the embassy will continue to prioritize the format of cooperation in enhancing bilateral cooperation between both nations.

Jakarta focuses on state of navy following death of 53 crew at sea

JAKARTA -- Indonesia aims to expand its submarine fleet by as much a triple its current line up to 12 vessels, multiple defense sources here say, just a month after one of its subs was determined to be lost, killing its entire crew of 53.
The move comes in response to repeated Chinese incursions into its waters. Jakarta will also beef up its fleet of corvettes.
The country had deployed five submarines, but lost one, the KRI Nanggala-402. Indonesia ranks third in the world with the area of waters that fall under its exclusive economic zone, but the size of its submarine fleet pales in comparison to countries such as Japan, which ranks sixth and has 20 vessels.

Defense Minister Prabowo Subianto has indicated that the country will step up investment in military equipment in the wake of the sub accident. As for submarines, Indonesia is pursuing a joint production agreement with South Korea, while France, Russia and Turkey have offered to export the vessels. Japan is exploring the idea of selling submarines to Jakarta.

Its wont be easy for them to bag the deal.
In other hand, Japan can providing such big economical deal. The one that not realted directly to defence sector but still promising. In other hand japan could make an offer (perhaps a little by force) for us to take loan from them. The one who could make all partied happy had big possibility to win.

(Remeber 30FFM, without much talk they almost penetrate Indonesia market)

Last paragraph of the article.

"Submarines from Japan would be more state-of-the-art, being much quieter and offering more time of operation underwater. But the prices would be higher and the technology transfer conditions would be more sensitive."

Cmiiw...iirc the issue with Soryu deal for Australia was that Japan refused to give ToT its battery technology to Australia.

How submarines are going to help with "incursions" , especially taking place in the EEZs?
Submarines are not patrol boats or fast intervention boats; they are "silent hunters" meant to defend mainland or operate at post-EEZ locations to gather intelligence.

And any reason for them to provide ToT on critical parts to anybody? I don't see any. They can broden the ToT on construction and building, promote joint production, integration and MRO to begin with, but nobody would simply offer ToT of critical systems (CMS, Propulsion, Sensors) on the golden platter.

You should Watch "Hunt For Red October" the scene when Dallas try to fly.

Other than that, just inagine
Wkwk...

We currently lack of any surface or underwater combatant, so a bunch number of subs is great tho, only if that sub is State to the art machine, not Copy, even outdated sub.

To counter incursions more patrol assets are needed, combined with UAVs and USVs, or like the ones operated by Bakamla /CG . And these are usually cheap platforms operated by a small crew.
Like multiply number of KCR 60 quick as possible and accelerate OPV project. I am sure a dozen of each can be procured in a few years for about 1$ billion.

Main point :
You need friends to intimidate stronger enemy. Even if the friend of yours refuse to do so, by claiming that they got your back, those enemy at least will change his/her behavior.

To be honest even if they willing to do that, Indonesia is not ready with preparation. Thats needs lot of funds and different knowledges than before to be mastered.
