Erşat Salihi: 'Kirkuk Special Force' should be established

Iraqi Turkmen Front (ITC) Kirkuk Deputy Erşat Salihi touched upon the agreement between Kirkuk and the Iraqi Kurdish Regional Government (IKRG).

Emphasizing that this agreement is "incomplete", Turkmen Deputy Salihi reminded that according to the Iraqi Constitution, the Peshmerga are only responsible for protecting the borders of the KRG.

Noting that the Peshmerga acted under the influence of political parties, Salihi demanded the establishment of the Kirkuk Special Force affiliated to the Iraqi central government to protect Kirkuk from the terrorist organization ISIS.

Speaking to Anadolu Agency, the Turkmen Deputy said that this special force to be established could include Arabs and Kurds in addition to Turkmens.

'GOVERNMENT OF RECONCILIATION MUST BE ESTABLISHED'

Salihi also stated that a government with a political majority in Iraq cannot be successful.

"A government of reconciliation should be established in Iraq, including Turkmens." Salihi said that it is important to establish an inclusive government with a new vision and long-term strategy in order to get rid of the country's political and economic problems.

Turkmen Deputy Salihi argued that otherwise the new government would be no different from the previous failed governments, and demanded that independent deputies, who gained weight in the parliament as a result of the last elections, should be included in the government.

'A GOVERNMENT WITHOUT TURKMEN SHALL BE INCOMPLETE'

Emphasizing the necessity of not excluding any party in the new government, Salihi said, "A government without Turkmens would be incomplete. Turkmens should be given a ministry or vice-presidential task in the new government." expressed his opinion.

Salihi also argued that the Turkmens could not evaluate the last election well, adding, "It would have been possible to get the chance to participate in the election more seriously and in a planned manner and to enter the parliament with a larger number of deputies." said.

Iraq to Receive ‘Advanced Modern’ Air Defense System:

Iraqi Air Defense Commander Lieutenant-General Maan al-Saadi revealed in an interview that the country may receive “advanced modern” air defense systems this year.

Without revealing the supplier’s identity, the commander told Iraqi News Agency that “contracts were signed” recently “to support the Air Defense Command and raise combat capabilities.”

Anti-Drone Systems

The revelation comes over a month after al-Saadi told the outlet that the government was looking to obtain upgraded anti-drone systems to counter the threat posed by small unmanned aerial systems.

“We have anti-drone systems to deal with small drones, but they are limited and few, so the government, headed by the Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, seeks to obtain a better quality of these systems to address all the threats that affect officials and vital places in Iraq in Baghdad and the provinces.”

Plan to Bolster Air Defense

The lieutenant-general said that the country possesses systems to counter long and medium-range missiles and artillery shells but requires more of them.

He added that the Iraqi military’s air defense branch made a capacity-building plan to bolster its air defense and presented it before the defense council for approval. He said that air defense officials had selected some foreign-made air defense systems after field visits.

Iraq has long been seeking a modern air defense system against a range of threats such as drones, missiles, and artillery shells. The country’s parliament reportedly allocated an undisclosed amount of money for the system last year.

Iraq’s Quest for Foreign Systems

The country has reportedly courted Russia, China, and Turkey to purchase air defense equipment after receiving little support from the US.

Head of the Iraqi parliament security and defense committee, Hakim Al-Zamili, told Amman-based Al-Ghad in 2018 that the country is seeking the Russian S-400 air defense system, as the US was “unwilling” to provide systems that ensure “comprehensive protection.”

“That is why Iraq needs to have its own systems,” he added. “It is our right to obtain them.”

A military parade was held in Baghdad on January 6 in honor of the 103rd anniversary of the creation of the Iraqi army. The military parade was hosted by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani and members of the government. It is worth noting that the military equipment of the Iraqi army is widely represented by manufacturers from different countries; quite a lot of military equipment is Russian and American-made. At the parade one could see Iraqi tanks, Russian-made T-90S, and T-72M1 “Lion of Babylon”, Pantsir-S1 air defense systems, TOS-1A “Solntsepek” heavy flamethrower vehicles, BMP-3 and BMP-1 armored personnel carriers, MLRS BM-21 "Grad" and other military equipment. The parade included Iraqi tanks, American-made M1 Abrams, M113 armored personnel carriers and Humvee armored vehicles, M109A5 self-propelled guns and other military equipment. Iraqi aviation was represented by Chinese-Pakistani-made JF-17 Block fighters, which are replacing American F-16 aircraft, Russian-made Mi-35M helicopters and other aircraft.
