Israel’s military confirmed its attack on Iran early Saturday, saying it had hit military targets.

“In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel – right now the Israel Defense Forces is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” spokesman Daniel Hagari said.

The U.S. had urged Israel not to hit sensitive targets like Iran’s nuclear facilities or oil fields, and governments around the world had cautioned against further escalation amid concerns the violence could spin out of control.

Israel is reported to be using F-16 fighter planes to launch air-based ballistic missiles (ALBM) outside of Iranian airspace to conduct the attack. Some of the targets hit include the Bardisan Camp near Qom in Iran; the Sanayee Khani facility in Yaftabad, Tehran, belonging to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard’s Air Force and specializing in missile production; the Shahriar base of the Iranian Revolutionary Guards; and Tartus, Syria.

Iran has previously said that it would conduct immediate counterattacks against Israel should they launch any strikes directly against Iranian targets. Iran has refrained from responding before; however, this attack is the first time since the Iran-Iraq War of the 1980s that Tehran itself has come under direct attack.

Seems like Israeli response is limited in scope, and likely that Iranians will downplay it to de-escalate.

They're not going to target anything critical. The U.S. Government has ensured that Iran's energy infrastructure and nuclear facilities are off the table unless Iran escalates further in return.

This strike is designed to be effective, without being so destructive that Iran is forced to respond in a large scale way. If Iran does decide to launch a saturation attack on Israel in response, then all bets will be off and Iran can expect critical infrastructure to start exploding.

The ball is in their court now.
