"...If the ayatollahs in Tehran lose control of the country and general chaos reigns in Iran, I believe Baku will be forced to act under public pressure."
I didn't write this yesterday for rhetoric. Many, especially in the West, believe that Azerbaijan has an authoritarian government and that public opinion is irrelevant. In reality, this is largely propaganda by our critics, aimed at putting pressure on us. The reality is far from simple. You probably remember the incident that occurred in July 2020 on the border with Armenia (outside Karabakh), when Armenians suddenly attacked our military positions, killing our soldiers, officers, and one of our generals. After this battle, the next day, 200,000 outraged young people came to parliament and demanded that the authorities punish Armenia for this insolence. Aliyev went on television and declared that the government had received the people's message, and Armenia would receive a response from our army.
Two months later, the war began.
Iranian ayatollahs had supported Armenia and Armenian separatists for 30 years. Experts unanimously believed that if Azerbaijan succeeded in resolving the Karabakh issue, the next issue it would have to resolve would be that of Southern Azerbaijan.
War is raging in Iran, and it's unclear when and how it will end. Therefore, it's difficult to say anything definitive.
I'd like to point out that I've been interested in this topic for a long time, ever since the Shah's time.
Well, we'll just have to watch how things unfold.
