Turkish firm FNSS Defense Systems’ weapon carrier vehicles have proven effective on the battlefield as they have been used by the Turkish Armed Forces (TSK), leading to additional procurement orders from the company and paving the way for its products’ exports abroad.

A renewed contract has already been signed with the company at the 15th International Defense Industry Fair (IDEF 2021) for the supply of additional vehicles to the TSK. The vehicles were developed within the scope of the Weapon Carrier Vehicles (WCV) project carried out under the roof of the Presidency of Defense Industries (SSB).

The WCV project aimed to design, develop and produce tracked and wheeled vehicles equipped with an Anti-Tank Remote Controlled Turret (ARCT) and a 7.62 mm co-axial. The WCV contract was signed with FNSS in 2016, and per schedule, the design and development activities were completed in 2018.

The WCV project aims for the delivery of 260 amphibious tracked and wheeled vehicles, while the TSK has already received nearly 200 tracked Kaplan vehicles and wheeled Pars 4x4s within 20 months. The latest batch of Kaplan vehicles was the first one to use the OMTAS turrets developed by the country’s leading defense company Roketsan.

The project's first phase is scheduled to end in February 2022 and deliveries of additional vehicles are scheduled to begin in 2023.

FNSS General Manager Nail Kurt told Anadolu Agency (AA) that although the project seems to include two types of vehicles, it actually comprises four different products.

Stating that they have developed two gun turrets and two vehicles, Kurt noted that there are two types of turrets because they were designed to launch both the missiles that currently existed in the inventory and the OMTAS missiles.

Commenting on the project in general, Kurt said that the first three years of the project were for the design, prototyping and qualification tests and that a total of 45,000 kilometers (27,961 miles) were covered during the qualification tests.

Emphasizing that there are important domestic gains in the project, Kurt noted that several components such as gun turrets, fire control systems, ceramic armors, the powertrain, suspension system and complex gearboxes were all designed and produced locally.

"Beyond all that has been done, the important thing is that these systems are being put immediately into use,” he said, which brings user satisfaction. These vehicles, he said, are directly sent to the field from the factory and that they don’t have “the luxury” to make mistakes.

The FNSS has teams that are ready 24/7 to solve any problems that may arise in terms of after-sales support, Kurt added.

Emphasizing that in the defense industry "you cannot sell products outside without selling products inside," Kurt stated that as FNSS, they have reached an export volume of more than $1 billion (TL 8.49 billion) in Malaysia and Oman with Pars 8x8 and Pars 6x6 vehicles, without starting any projects in Turkey.

“Of course, the use of the product by an army with a very high reputation, such as the TSK, has a great marketing effect,” he said, noting that there was a particular demand for Pars 4x4 vehicles during the fair.

Members are not blamed. Maybe hundreds of photos and information are shared on the forum every day. We share this information on our social media accounts so that more people can access it.

When we find out who the source of the photos is, we also tag them. We are not a commercial enterprise. We do not make money here, on the contrary, we pay for fast and powerful servers. We serve as volunteers. I'll be a dad in 4 months and I am trying to promote the development and products of my country on DefenceHub. Please do not ignore this.

I bet the army have tested these vehicles for their merits. We are worried way too much on logistic and technical support for vehicles from different manufacturers. Any half-decent mechanic can work wonders on all three, given that the spare parts supplies are secured.

You could be right perhaps I am reaching beyond my area of expertise.

Still though. Why so many different suppliers, because Basic Economics tell me bigger serial Production equals cheaper price.

They will exhibit all their skills in the field and demand accordingly

After the field tests, it will be determined from which company or companies the 3 thousand vehicles needed will be purchased. We ask what it means to make these choices, which were made on paper in the past, this time on the field:

“We are talking about a method that will definitely be very efficient in areas where we have more than one ambitious manufacturer, such as land vehicles. Both the reliability of the tenders will increase, as the offers will not remain on paper, and the results will be seen in advance.

This was first explained at the Land Vehicles Seminar in 2018. An official from one of our producers who spoke at the seminar said, “We are satisfied with the competition procedure. This is how we get all our tenders abroad.' He showed his satisfaction and stated that they were confident in themselves.

Normally, because the tenders were on paper and many products were developed specifically for the tenders, the outputs could not meet the requirements completely. In other words, the firm sets high targets when making the offer, and some issues may not be at the desired level after the contract is signed. The competition method will be a major factor in minimizing this risk.”

The best will win The positions of

BMC, FNSS and Otokar in the fairground are very close to each other. With Fatih Mehmet Küçük, we are walking towards a place where we can see them all from a wide angle. Meanwhile, he continues to convey some details about the competition.

For example, we learn that the vehicle turrets in the ZMA configuration will be the 35 mm KORHAN turret developed by ASELSAN . Therefore, companies will only compete with their platforms. Many factors such as the strength of these vehicles, which are similar to each other in terms of weight and dimensions, maintenance and repair costs, and user convenience, will be examined.

We see candidates with 8x8 wheels at the fair… BMC's Altuğ, FNSS's PARS and Otokar's Arma are before us. Küçük says that all three models are equipped with highly advanced systems and are not inferior to their competitors in the world. Underlining that one of the most important points here is the cost, he said, “There are also heavier vehicles with different features in the world. However, they are produced in extremely limited numbers due to their astronomical cost. The important thing is to achieve the balance of cost and effect with optimum designs. Our companies do this very well,” he says.

One User says Tests will Start next Month According to Representatives at OTOKAR (IDEF21).

It would be nice that if someone would ask in idef whether they would go for local sources for subsystem or not.

Dear forumers:

From this point on, any more political content, ad hominem personal attacks will be warned officially with points taken and probable bans.

I've tried to be as understanding as possible by asking nicely. It seems that some of you don't get the message through that way.

If any of you break the forum rules again, they will have to deal with the consequences. No objections.

If your current age isn't receiving this, wait a couple of years then come back and post here again. Leave the childish behaviour for somewhere else.

Please!

I think they are trying to fund each company for more development and create fair competition, just like a small prize for each.. Personally I think all those local military trucks (derman, bmc.. ) look like slightly modified civilian trucks except, may be seyit, which is actually tatra chassis. None of them looks like real off-road military trucks such as Oshkosh, MAN, Volat, etc. Derman looks like a mercedes truck with armored cabin to be honest, what I really want to see is like FNSS turning Pars something to 10x10 missile carrier truck, or volat like BMC trucks with real off road chassis
