Malaysia's air force scrambled jets to intercept 16 Chinese military aircraft off the country's coast in the South China Sea, a rare incident officials said Tuesday threatened "national sovereignty". The incident took place Monday off the Malaysian part of Borneo island over the fiercely contested waters, where China and Malaysia have overlapping territorial claims.

The Chinese air force transport planes approached Malaysian airspace in "tactical formation" and flew to within about 60 nautical miles of the coast, Malaysia's air force said in a statement. They were spotted by radar and several attempts were made to contact the planes. As they approached, the air force sent planes to intercept and identify them, and they did not enter the country's airspace before flying off. The Malaysian air force described the appearance of the planes as "suspicious". "This incident is a serious matter in regards to national sovereignty and aviation safety," as the area is a busy place for aircraft, the statement said.

The foreign ministry did not respond to requests for comment. China has laid claim to nearly all of the South China Sea and has built numerous military outposts on small islands and atolls, angering other countries with competing claims to the waters. Despite their overlapping claims, relations between Malaysia and China are usually cordial, and Monday's incident was unusual. There have been tensions in the area in the past, however.

Last year, a Chinese survey ship had a long standoff with a Malaysian oil exploration vessel off Borneo. Other claimants in the sea include Vietnam, the Philippines, Brunei and Taiwan. The US has also sent warships through the waters to assert international rights to freedom of navigation, angering China.

The Royal Malaysian Air Force deemed the mission over the South China Sea a “threat to national sovereignty and aviation safety.”

BY THOMAS NEWDICK JUNE 1, 2021

he Royal Malaysian Air Force has reported a “suspicious flight” into international airspace off the coast of eastern Malaysia by no fewer than 16 Chinese military aircraft. The aircraft, which reportedly mainly consisted of People’s Liberation Army Air Force long-range transports, were intercepted by Malaysian Hawk Mk 208 light combat aircraft.

While this is not the first such incident, it appears to be by far the biggest in recent years. According to a statement from General Dato’ Sri Ackbal Bin Hj Abdul Samad, the commander of the Royal Malaysian Air Force, or RMAF, the Chinese aircraft were detected as they entered part of the Malaysian exclusive economic zone covered by the Kota Kinabalu Flight Information Region (FIR), one of the two in the country, and as they were approaching Malaysian national airspace.

The statement from the RMAF says the service was alerted to the PLAAF aircraft by radar from the service’s Air Defense Center in Sarawak at 11:53 am local time. The Chinese aircraft were reportedly flying in a long trail formation, each separated by around 60 nautical miles. They changed direction once over the Luconia Shoals, a reef complex in the contested South China Sea, and then headed back toward the Chinese mainland.

Information provided by the RMAF indicates the PLAAF aircraft were flying at an altitude of between 23,000 and 27,000 feet and a speed of 290 knots as they passed from the Singapore FIR into the Malaysian exclusive economic zone, before approaching to within 60 nautical miles of Sarawak province, on Malaysia’s eastern coast. There is no evidence that they violated Malaysian airspace.

The RMAF says it made “several attempts” to call upon the PLAAF aircraft to contact Kota Kinabalu Flight air traffic controllers, but no response came and when they entered the FIR it scrambled Hawk Mk 208s at 13:33 pm local time. The RMAF jets were standing on alert at Labuan Air Base in northeast Malaysia, the closest fighter base to the incident. The Hawks intercepted and performed a visual identification of the aircraft, which comprised Ilyushin Il-76 and Xian Y-20 transports, although some sources claim that other, so far unidentified types, were part of the formation.

“This incident is a serious matter against the threat of national sovereignty and aviation safety based on the density of air traffic in the airline route in the Kota Kinabalu Flight FIR,” a statement from the RMAF read. “The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has taken note of this matter through the Ministry of Defense.”
The Chinese embassy in Kuala Lumpur countered by saying the aircraft were conducted routine flight training and “strictly abided by” international law, without violating any other countries’ airspace.

“China and Malaysia are friendly neighbours, and China is willing to continue bilateral friendly consultations with Malaysia to jointly maintain regional peace and stability,” Reuters reported a Chinese embassy spokesperson saying.

The waters off the east coast of Malaysia are already hotly contested, with China, Malaysia and Vietnam all having claims on the extended continental shelf that contains oil and gas reserves.

In the past, this friction have led to maritime standoffs involving vessels from all three nations, among them ships from the China Coast Guard which have reportedly harassed Malaysian oil and gas work. This is carried out by the country’s state-owned Petronas company, within the Malaysian exclusive economic zone but also within areas jointly claimed by the other two countries.

In particular, the aforementioned Luconia Shoals have been the focus of tensions and China reportedly has vessels monitoring this area almost permanently. Another area rich in natural resources, the shoals fall within Malaysia’s exclusive economic zone but also claimed by China and Taiwan. The area is routinely patrolled by the Malaysian Coast Guard, RMAF, and Royal Malaysian Navy.

Five RMAF Hawk Mk 208s, of the type involved in the interception, led in formation by a two-seater.
The tensions in the South China Sea region have also involved the United States, leading to encounters between American and Chinese naval forces, including a near-collision between warships from the two countries in 2018. China’s expansive claims over virtually the entire body of water are rejected by every other country in the region, and most of the international community, too.
As to the precise purpose of the latest aerial maneuvers by the PLAAF, the mission seems to bear the hallmarks of a readiness exercise by the service’s strategic transport fleet and there seem to be parallels with the kinds of mock assaults that are flown by U.S. Air Force airlifters, too. This branch of the air force has seen significant expansion in recent years as Beijing seeks to reinforce its extra-territorial ambitions after many years of neglect.

Previously, the PLAAF had only a limited ability to transport large military loads rapidly over considerable distances, but its logistical reach in the air has been expanded by first acquiring Il-76s from Russian production and then developing its own strategic airlifter, the Y-20, which you can read more about here.

RMAF
A closer view of one of the Il-76s intercepted off the Malaysian coast.
Late last year, the first firm evidence emerged that the Y-20 was also now flying with indigenous WS-20 turbofan engines, not only offering more power than the previous Russian-made engines but also eliminating dependency on foreign suppliers.
Regardless of the specifics of this PLAAF mission, it points to Beijing’s continuous policy of demonstrating its military force in the South China Sea and in particular its willingness to now involve strategic transport aircraft in these potentially provocative activities.

Malaysia should choose and awarded their LIFT fighters contenders ASAP, sending Hawk 108s to intercept those large numbers of aircraft is pretty awful.

It's pretty obvious that China is testing the preparedness of the nations in the area as US carrier has to go help with the extraction from Afghanistan. So China is flexing its muscles to make the nations in the area aware of how helpless they are without the US.

I believe it's going to be counterproductive. But the countries need investments and US can't provide all that.

US should force US companies to relocate to other nations before it's too late. (though it might be too late already).

It's weird that Malaysia is buying LMS from China while having sea dispute. I think this recent incident will affect China's participation in MN's MRSS program.

Not only the MRSS's, Malaysia will probably goes for the FA-50 gor it's LIFT jets, instead of JF-17s, anyway the Keris class LMS are (if I'm not mistaken) procured during the Najib administration. Not the current ones.

I hope this is a wake up call for Malaysia (and the Philippines) to beef up it's defense, Malaysia had been very lacking in it's procurement lately and if there's any, its trouble plagued (the Gowind Frigate debacle for example).

It's just a matter of time for Indonesia, China is currently testing the preparedness of countries ranging from Taiwan, Japan,PH,Malaysia.... basically countries in the first island chains.

It’s quite important to settle civilians onto any island that’s in a forward position, and have them develop those places for living or something else.

That and some kind of patrolboat in the area is necessary.

Time to set-up a joint force, not something like NATO to great extends, not like QUAD which is based on political reasons but pure self-defense reasons to show teeth against the China upon such incursions.
I don't see any reason why Malaysia-Indonesia-Philippines-Singapore to not set a joint rapid response force.

Minor bickering always happen between neighbors in east Asia, Korea and Japan are supposed to be allies but they also quarrel all the time, Malaysia-Indonesia-Philippines-Singapore all maintain very close relations with China, not even one bullet ever is fired by China to those countries. You have zero idea about the real situation there.

"Minor bickering", I really doubt this. Dispatching such a flotilla and purposefully violating airspace are part of a show against countries which the flight is conducted very close to more looks like a major incident.

Korea and Japan has some historical issues, yet still on-going political issues but they have the magic hand of US, they can closely operate in any case of violence origination from China even they don't need a magic hand, officials of those countries can use their rational minds and see best to join forces together to counter the violence, they know if one fails then the rest does too.

No need to fire bullets in 21st, the wars are made by showing off and threatening adversaries by pulling tricks and showing skills, there is an obvious pressure on those countries from China and it can not be hidden by telling a bullet was fired.
For example you can see WWII, no bullets were fired by Germany up to a point, which then thousands of missiles and blitzkriegs have rained upon.

It is for those countries' best to form a joint force, not only against China but for anything may happen in future.

China has very good relations with those 4 countries, we are never close to battles or wars. actually those countries are arguably more closer to China than to the west.
There is no comparison between WW2 and SCS, SCS is many claimants lodging claims against each other, which Vietnam occupies the most islands and China occupies the least.

It has past the SCS issue already, China had already became a threat to those countries and perceived as such by the public.
For the comparison, situation before WWII was not comparable to the WWI, only until it broke out. Most of the major wars are positioned around sharing natural resources.
Very good "economical" relations does not really equal to "good relations" in all aspects.
From your point of view, nobody in the world has reasons to arm their armies, why China is beefing the army up while US-China has good economical relationship thus presumably can also have a good relationship.
Have US fired a bullet yet that China has a reason to beef up the army? Or China on the background is feeling threatened by US, like those 4 countries are feeling to be threatened by China, so strengthening the armed forces?

'Old' Quad strategy risks provoking China: Malaysia's Mahathir

May 20, 2021 20:51 JST

He said the Quad members -- the U.S., Japan, Australia and India -- would be better off engaging with Beijing individually rather than joining hands to attempt to control China's rising influence in the Indo-Pacific region and the South China Sea.

"Chinese claim that the South China Sea belongs to them, but ships are passing through without being hampered or examined by them," he said. "If China suddenly decides to stop ships passing through, there will be a crisis."

This is your personal perspective formed through western media, the truth is far from that. China maintains very good relations with all of them, we are nowhere close to any military conflicts.

Nobody has right to examine ships within the EEZ, EEZ is about sharing natural resources not about examination. Chinese fisheries are known to exploit natural resources without respecting anybody else in the region and drying it up.

Apparently this guy have no information or an actual strategical knoweldge to do the critical thinking about the issue. He appearantly accepts the Chinese dominance in the seas that belongs to them.

So China shouldn't be provoked despite of their provocations and these countries should be silent against all those even if an entire flotilla passes over their homeland and they supposed just sit and watch because it might be some " minor incident"?
Anyway did China posted an official apology for the incident happened yesterday? If it was not intentional or an accident happened during an exercise there should be an official apology right?
Obviously the incident was intentional and was a message.
Those 4 countries are sovereign countries and they have all means of rights to set up anything to defend themselves against anyone, primarily China because it is the only country which constantly disturbs and harasses.
