In what scenarios will be the IHA-300 used? A 500km range missile on a drone sounds absolutely great.
More consequentially one needs to ask where we can use Akinci in an aerial warfare scenario when we meet a like peer adversary.
If our airforce has not established an overall air superiority, then to push these drones in to battlefield would be like sending sheep to slaughter house.
Akinci is a sluggish, slow and big bird that has a large RCS. Its vulnerability was further emphasised in Mali when Algerian AD systems shot one down with ease. Also they are no match against fighter aircrafts.
The best way to utilise Akinci would be to take out enemy assets on the ground in deep enemy territory with stand-off munitions like IHA-300. Be it strategic command posts or AD systems. They could be used to destroy missile sites, armoured columns, ground airforce assets deep in enemy territory whilst not leaving our borders.
One more use that comes to mind that can be a possibility is:
Turkish MOD has introduced an a2a missile made from a trg122 with over 50km range.
Akıncı can fire these with a range of 500km as modified for air to air mode, to hit enemy aircrafts. Missiles’s guidance by third party radars become a key issue here. But a linked system can be used to manage that. (Who needs PL15s to knock down Rafale jets?)
