BrahMos Says Got Permission From Russia, India to Export Missiles to Third Countries

BrahMos Aerospace, a joint Russian-Indian developer of the BRAHMOS supersonic cruise missiles, said on Monday it got greenlighted by the governments of Russia and India to export the missile to third countries.

"A lot of countries have shown great interest in [purchasing the missiles of] BrahMos. We are now working with our Russian colleagues.

We have already received [export] permits from Russia and the Indian government, and we really hope that as soon as the pandemic is over, we will be able to act on it," BrahMos Chief General Manager Praveen Pathak said on the sidelines of the Russian-hosted Army 2020 forum.

BrahMos Aerospace was established in 1998 as a joint venture of Russian rocket and missile developer NPO Mashinostroyeniya and India's Defence Research and Development Organisation.

Tests of several modifications of the Russian-Indian BrahMos cruise missiles with extended range are planned for 2020, Tactical Missiles Corporation (TMC) JSC CEO Boris Obnosov told TASS Monday.

"Tests of BrahMos modifications with increased range planned for this year," he said at the Army-2020 international military forum.

Earlier this summer, BrahMos’s air-based modification (BrahMos-A) was successfully certified in India, Obnosov noted.


"Quite recently, on June 10, the air-based supersonic cruise missile obtained its first permission for use, provided by India’s CEMILAC certification agency. All specifications for the Indian Air Force have been confirmed. The BrahMos has become the first Indian aviation missile to obtain this permission," the TMC CEO said.

According to Obnosov, the BrahMos-A air-based cruise missile will significantly increase capabilities of the Indian Air Force.

"The BrahMos’s launch range to the target is 300 km, while Su-30MKI jet fighter’s range with air refueling is over 3,000 km - together, this provided [Indian] Air Force with a huge advantage in their actions in the Indian Ocean zone," Obnosov noted.

The CEO highly praised the work of the Russian-Indian BrahMos Aerospace joint venture. "This rapidly developing joint venture is one of the best examples of military-technical cooperation," he underscored.

Alright then here is an upcoming cruise missile :

Liquid Fuel Ramjet Technology project stated a decade back to develop the engine tech in house to be used in a variety of applications in the future. Targeted range, speed etc are given below:

After many years of silence on the project in 2018 it was announced that a test bed has been set up for engine testing. A prototype of the LFRJ engine has been made and is being tested there. From DRDO 2018 Annual report :

In late 2020 the schematic of the upcoming missile has become public. All dimensions are in mm :

As previously stated, the engine will be used in many applications and its likely that these different applications will require some airframe modifications in each case. We don't know what type of missile the schematic above is for. But we can guess. I think the missile shown here is a Supersonic TARget (STAR) or a LACM/AShM, meant to be launched from a ground or naval platform. It just needs a solid rocket booster at the end to get the missile to supersonic speeds.

I say that because of that single guide rail running right through the lower end of the missile, 20mm in width. That is probably to assist with the smooth and safe ejection from the cannister/VLS. This is especially necessary if the cannister is larger than the missile and there is a lot of gap between the missile body and cannister walls.

The sea skimming missile is being developed for use from Sea King helicopters. It's an air launched anti ship missile to enable carriage by Indian Navy's shipborne Sea King helicopters to replace the currently in use Sea Eagle missiles(pic below). The SR in the name suggests there will be a MR and LR version in the future.

A DRDO-developed Laser Guided Anti Tank Guided Missile (ATGM) also known as Canon-Launched Guided Missile (CLGM) was successfully test fired from MBT Arjun Tank at KK Ranges, Armoured Corps Centre and School (ACC&S) Ahmednagar on 22nd Sep 2020. In these tests, the ATGM successfully defeated a target located at 3 km.

Laser guided ATGMs lock and track the targets with the help of laser designation to ensure precision hit accuracy. The missile employs a tandem HEAT warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA) protected armoured vehicles. It has been developed with multiple-platform launch capability and is currently undergoing technical evaluation trials from gun of MBT Arjun.

Armament Research & Development Establishment (ARDE) Pune in association with High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL) Pune, and Instruments Research & Development Establishment (IRDE) Dehradun have developed the missile.

The ATGM was primarily meant for the Arjun Tank but there was an infanty version of it too. The launcher was borrowed from the Russian Kornet ATGM's launcher :

In the recent years an new version has come forth. This is a smaller version, probably lighter too. The IR seeker has been removed by a W-band seeker. May be its meant to be fired from drones. We don't know yet.

Agni V is a 50 ton missile with ~8, 000 km range. The new one, probably named Agni VI will be 70 tons with range around 12, 000 km. Like the Agni V, the new missile will also be fired from a cannister. The cannister design has been out for a year :

Look at the size: 20 m in length and 3.2 m in diameter. The Agni V, for comparison, is 17.5 m in length and 2 m in diameter. The new ICBM is longer & fatter than Agni V. The larger diameter will allow packing in MIRVs & decoys. We might even see some Hypersonic Glide Vehicles in the future, work is ongoing there.

2 years back this photo of a tractor of Transporter Erector Launcher(TEL) came up. It was under going trials in an Army artillery range at that time. The wheel arrangement is pretty unique and unlike anything I've seen before. My personal take is that this was made in a DRDO-Indian auto-industry collaboration. You can see the DRDO logo on the cabin door. Then it suddenly disappeared, don't know what happened to it after that. Maybe this truck was meant to carry the new ICBM, or maybe its just a prototype. It looks a little too small to carry that missile.

It makes sense in a way. The truck is ready, the cannister is ready, the missile is ready for flight tests I suppose. The only thing missing is the erector and launcher.

Agni 5 has a rail version too. Agni 6 might not fit on a rail if the new missile dimensions are correct. Also, this tel is an upgraded version of tata 12x12 drdo bought for testing. We need something the size of RS 12m size for our future ICBMs. the Tata 12x12 will mostly be used for conventional BMs being developed to match china.

The SAAW is a 125kg precision guided bomb with 100 km striking range. The warhead is some 72kg in weight. The guidance is driven by NavIC/GAGAN and an RCI developed IIR seeker in the terminal phase.

The entire body is made out of composites to make it stealthier. Even the wings are made of composites :

I thought these were already in active service. Iaf wanted to use them during the balakot raid.

There were prototypes available that were meant for weapon testing. Production orders hadn't come in then.

India should not just advertise this just as Anti-Airfield weapon, this type of missiles can be even used for anti-ship roles. India needs to up their PR game in general, improve brand recognition at the international stage.
