Sevmash Shipyard in Severodvinsk floated the Krasnoyarsk Yasen-M-class SSGN of project 885M, TASS reports from the site.​

Head of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexey Rakhmanov said Sevmash was working to accelerate nuclear submarine production by 9-14 months. “The shipyard has to decrease the construction time of serial submarines by 9-14 months,” he said adding the USC was assisting the shipyard.

Sevmash plans to launch three submarines by the end of the year. It is loaded for ten years, shipyard Director Mikhail Budnichenko said.

“We have to commission three submarines this year. There is work for ten years to come.”

The Navy has to receive the Novosibirsk SSGN of project 885M, the Knyaz Oleg Borey-A-class SSBN of project 955A, and the Belgorod special-designation nuclear submarine of project 09852 by the end of the year.

The Krasnoyarsk is the second serial submarine of project 885M. It was laid on July 27, 2014. The Russian Navy operates the Severodvinsk K-560 Yasen-class SSGN of project 885. It was laid by Sevmash on December 21, 1993, floated on June 15, 2010, and commissioned on July 17, 2014. The Navy also received the Kazan K-561 SSGN of project 885M. It was laid on July 24, 2009 and floated on March 31, 2017.

The Severodvinsk and the Kazan operate in the Northern fleet. The Novosibirsk first serial SSGN of project 885M was laid on July 26, 2013 and floated on December 25, 2019. It will be the first SSGN of the class in the Pacific fleet.

Sevmash is building another six SSGN of project 885M — the Krasnoyarsk, the Arkhangelsk (laid on March 19, 2015), the Perm (laid on July 29, 2016), the Ulyanovsk (laid on July 28, 2017), the Voronezh and the Vladivostok (both laid on July 20, 2020). The series of eight SSGN of project 885M is to be completed in 2028 when the Vladivostok joins the Navy.

SEVASTOPOL, August 19. /TASS/. The Russian Black Sea Fleet’s frigate Admiral Essen will participate in the defense show of the latest military hardware in Turkey, the Black Sea Fleet’s press office reported on Thursday.


"The crew of the Black Sea Fleet’s frigate Admiral Essen accomplishing tasks as part of the Navy’s standing Mediterranean taskforce has made a transit to Istanbul to take part in the IDEF 2021 defense industry show of armaments and military hardware, in which some Russian companies are participating to demonstrate aircraft and specialized automotive and tracked hardware, air defense systems, artillery guns and advanced small arms," the press office said in a statement.


At the IDEF 2021 defense show, the crew of the frigate Admiral Essen will demonstrate an advanced warship of Russian shipbuilding and new weapon systems that it carries, the statement says.


After the defense show is over, the frigate’s crew will continue fulfilling assigned tasks in the Mediterranean Sea, the press office said.

The frigates like the Admiral Essen represent a new series of Project 11356R/M naval ships (the Project 11357 designation is also used). These frigates are designed to destroy enemy surface ships and vessels, submarines and ground installations, carry out patrols and defend sea lanes.


The frigates of this Project are armed with eight launchers of Kalibr-NK cruise missiles that are capable of striking surface, coastal and underwater targets at a distance of up to 2,600 km.


The warships of this Project are also armed with Shtil-1, Palash and AK-630M air defense missile and artillery systems, A-190 100mm versatile artillery guns, torpedo tubes and RBU-6000 rocket launchers. The frigates also have a take-off and landing strip and a hangar for an anti-submarine warfare helicopter (Ka-27 or Ka-31).

The IDEF’21 international defense industry show opened at the Tuyap Exhibition Center in Istanbul on August 17 and will work until August 20. The defense show will feature a broad range of products made by 1,236 defense contractors from 53 countries. Over 150 delegations from 79 countries are participating in the IDEF’21 defense show, its organizers said.

Russia's secretive special survey ship Yantar raises eyebrows when she appears off Western shores. She has previously been noted conducting operations off Syria, in the Persian Gulf and off Americas. And elsewhere. Now she is off the coast of Ireland, loitering in the vicinity of underwater internet cables.​

The Russian Navy related ship Yantar has turned up off the Atlantic coast of Ireland. An Irish Defence Forces spokesperson said that the Irish Navy is aware of the ship.

The ship carries a range of deep-diving submersibles and sonar systems and has been suspected of operating on undersea cables before.

Yantar took up a stationary position between two undersea internet cables on Tuesday morning. According to AIS (automated identification system) positions collected by MarineTraffic.com, the ship moved into a position between the cables around 4am local time. She has remained there for most of Wednesday before resuming her journey southwest.

In the hours before stopping, it had altered course to run parallel to the expected route of the Celtic Norse undersea cable. The other nearby cable is the AEConnect-1 which runs between Ireland and the United States. It is possible that there is additional underwater infrastructure in the vicinity.

According to analysis of open sources (OSINT), Yantar left the base of Olenya Guba in the Russian Arctic around August 8. Yantar does not appear to have been on AIS between leaving Olenya Guba and arriving off Ireland. Navy vessels are not bound by the same rules as civilian vessels and Yantar appears to routinely turns off her AIS. So her exact whereabouts have not yet been determined. However Russian Navy ships have been noted off the West Coast of Ireland and also off Scotland during this time.

Olenya Guba is where a number of special assets are based. These include the Russian Navy’s famous Losharik spy submarine which suffered a fatal fire on July 1, 2019. Other unusual marine systems include a pen for trained Beluga Whales. This was possibly related to the whale which turned up off the Norwegian coast in April 2019.

Yantar is described variously as a ‘Special Purpose Ship’ and an ‘Oceanographic vessel’. These are however seen as euphemisms for a spy ship. She is operated by Russia’s secretive Main Directorate of Underwater Research (GUGI) who also operate Russia’s ‘special mission’ (read ‘spy’) submarines.

Yantar is equipped with the pr.16810 “Rus” (AS-37 Russia) crewed submersible which can dive to over 6,000 meters (20,000 feet). This is much deeper than the 100 meter (300 foot) deep waters where she is currently hovering. The submersible is carried in a large hangar and is launched over the starboard (righthand) side. At her stern there are two a-frames for launching smaller submersibles and remote operated vehicles (ROVs). Crewed systems may include the ARS-600 which is the Russian version of the Canadian designed Deep Worker submersible.

The submersibles and ROVs can be used for operating on seabed infrastructure such as internet cables. Additionally Yantar can use her shipboard and towed sonar systems to map the sea floor.

Other ships have recently been suspected of surveying near undersea cables. On August 15 The Times reported that an investigation is under way relating to unauthorized undersea works. A civilian vessel was suspected of surveying a cable on behalf of Russia. Even if Yantar’s current mission is not directly related, it is part of the bigger picture.

Based on previous operating patterns Yantar is likely to deploy for several months and conduct multiple surveys, often near internet cables.

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Monday launched the construction of new nuclear submarines and other warships, part of a sweeping military modernization effort amid tensions with the West.

Speaking in a video call, Putin gave orders for two nuclear submarines armed with intercontinental ballistic missiles along with two diesel-powered submarines and two corvettes at shipyards in Severodvinsk, St. Petersburg and Komsomolsk-on-Amur.


“We will continue to boost the potential of the Russian navy, develop its bases and infrastructure, arm it with state-of-the-art weapons,” Putin said. “A strong and sovereign Russia needs a powerful and well-balanced navy.”

The Kremlin has made military modernization a top priority as relations with the West have plunged to post-Cold War lows after Russia’s 2014 annexation of Ukraine’s Crimea. Moscow has sought to reestablish a regular naval presence in parts of the world that the Soviet Union had during the Cold War.

The Russian navy already has a major presence in the Mediterranean Sea, with a naval base in the Syrian port of Tartus. It has expanded and modified the Tartus base, the only such facility that Russia currently has outside the former Soviet Union.

“We will continue to show the Russian flag in strategically important ocean areas,” Putin said.

Monday's ceremony for the new ships was part of the Army-2021 show intended to showcase military might and attract foreign customers for Russia's arms industries. The weeklong show features aircraft, tanks, missiles and other weapons.

“Many of our weapons have the capabilities that have no analogues in the world, and some will remain unrivaled for a long time to come,” Putin said.

As reported by Military Leak, the Russian army tested for the first time a new tactic of using in tandem the ISDM remote minelaying engineering system and mobile groups of heavy flamethrowers TOS-1A in the main phase of the joint strategic exercise Zapad-2021 at the Mulino proving ground in the Nizhny Novgorod Region.

Two mobile groups of ten heavy flamethrowers TOS-1A Solntsepyok were employed to inflict losses on the advancing forces of a hypothetical enemy. A combination of explosions of uncontrolled unguided missiles with thermobaric warheads and a minefield planted by the ISDM remote-controlled minelaying engineering system Zemledeliye created a high-temperature fire-field and a zone of high pressure in the way of advancing enemy forces.

The ISDM is a remote-mining engineering system that was unveiled in June 2020 during the Victory Parade. The vehicle is based on a KamAZ 6560 8x8 military truck chassis with a mine launching system mounted at the rear. The system has been developed by Ganichev NPO Splav.

The ISDM fires solid-fuel rockets carrying various types of land mines. The system marks areas with mines on an electronic map and transmits data to higher levels of the command chain. Remote mine-laying has a number of advantages as it features an increased speed of mine laying in complex environments.

According to well-known data, the ISDM combat vehicle is fitted 50-barrel multiple launch rocket system consisting of two blocks with five rows of tube launchers. Each tube can fire one 122-mm rocket equipped with mines of various types. All the firing operations are controlled from inside of the crew cabin using a computerized automatic launching system. The system is supposed to be a mine dispenser working like air-dropped cluster bombs.

The reloading system includes a transport-loading unit, also based on an 8x8 KamAZ chassis.

SIMFEROPOL, September 21. /TASS/. The Kerch Shipyard in Crimea has floated out the Project 22800 latest missile corvette Askold built on order from Russia’s Defense Ministry, the Crimean State Council’s press office reported on Tuesday.

"The launch ceremony was held under the direction of Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov who also inspected the course of surface shipbuilding at the Shipyard and its production capacities," the statement sways.

The Askold will be the second Project 22800 corvette built at the Kerch Shipyard, according to the data of Russia’s Defense Ministry.

"The first warship, the Tsiklon, was put afloat at the end of last year’s summer and is currently undergoing a series of trials in Novorossiysk while the third corvette Amur is at the stage of its construction in the Shipyard’s slipway, with the work on its hull completed and the assembly of its equipment underway," the ministry said.


The press office of Russia’s Black Sea Fleet reported in August that the Tsiklon would enter service with the Fleet by the yearend.

Currently, the Russian Navy operates three Project 22800 corvettes: the Mytishchi, the Sovetsk and the Odintsovo. All of them are operating in the Russian Baltic Fleet. Overall, shipbuilders will construct 18 such warships, which will be divided equally between the Pacific, Baltic and Black Sea Fleets.

Project 22800 corvettes​

Project 22800 Karakurt-class missile corvettes are a series of Russian green-water multipurpose missile/artillery warships. The corvettes of this class developed by specialists of the St. Petersburg-based Almaz Central Design Bureau for Marine Engineering (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) are characterized by high sea worthiness and handling characteristics. They are based on the most advanced domestic technologies that allow their effective operation within fleet taskforces both in the northern and southern latitudes.

Karakurt-class corvettes displace about 800 tonnes, develop a speed of over 30 knots and their sea endurance is 15 days. They are armed with Kalibr-NK cruise missiles and upgraded AK-176MA 76.2mm artillery guns.

The Project 22800 Karakurt-class missile corvette was designed by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau in St. Petersburg. The ship is intended to engage the enemy’s strategic facilities in green waters, destroy hostile surface combatants and offshore installations individually and in conjunction with other forces, and repel air attacks. It can also eliminate frogmen, conduct search-and-rescue operations, and support coast guard units.

The Project 22800 corvette has a length of about 67 meters, a width of 11 meters, a draft of 2.8 meters and a full displacement of 860 tons. The ship is powered by two M-507D-1 diesel engines with a power output of 7,360 kWt each and an 8,830 kWt M70FRU gas-turbine engine. The corvette features a top speed of up to 35 knots, an economical speed of 12 knots, a cruising range of 2,500 nautical miles, and an endurance of 12 days. The ship launches missiles at Level 5 sea state.

The corvette’s armament comprises an AK-176MA 76mm gun and a Pantsir-M (NATO reporting name: SA-22 Greyhound) antiaircraft missile/gun system, while the first two ships of the type carry two AK-630 30mm small-caliber antiaircraft guns.

The ship is equipped with an eight-cell 3S-14 vertical launcher for Kalibr (SS-N-27 Sizzler) cruise missiles, which is located in its superstructure. The Project 22800 corvette features increased seaworthiness, high maneuverability, and low radar signature of its superstructure and hull. The ship can carry an Orlan-10 unmanned aerial vehicle.

MOSCOW, September 29. /TASS/. The cutting-edge, remotely controlled Narval combat module developed by Electromashina NPO (a subsidiary of UralVagonZavod group company of the ROSTEC State Corporation) has been successfully tested, general director of the company Igor Afanasyev reported on Wednesday.

"The Narval module has been successfully tested and demonstrated everything that was needed. I have to say that the module has competition from other manufacturers, we are not alone in this segment currently. Our product beats the competition — it fires better, costs less, and most importantly, it is easier to manage," he said.

According to him, the Narval is planned to be installed on light boats currently being designed to protect the Russian coast.

Initially, Narval was designed for the Russian Navy, but the unit also has export potential. Afanasyev pointed out that several countries have already expressed interest in it. "A number of countries are expressing their interest, and this is already tangible and serious. A number of countries are interested in the production of these modules on their territory under license," he added.

The shipborne stabilized remotely-operated Narval module is equipped with a 12.7 mm Kord machine gun. It has a daylight sighting camera, automatic target tracking, a thermal imaging system and a laser range finder. Optionally, there is a protection system against high-precision weapons, an all-round observation system and radar. The combat module is designed for installation on boats, medium and large ships. The Narval module was first presented at the Army 2020 International Military-Technical forum.

MOSCOW, October 4. /TASS/. The nuclear-powered submarine The Severodvinsk has carried out a second successful launch of a hypersonic missile Tsirkon from the White Sea at a target in the Barents Sea, the Defense Ministry told the media on Monday.

"A second test launch of a hypersonic cruise missile Tsirkon was carried out by the crew of the nuclear-powered submarine The Severodvinsk for the first time beneath the sea surface from a depth of 40 meters in the White Sea at a target in the Barents Sea. According to the objective monitoring means, the missile's flight from the moment of surfacing and to hitting the target totally matched the expected parameters," the Defense Ministry said.

On Monday morning, the ministry said that The Severodvinsk had successfully fired a Tsirkon hypersonic missile from a surface position. Before that, the missile was tested from a surface naval vessel - the lead ship of project 22350 The Admiral Gorshkov.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said that the Tsirkon hypersonic missile, capable of developing a speed of Mach 9 and hit targets more than 1,000 kilometers away, would enter duty soon.

On August 24, at the international military-technical forum Army-2021 the Defense Ministry concluded a contract for acquiring the Tsirkon missiles. The CEO and chief designer of the NPO Mashinostroyeniya, Alexander Leonov said the contract would be fulfilled by 2025.

The strategic nuclear-powered submarine Generalissimus Suvorov was laid down at the Sevmash Shipyard in Russia’s northwest on December 26, 2014

MOSCOW, October 14. /TASS/. The Project 955A (Borei-A-class) second serial-built strategic nuclear-powered missile-carrying submarine Generalissimus Suvorov currently under construction at the Sevmash Shipyard (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) will be delivered to the Russian Navy in December 2022, a source in the shipbuilding industry told TASS on Thursday.


"The strategic underwater cruiser Generalissimus Suvorov will enter the combat inventory of the Russian Navy in December 2022 while in December this year the missile carrier will be floated out. After that, it will enter trials, in which it will test-launch a Bulava intercontinental ballistic missile," the source said.


The Sevmash Shipyard declined to comment to TASS on this information.


United Shipbuilding Corporation Deputy CEO for Military Shipbuilding Vladimir Korolyov told TASS in September that the cutting-edge sub Generalissimus Suvorov would enter trials in 2022 and currently the underwater cruiser was being prepared to be put afloat.

The strategic nuclear-powered submarine Generalissimus Suvorov was laid down at the Sevmash Shipyard in Russia’s northwest on December 26, 2014. The sub belongs to the fourth generation of nuclear-powered submarines developed for the Russian Navy. Currently, four Project 955 and improved Project 955A submarines are operational in the Russian Navy. The fifth sub of this Project, the Knyaz Oleg, will be delivered to the Navy in December 2021.


Borei-and Borei-A-class submarines have been developed by the Rubin Central Design Bureau of Marine Engineering. They carry 16 Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles and are outfitted with 533mm torpedo tubes.


Compared to the baseline Borei series, Borei-A subs feature better acoustic stealth, maneuvering and deep-sea running capabilities and an improved armament control system.

Russian Navy Project 23900 LHD To Become Black Sea Fleet’s Flagship​

The advanced Project 23900 versatile amphibious assault ship (LHD) Mitrofan Moskalenko will become the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet, a source in the defense industry told TASS.​

The source said at the SIMBF international maritime business forum in Sevastopol:
“Infrastructural facilities are being prepared in Sevastopol for the helicopter carrier Mitrofan Moskalenko under construction at the Zaliv Shipyard. The process is on schedule. Work is underway in the waters of the Sevastopol Bay where its berth will be located. Everything should be ready by the time the ship arrives at the base,”

According to the source, when the ship arrives in Sevastopol, it will become the flagship of the Black Sea Fleet. The source said that the ship would occupy the place, which had been intended for the second Mistral-class ship designated as Sevastopol.

TASS does not have any official confirmation of the information provided by the source.

The versatile amphibious assault ship can carry a group of heavy helicopters, armored vehicles and transport up to 1,000 Marines or even more. It has a dock for landing boats.

The Project 23900 ship was developed by the Zelenodolsk Design Bureau. The first two ships of the type, namely, the Ivan Rogov and the Mitrofan Moskalenko, were laid down by the Zaliv Shipyard on July 20, 2020.

Zaliv Shipyard in Kerch laid the Ivan Rogov (factory # 01901) and the Mitrofan Moskalenko (01902) universal amphibious assault ships designed by Zelenodolsk Bureau of AK BARS Corporation.
The displacement is over 20000 tons. The ship is 204 meters long and the draft is over 7 meters. It can carry a thousand marines and 75 hardware units, and up to 16 helicopters. The dock of the ship can keep six landing boats.
Sources told TASS in November 2019 that the new amphibious assault ship can carry over 20 helicopters and two reinforced marine battalions of 900 men. They said the displacement will be 25000 tons and the length close to 220 meters.
The Russian amphibious assault ships resemble French Mistral. They have a through flight deck for helicopters and an island superstructure in the starboard. It carries two masts for radars and two funnels.
Mistral uses rudder-propeller units. The Russian ships have a traditional rudder-propeller group, according to the poster displayed in January 2020 at a show in Sevastopol.
Images published by Business Online show Ka-27 and Ka-52K helicopters on the deck of project 23900 ships. It is highly likely that the ships will be armed with Pantsir-M air defense guns and rotating Paket-NK SM-588 launchers with 324mm antitorpedoes.
Sources told TASS in April 2020 the two universal amphibious assault ships of project 23900 will cost close to 100 bln rubles. The lead ship is to be handed over to the Navy in 2026 and the second one on 2027.

Next year, the serial construction of Project 12700 mine countermeasures ships will be continued at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard for the Russian Navy’s minesweeping forces

MOSCOW, November 26. /TASS/. The Project 12700 (Alexandrite-class) mine countermeasures ship Anatoly Shlemov currently under construction at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard in Russia’s northwest will enter service with the Pacific Fleet next year, Russian Navy Commander-in-Chief Admiral Nikolai Yevmenov said on Friday.


"The next Project 12700 serial-produced mine countermeasures ship Anatoly Shlemov will enter service with the Pacific Fleet’s minesweeping forces in 2022 after planned outfitting work and all the stages of trials," the Russian Defense Ministry quoted the Navy chief as saying in a statement.


The minesweeper will be floated out at 12:00 p.m. on November 26, the admiral specified.


Next year, the serial construction of Project 12700 mine countermeasures ships will be continued at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard for the Russian Navy’s minesweeping forces, he stressed.

"These ships have proven their efficiency in practice by a whole number of their characteristics. The unique hull of these ships and the corresponding armaments enable them to worthily accomplish assigned missions," the admiral said.


The Shipyard’s specialists have completed the work for building the minesweeper’s hull and some of its superstructure and outfitting it with systems and mechanisms. Further work will proceed outside the Shipyard’s workshop. The Shipyard’s personnel will complete work on the vessel’s superstructure, assemble the tower-mast system, antenna equipment and general ship mechanisms.


Project 12700 minesweeper​


The minesweeper Anatoly Shlemov was laid down in July 2019. The vessel is the Project 12700 seventh ship under construction at the Sredne-Nevsky Shipyard on order from the Russian Navy. The warship has been named after Vice-Admiral Anatoly Shlemov who served in the Navy’s Main Shipbuilding Department and subsequently worked as the director of the United Shipbuilding Corporation’s Defense Procurement Department.

Project 12700 has been engineered by the Almaz Central Marine Design Bureau (part of the United Shipbuilding Corporation) and represents a new generation of mine countermeasure ships. The warships of this Project feature the world’s largest unique hull made of monolithic fiberglass. The unique hull enhances the warship’s strength and ensures a far better anti-mine resistance.


Russia’s Project 12700 Alexandrite-class coastal-type minesweepers are designated to fight sea mines, which the new ships can encounter in the sea and on the seabed without entering the danger zone. The minesweepers can employ various sweeps, as well as remotely controlled and autonomous underwater drones.


The minesweeper features a corrosion-resistant hull and has an unlimited service life.

A Russian Navy submarine armed with a strategic nuclear torpedo the size of a school bus was delivered to the Kremlin this week, according to an announcement from the shipyard.

Project 09852 Belgorod is based on a Russian Oscar-class guided-cruise missile submarine that has been altered to accommodate six 80-foot Poseidon nuclear torpedoes that could be armed with a warhead of up to 100 megatons, USNI News previously reported.

The submarine was delivered to the Russian Navy in a ceremony in at the Northern Fleet’s headquarters in Severodvinsk on Friday,

“The Belgorod submarine opens up new opportunities for Russia in conducting various research, allows conducting diverse scientific expeditions and rescue operations in the most remote areas of the world ocean,” according to a statement from Russian Navy chief Adm. Nikolai Anatolyevich Yevmenov.
“The ship is designed to solve diverse scientific problems, conduct search and rescue operations, and can also be used as a carrier of rescue deep-sea and autonomous unmanned underwater vehicles.”

Absent from the statement were images of the submarine or a description of the Poseidon weapons.

Poseidon, first revealed in 2015, is a nuclear strategic weapon that would have a range of thousands of miles and would “destroy important economic installations of the enemy in coastal areas and cause guaranteed devastating damage to the country’s territory by creating wide areas of radioactive contamination, rendering them unusable for military, economic or other activity for a long time,” according to a translation of a Russian presentation caught on camera by the BBC.

Russians have long complained about the strategic imbalance of American ballistic missile defense systems in Europe. Poseidon and Belgorod were created to mute the U.S. BMD advantage by creating a nuclear weapon that could duck under a U.S. BMD screen.

Belgorod is part of the Russian Navy’s specialized submarine fleet designed for espionage, deep-sea rescue and special operations operated by the Main Directorate of Deep Sea Research — known by the Russian acronym GUGI, (Glavnoye Upravleniye Glubokovodnykh Issledovaniy). The GUGI boats operate from an isolated Arctic base on the Kola Peninsula on the Barents Sea.

The Russians have also expanded their facilities in Severodvinsk, USNI News reported in August.

In addition to Poseidon, Belgorod can serve as a mothership for variety of crewed and unmanned submersibles for deep sea missions. Those submersibles include Losharik (A-12), a deep diving manned submersible that suffered a battery explosion in 2019 that killed 14 Russian submariners. The Russian Navy is currently repairing the boat, USNI News previously reported.

While the Russian Navy declined drastically following the end of the Cold War, its submarine force has remained a pressing concern for the Pentagon.

The Russians have put to sea a new generation of attack submarines armed with long-range cruise missiles capable of targeting European capitals from the North Atlantic.

In response to the Russian submarine threat, the Navy reestablished U.S. 2nd Fleet to create a theater anti-submarine warfare command in the Atlantic.
