The “Terror-Free Türkiye” process is also making itself seriously felt in Syria. Mahmut Berhudan, whom we interviewed in Ayn al-Arab (Kobani), in Aleppo Governorate, said:
> “Within a few days, we will announce the dissolution of the YPG-SDG. The autonomous administration structure will disappear. We have no demand for a separate state. We will build the new Syria hand in hand within the framework of one army, one state and one flag.”
Following the historic steps taken as part of the “Terror-Free Türkiye” process, we entered Ayn al-Arab (Kobani), in Aleppo Governorate, which has been controlled by the PYD-YPG, the Syrian branch of the PKK, since 2012.
The appearance of Ayn al-Arab, which was devastated by the terrorist organisation ISIS during the Syrian civil war, has completely disappeared.
As life continues dynamically and naturally, we observed that a great deal of Turkish was being spoken on the streets and Turkish mobile lines were being used. When people learned that we had come from Türkiye, their interest became even more positive. We also noted the large Syrian flag waving in the city centre as the greatest symbol of the new era.
Mahmut Berhudan, the PYD-SDG official responsible for Kobani, made historic statements to our newspaper. Stating that 99 percent of the difficulties concerning integration with the Syrian army and government had been overcome, Berhudan said:
> “Within the next few days, we will announce the dissolution of the YPG-SDG. The autonomous administration structure will also disappear. We will build the new Syria hand in hand within the framework of one army, one state, one flag and a common homeland.”
THE MOVE OF A THOUSAND YEARS
Emphasising that the current situation in Syria cannot be considered independently of the “Terror-Free Türkiye” process being carried out in Türkiye, Berhudan said:
> “President Erdoğan and MHP leader Bahçeli, despite the very significant risks involved, have perhaps made the move of a thousand years. In addition to stopping the bloodshed, the new page that has been opened will have very important effects not only across Syria, Iraq and Iran, but also on the geopolitics of the Middle East, which is being reshaped.
We will see this very soon. From this perspective, the mission undertaken by Mr Erdoğan and Mr Bahçeli represents a genuine patriotic responsibility and an attitude aimed at building the future. They have produced a brilliant solution. In fact, there was no other solution. It was difficult to escape this climate of chaos by ignoring or neglecting the Kurds. I believe Erdoğan and Bahçeli saw this very clearly. Such a step can only be taken by great statesmen, and they can thereby go down in history.”
THERE IS NO TURNING BACK
According to Mahmut Berhudan, who announced the establishment of the YPG in 2012, the theoretical framework for integration into the Syrian army has been completed.
> “The issue of the YPJ is one of the files that has not been completely resolved. YPG fighters who hold Turkish citizenship are another issue being discussed. However, neither of these is an insurmountable problem. From our perspective, there is no turning back at this stage.
In this context, we have buried our weapons. From now on, we will continue our existence in unity and solidarity as a part and an integral component of Syria. Under the same flag, within the framework of common values and ideals.
In fact, until the ISIS attacks in 2014, we always embraced this flag of Syria. Even when we announced the establishment of the YPG in 2012, this flag was behind me. We have always believed in this flag.
Now, alongside the military integration, it is up to Damascus to prepare an inclusive, fair and comprehensive constitution that considers and protects the rights of all of us.
This framework should not be designed only for Kurds, but should also take into account all differences, including Turkmen, Arabs, Assyrians, Yazidis, Armenians, Druze and Nusayris.
The Baath is over, and that mentality must also be completely eliminated. We sincerely continue to remain committed to the January 29 agreement.”
