There is no decisive picture that would give away the actual innards of the Tempest Engine. All we can see and gather from this picture and from various other more detailed ones, is that there are provisions for very large electrical power generation. The engine looks like it comprises of:
3 stages LP compressor
6 stages HP compressor
1 stage HP turbine
1 stage LP turbine

We know that Japanese used 5th gen single crystal turbine blades on their totally indigenous IHI XF9-1. If RR is going to use similar we do not know.
This engine does not seem to have adaptive cycle tech. Yet 6th generation jets should fly very very high at much faster speeds.
Until first prototype flies we won’t know much. Even then they may use an engine that is not meant for the actual tempest plane. (First EF prototype had flown with RB199 tornado engines)
The BAE Systems demonstrator will use EJ200 engines. First flight expected end 2027/early 2028.

EJ200 uses single crystal blade technology so I guess the GCAP engine will use that technology.

In terms of designed/built/run/in testing/certificated what is the current position with TF6000, TF10000, TF35000?

  • TF6000 to be delivered to Baykar to fly in Kızılelma prototypes expected to happen in 3-6 months (some cooling features are not implemented)
  • TF10000 to be ignited before the end of 2027 (information disclosed by TEI CEO yesterday)
  • TF35000 to be first flown in Kaan in the first quarter of 2030 (information disclosed by TAI CEO yesterday)

All modern western jet engines use single crystal turbine blade technology.
Russian engines up until AL-51-F1 engine in SU57, used directionally solidified crystal blades.

Directionally solidified crystal blades are formed in layers of crystalline lattices. During extreme heat and rotational speeds these crystal layers move over each other due to grain boundaries that occur between each layer and thus they can deform..

All Western jet engines use single crystal structure, where the whole of the blade is one single crystal. This stops grain boundaries.

By adding different exotic transitional metal elements in to the nickel super alloys, like rhenium; (By adding more of this, 3% for second gen, 6% for gen 3)
By adding ruthenium and platinum you could produce 4th and 5th gen single crystal blades.

We know that the tempest engine turbines will run at high temperatures. As the Japanese engine is rated at 24000lbf dry and 33000lbfwet thrust with 5th gen blades, the RR engine should not be below that spec.
EJ200 engine has 2nd generation CMSX-4 class blades.

TF6000 : Still in development stage. But coming close to its usable stage. Required parameters have been archived mostly. TEI is planning to deliver an engine to be integrated to Kizilelma before end of year or early next year.

TF10000 : First Engine in production. TEI plans to fire a first engine before the end of 2027.
TF35000 : TAI CEO has stated that in early 2030 a TF35000 will fly on a KAAN. There is no news if any of the engine is in production yet.
