Rohde & Schwarz was awarded a contract by Italian shipbuilder Cantiere Navale Vittoria to supply line of sight (LOS) and beyond line of sight (BLOS) communications systems for the Guardia di Finanza’s offshore patrol vessels. Guardia di Finanza is the law enforcement arm of the Italian Ministry of Economy and Finance.
Customs authorities must often monitor long coastlines with patrol boats to prevent smuggling and illegal immigration. R&S M3SR Series4100 high frequency (HF) radios, R&S M3SR Series4400 VHF/UHF radios and a dedicated Coast Guard data link (an expansion of the information and communications system) enable authorities to monitor these large coastal areas.

“We have been supporting the Guardio di Finanza on land, sea and in the air for many years,” says Mario Zaccagnini, Managing Director of Rohde & Schwarz Italy. “Rohde & Schwarz and Cantiere Navale Vittoria have a long history of collaboration. We are very proud to have our equipment deployed in these Italian vessels. We deliver safe, future-ready investments for today’s coast guards on time and on budget.”

The final offshore patrol vessel (OPV) is the largest patrol boat ever built for the Guardia di Finanza and will be commissioned in 2022. It will join the large fleet already equipped with R&S Postman (integrated communications system) and external communications systems from Rohde & Schwarz. R&S M3SR Series4100 HF radios use the SOVERON communications architecture. They are innovative, versatile software defined radios (SDR) that can be upgraded with HF wideband functions. The powerful radio platform can be expanded at any time and is a safe, future-ready investment.

“Rohde & Schwarz radio systems are extremely well engineered and are manufactured in an award-winning factory. They have unique, field-proven reliability,” says Giuseppe Di Riso, Sales Engineer at Rohde & Schwarz Italy.

Rohde & Schwarz is currently making considerable investments in HF wideband technology to support customers around the world in the transition to next generation BLOS communications systems.
