Probably to send a political signal to the Northern country(ies).

There is no such world, they cannot build nuclear weapons just because they feel like it. Then all other countries will want to do it.

In my opinion, the Republic of Korea should have nukes while there is a maniacal government in the North. Of course, this is a separate issue from the prohibition of nuclear weapons.

We should have it too. It is unacceptable that Russia, Israel and Iran have them and Turkiye does not.

It doesn't seem worth discussing the remarks. It's going to end with a happening. It's been a long time since he made a slip of the tongue, but the fact that it will continue is a bit disastrous.

It‘s simple stupidity. He‘s trying to win internal brownie points in getting tough on NK (and China). But he has no political leverage to force US in stationing tactical nuclear bombs in Korea again. I bet Japanese lobbyist are calling Washington think tanks and politicos right now to oppose any Korean nuclear ambitions.

Best way to really go nuclear is what Israel did. Keep your mouth shut, build it and deny everything besides hinting at diplomatic dinners what you „might“, could“ have in your cellar…

S. Korea's desire is understandable and I support their efforts. In addition, I really would love to see a united Korea. Somehow we should do the same in this hell of MENA to survive and shut some little flies up.

I cannot see the US re-deploying Tactical NUCS on ROC soil in the for-see-able future unless tensions get to the point where the US had no other options. However the US does have Tactical NUCS "nearby" and at the ready. No, if South Korea is really serious abot deploying a Nuclear capability, they will have to "go it alone" in the near term which I believe is an insaine idea of someone who has lost a sense of reality.

South Korea and Japan should and probably do already have programs to develop the requirements for nuclear weapons. The goal should be to have the capability to have nuclear weapons ready for deployment very quickly if needed.

However as ratifiers of the nuclear non-proliferation treaty they cannot develop nuclear weapons publicly. The point of the NPT was that the current nuclear weapon countries would share their nuclear expertise with other countires to develop nuclear power and in return they would agree to never pursure nuclear weapons. One of the major justifications of sancitioning North Korea was because it originally ratified the NPT and used the knowledge gained to build up its nuclear expertise and them withdraw from the treaty and built nuclear weapons.
Both South Korea and Japan signed the NPT and they benefited from the nuclear technology shared by the US to build their nuclear industries. If they developed nuclear weapons openly then it would be very hard for the US and other countries to not sanction them like North Korea for breaking the NPT treaty.

Because he is their man. He studied in Japan like his father, failed 9 times the law bar exam (idiot) to become a prosecutor finally afther the 10th test.

From a wealthy pro-Japanese family, dodged military service and a dream match for right wing LDP and Nippon Kaigi.

President Moon is a true Korean nationalist and a fine man. Fought for democracy in the student movement, served as special forces soldier, human rights lawyer and not corrupt (which is a f*cking anomaly in Korean politics).

Let‘s be silly and imagine a divided Canada after a gruesome civil war.

West Canada is ruled by the batshit-crazy Poilievre dynasty, a nuclear weapon state that regularly shoots ballistic missiles into the Hudson Bay. Your big neighbour USA (a dystopic police state) supports this brutal regime that announces every now and then to destroy Toronto, Montreal and Ottawa in a sea of fire.

Democratic East Canada‘s ally, the UK has stationed 28,000 troops with the Queen Elizabeth carrier battle group and promised protection under their nuclear umbrella. After an ICBM test of West Canada, leader Poilievre threatens to glass London with thermonuclear warheads. The Brits are appaled and wavering.

A few years ago in Downing Street No. 10 a populist dimwit PM Boris Trumpsen badmouthed allied East Canadians to f*cking pay for their own security and tries to withdraw British troops.

East Canada’s chief Just-In Trudeau contemplates with his cabinet what to do when this retarded Boris Trumpsen gets elected again: How about getting our own nukes, guys? We can‘t trust anyone but our maple hearted East Canadians 🍁🇨🇦

That‘s the kind of shit South Koreans have to deal with since 1953. 🫠

I truly believe that the so called "Nuclear umbrella" is fake anyway. No Country on earth will Nuke another Country because one of its allies got nuked. So yeah, having your own is infinitely times better than believing into the umbrella bs.

The obviously ridiculous scenario of my post wasn‘t meant as an insult. If you feel offended as a Canadian my apologies, sir. Maybe your and my humor code doesn‘t align. A sincere discussion of above topic is always welcomed.

I‘ll refrain from humorous attempts in the future ☮️

Thanks for that Chocopie. I have a very thick skin, however there may be members that do not. This is a great forum for all members to discuss relivant issues intelligently by not attempting to "ruffle any feathers" in the process. Apology accepted..... I think?;)

Whoa whoa whoa, holl'up. Just because his predecessor was a living, breathing catastrophe and his successor is the currently most famous dimwit in the country, that doesn't mean Moon was a successful president. Moon as a human rights activist and lawyer and as a president are two very different creatures and he was a failure of a president although extremely successful as a political leader.

Also for what his achievements are worth, he was nowhere near both Kims of the 90s, either as a democratic activist or as a president, and Roh. If anything, he is just a part of continuing chain of unfortunate result in elections, starting from Lee/Park, depending on who you ask.

To be honest kind of seems reasonable, you got North Korea and China next to you. If they can have it, why shouldn't you? Truth be told within 50 years i expect plenty of nations to have nuclear weapons.

Kim Dae Jung, Roh Moo Hyun, Moon Jae In: now you know my political color.

I judge our presidents not only by their political or economical success or failure in their presidency, I judge them also by their virtues, character and what lifes they have lived as a human being.
In that regard I disdain LMB, PGH and YSY.
