Looking at how the mid section of the hull is designed, we can pull in some possible reasons as to why it is tiled as such. The closest ERA I can find to matching similar external configuation is Switzerland's RUAG developed SidePRO-CE.

Composite explosive reactive armor design. The focus for SidePRO-CE was put on lower collateral damage. SidePRO-CE does provide protection against HEAT ammunition such as RPGs (incl. tandem shaped charge warheads) and kinetic energy ammunition.

...Harmony between tower and chassis, more balanced so symmetrically pleasing to the eye... straight and angled to fit the front face all in all well designed, done.

It looks like the leo2a4 tanks will become Altay tanks.
They will be so heavily modernised that they will be more like Altay tanks than leopard tanks.
Very large number of indigenously produced equipment will be fitted in replacement of the old.
New side ERA panels (Roketsan)
New back end ballistically strengthened cage armour.(Roketsan)
New frontal Add-on armour (Roketsan)
These have increased weight to 62 tons from 55.
YAMGOZ, LIAS, SARP, PULAT, ADIS (Aselsan)
sound warning system
L55 Main Gun
Altay Tarret.
Following initial 40 tanks , in total 89 tanks will be modernised in the first program. But all , some 350 tanks, are planned to go through the modernisation.

Very good news! Such a modernization will be a game changer and important gap will start to be filled in a very good way. I wonder how much the modernization of the 350 tanks and the initial batch of 89 tanks will cost.

When ERA armor added, is only ERA applied, or is another layer of composite armor added below or above?
There is composite armour underneath ERA plates. As the name suggests ; Explosive Reactive Armour means it is not actually the main body of the tank. Each plate reacts independently against the kinetic energy it is subjected to. And explodes when hit by an ATGM.
Nothing on top of the ERA plates though. It has to explode.
In Northern Iraq when our M60T Sabra was hit by a Russian ATGM, the ERA plates around the area it was hit exploded, decreasing the penetration force of the ATGM. Underneath the ERA , the main armour protected the inside of the tank.
When our leopard tanks are being modernised, they are improving the current armour beneath the ERA as well. They are introducing new composite armour to withstand modern sabot rounds as well.

Yusuf Akbaba about the Leopard 2A4 Modernization.

I asked about the Leo2a4 tank with the Altay Turret for you.

The modernization of 81 Leo2A4 tanks will be carried out by BMC.

BMC also proposed the Leo2A4 tank with Altay turret integrated, in addition to the SSB requests, for this modernization.

The main reason for this recommendation:
By using the Altay turret in Modernization, it was to ensure that the subsystems to be used in Altay were common in the Leo2A4 tank.
In this way, the logistics expenses of the force will be reduced in the coming years.
However, this solution is slightly more expensive than the current solution that SSB is asking for.

BMC has 2 Modernization Packages for the 81 Leopard 2A4s

- "LeoTay"
- Classic Modernization, which hasn't been shown yet.

Roketsan has one Modernization Package for 40 Leopard 2A4s

- ERA Armor Packages.

FNSS has likely one Modernization Package which is being prepared as seen a couple months ago.

- Likely together with ASELSAN.

OTOKAR hasn't respondent to SSB call.

To sum it all, this is a cluster fuck. Otokar did the right thing to stay away from it.

Roketsan modernization package is for interim and urgent needs since Leo2A4 has no armor at all against modern threats.

BMC offers Leotay with no working prototype. Currently, there is no production of Altay turret. No stabilization and mobility tests are done with the Altay turret on top of Leo2. The main gun is not stabilized and the mock-up turret on the Leo2 can just turn left and right.

I don't even know why Aselsan and FNSS are developing something together. It might be the second stage of Roketsan's urgent modernization.
