Sunak urges Scholz to back £5bn sale of jets to Saudi Arabia
Britain needs Germany to sign off on BAE Systems Typhoons deal, but Berlin is said to be concerned about human rights issues
www.telegraph.co.uk
UK, after years of negotiating, manages to sell 48 Typhoon jets to Saudi Arabia in a deal worth over 5 billion pounds Sterling. But Germany puts the brakes on it claiming Saudi human rights performance warrants sanctions and that they should not sell any parts that are related with this deal.
UK , after developing the Typhoon jet fighter, formed a consortium of 4 countries - UK, Germany, Italy and Spain - in order to share financial burden of further development and production. But Germany being Germany, now is a stumbling block in the way of other countries making money. Where as a country like France don’t have any moral responsibilities when it comes to selling weapons like Rafale to any country they deem eligible ; (It helps being a solitary country as decision maker) when it is the voice of 4 different partners making the decision, it could become a chore.
There is a condition within the agreement that formed the consortium, that stipulates that “ no other country should stop another one making a sale” . But this will mean UK producing all parts in house, that are currently being produced by Germany, making it probably too expensive to meet the set prices of the deal.
I wonder what Germany would do if UK agreed a deal with Turkey for the sale of new typhoons?
