The EU was alarmed by the actions of the Russian Federation in the Kerch Strait
Brussels will consider the situation with the closure of a part of the Black Sea by Russia for warships and state ships.
Russia's intention to close part of the Black Sea to shipping is a violation of international law. This was announced on Friday, April 16, by the EU representative for foreign affairs and security policy Peter Stano, Interfax-Ukraine reports.
"The intention of the Russian Federation to close certain areas of the Black Sea for shipping until October 2021 under the pretext of military exercises is of serious concern, especially against the background of the situation on the Ukrainian-Russian state border and in the illegally annexed Crimea," he said.
This decision violates the freedom of navigation guaranteed by the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, the diplomat said.
“The European Union expects Russia to ensure unhindered and free passage to and from the Sea of Azov in accordance with international law. The EU recalls its unwavering support for the sovereignty, territorial integrity, unity and independence of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders and calls on Russia to do the same the most, "Stano added.
He also said that the EU Foreign Affairs Council will discuss this situation during the discussion on Ukraine on April 19.
