Indonesia orders 10,000 oxygen concentrators from Singapore

Indonesia orders 10,000 oxygen concentrators from Singapore

Jakarta (ANTARA) - Indonesia has ordered 10 thousand oxygen concentrators from Singapore to meet surging domestic demand amid a spike in COVID-19 cases, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said.

"We ordered 10 thousand (units) and some of them have arrived on a Hercules jet from Singapore, and we will also have shipments from other places should we experience a shortage," he said at an online press conference, which was streamed from Jakarta via the Presidential Secretariat's YouTube channel on Tuesday.

Pandjaitan, who is also coordinator for the implementation of emergency mobility restrictions (PPKM) in Java and Bali, explained that oxygen concentrators will be distributed to COVID-19 patients with mild symptoms.

Oxygen concentrators can extract oxygen from the air and process it so that it can be inhaled by patients.

The government is continuing to mobilize oxygen supply for medical needs, the minister said.

At the moment, 100 percent of oxygen supplies for industries are being diverted for COVID-19 handling, he added.

"This is to help those in isolation and those who are being intensively treated," he remarked.

The government has redirected oxygen supplies from Morowali in Central Sulawesi, Cilegon in Banten, and Batam in Riau Islands, Pandjaitan informed.

The minister had previously coordinated with the Ministry of Industry to map out oxygen needs of all regions.

The Industry Ministry has said that oxygen producers are now "100-percent obligated" to redirect oxygen they produce for medical purposes. With such a policy in place, of the 1,700 tonnes of oxygen produced every day in the country, 1,400 tonnes is being distributed on the island of Java, it added.

Smaller oxygen industries have also been directed to produce pharmaceutical oxygen, the ministry said.

Indonesia prepares to import oxygen as coronavirus cases rise

Indonesia prepares to import oxygen as coronavirus cases rise

Jakarta (ANTARA) - The Indonesian government is seeking to import oxygen for COVID-19 patients admitted to hospital emergency rooms in several areas amid a spike in infections, the Health Minister has disclosed.

"We have also coordinated with the industry minister to import 6 cubic meter and 1 cubic meter tubes of oxygen to meet additional needs in hospital emergency rooms," Budi Gunadi Sadikin said during a working meeting with Commission IX of the House of Representatives (DPR), which was monitored virtually from Jakarta on Monday.

The distribution of liquid oxygen to hospitals in large volumes using tanks is not optimal for meeting patient needs, the minister averred.

Since the majority of hospitals use oxygen cylinders for additional emergency rooms, they do not utilize liquid oxygen, he explained.

“So, there is a slight problem in distribution. Previously, oxygen could be delivered directly by putting it in a large liquid tank to be distributed within the oxygen network. Now, oxygen has to be delivered in canisters," he said.

During Monday’s working meeting, the minister reported that the current national oxygen production capacity totals 866 thousand tons per year. "However, the utilization of all factories is now only 75 percent," he pointed out.

Thus, in real terms, Indonesia’s oxygen production capacity is 640 thousand tons per year, Sadikin said. About 75 percent, or 458 thousand tons, of the oxygen serves industrial needs, he added.

For example, it is used in the production of steel, nickel and other industrial production, he continued.

"The quota for medical needs is only 25 percent, or 181,000 tons per year," said Sadikin.

The Industry Ministry is committed to converting industrial oxygen for medical purposes to produce 90 percent, or 575 thousand tons, of oxygen to meet medical demand amid the COVID-19 surge, he added.

Oxygen cylinders will be supplied to hospitals in the provinces of Central Java, West Java, and East Java, he disclosed.

"We have to provide logistics (support to allow the oxygen) to be distributed to hospitals," the minister said.

now it's getting more ridiculous .....

"According to some senior PAF officers we talked with, there was a recent incident wherein a high-ranking PAF unit commander who used his rank and position to gain access and fly one of the PAF's newest aircraft. Despite being a seasoned pilot, the said PAF high ranking officer lacking previous training and experience with the new aircraft.

And because of this, the said senior PAF officer failed to safely and properly land the new aircraft, and damaging it in the process. Now the aircraft is non-operational, and may need millions of pesos of funding to replace damaged parts and conduct repairs.

PAF sources confirmed that the PAF itself tried to hide the incident, and has instructed PAF personnel to keep quiet about this. And despite the incident happening sometime ago, it was only lately that the PAF Safety Office started investigating on the incident."
