Saudi Arabia to Host World Defence Show in 2022

Saudi Arabia will hold a biennial fully integrated defence show from March 6-9, 2022, the Kingdom’s General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI) has announced.

The World Defence Show, in Riyadh, will see air, land, sea, security and satellite defence systems brought together for the first time in Saudi Arabia.

“With global defence spending hitting US$1.9 trillion in 2019, marking a 3.6 per cent increase over the previous year’s figures, the World Defense Show will bring together the biggest defence players in the industry to discuss the challenges facing defence industry decision makers,” Ahmad Al-Ohali, Governor of GAMI says.

Saudi Arabia spends US$70 billion per year on defence, making it the third biggest spender on defence globally and the single largest importer of arms in the world. The country has set an ambitious target to localise 50 per cent of its military expenditure by 2030 as it seeks to strengthen its ties with defence industry partners from around the world, while encouraging investment opportunities and a new generation to aspire to work in the defence industry.

“With technology accelerating, the World Defense Show is being held at a time when the industry is evolving, and defence considerations are becoming increasingly complex. It marks an important move for the defence community to convene and come together in the presence of Saudi Arabia’s key leadership,” Shaun Ormrod, CEO of the World Defense Show, informs.

The show’s venue is estimated to accommodate 80,000 square meters of floor space, and will feature demonstration facilities and virtual technological capabilities to showcase every defence domain on an unprecedented scale, Ormrod, who was the former CEO of Farnborough Airshow, adds.

Included in the show will be both live and virtual demonstrations of the possibilities that integrations can provide across all defence domains. The topic of discussion will be focused on finding interoperable solutions across air, land, sea, security and satellite defence systems. It will be for the first time that all five defence areas are brought together under one roof in Saudi Arabia.

Saudi Arabian Military Industries (SAMI) plans to produce a Saudi-made drone, state television al-Ekhbariya quoted Chief Executive Walid Abukhaled as saying on Sunday.

Abukhaled also said that more than 50 percent of military spending will be localized by 2030, adding that the company is working on establishing “the world’s largest munitions factory” and localizing defense industries.

Established in 2017, SAMI, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Kingdom’s Public Investment Fund (PIF) and the National Champion of Military Industries Localization, is one of the strategic partners at the World Defense Show (WDS) which kicked off in Riyadh earlier on Sunday.

In a statement published Saturday, SAMI said it aims to speed up its “transformation to become one of the top 25 defense and security companies in the world by 2030.”

“Apart from showcasing its innovative and comprehensive defense products and systems, SAMI aims to expand its partnerships with globally renowned OEMs, establish new joint ventures and subsidiaries, create more employment opportunities, and boost its exports through its participation in WDS 2022,” it added.

Saudi Arabia’s first World Defense Show opened to the public on Sunday morning.

The show features nearly 600 exhibitors from more than 40 countries, and organizers predict that 30,000 people will attend.

The exhibition, which is due to be held every two years, is organized by the Kingdom’s General Authority for Military Industries (GAMI).
