Iraqi sources reveal a deal to buy Turkish "Bayraktar" planes for $ 100 million

1233744095.jpeg

If the deal is completed, it will be the first of its kind between Iraq and Turkey in the military field, as the Iraqi military arsenal for the past decades has been limited in this field to Russian, American and Eastern European weapons.

Informed sources of Al-Araby Al-Jadeed indicated that the Iraqi Council of Ministers approved, about two weeks ago, a number of amendments to the armament plans related to the air force, including the approval of a plan to purchase Turkish drones, as part of the Iraqi air combat effort aimed at securing the desert and mountainous areas, especially the Iraqi-Syrian border.

She confirmed that the trend came on the recommendation of the Iraqi Ministry of Defense to the Council of Ministers, and it is likely that an Iraqi military delegation will head to Ankara during the coming period to discuss the issue with Turkish officials.

An Iraqi general in Baghdad told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that the Turkish side had previously expressed its willingness to "support Baghdad in the field of war on terrorism and to equip it with the necessary monitoring, storage and control equipment for the pockets and remnants of ISIS ," adding that "Bayrakdar has proven its efficiency in more than From a place in recent years, and Iraq's acquisition of it will represent an important shift and support for the capabilities of the Iraqi Air Force.

The same official touched on "the need for training and preparation courses for the Iraqi military cadres on these planes, if the agreement with Turkey to purchase the planes is successful, and this may take several months."

An Iraqi military delegation, led by the Minister of Defense, Juma Inad, had visited Ankara and met with Turkish Defense Minister Hulusi Akar, on August 19, on the sidelines of the Istanbul International Defense Industry Fair.

The meeting was followed by statements by the Iraqi Minister of Defense Jumaa Inad, in which he said that his country wants to buy the armed Bayraktar marches, Atak attack helicopters and advanced weapons from Turkey.

Compensate for the lack of flying hours
Commenting on this, the expert in Iraqi military affairs, retired Colonel Ahmed Abdul Salam al-Taei, told Al-Araby Al-Jadeed that Turkish drones are better for Iraq now than continuing to rely on the F-16 squadron that it owns, which have the same high cost of flight and ammunition, in addition to Finally, it was also linked to the political file.

He added that "the Turkish marches will compensate Iraq for the lack of flying hours related to surveillance, and it also means the entry of the Iraqi Air Force with a new generation of advanced military action," noting that "the vast areas of the Iraqi desert need this type of aircraft, and Iraq's neighborhood to Turkey can secure He has the continuous technical side with regard to maintenance and development on this type of aircraft, except for ammunition."

While describing the step as "very important", he added, "The most important thing is to implement the approach, as many of the government's decisions are faced with a political rejection that prevents them from being completed.

Turning The Tables: The UK’s Case For Buying The Bayraktar TB2

''The Turkish Minister for Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank revealed in mid-October 2021 that the UK is seriously interested in Turkish UCAVs, stating that "The United Kingdom is interested in Turkish Armed Unmanned Aerial Vehicles. Now they have to decide. We have presented them with our options. They are currently seriously considering these options." While a concrete interest in Turkish weaponry by Great Britain (and not vice versa) is arguably a first in the history of both countries, the announcement by Mustafa Varank nonetheless received little to no news coverage outside of Turkey.''

Why are they announcing it before a decision is made? This jeopardizes the chance of the arms purchase. Some people could/will put pressure on UK government for not buying it.

I don't think the UK can be pressured.

It can be pressured by its people. Certain groups in the government or society can slander Turkey and demand not buying it. A successful media campaign could theoretically stop the deal(if there was one). Besides, what's the point of announcing it before the deal goes through? What gain can be made?

It can provoke other buyers to act at once as there would be no need for any other confirmation that the product is worth the money. This makes sense as there are negotiations going on with several other nations.

IMO, the UK buying Turkish Arms is much more valuable than selling the vehicle urgently to a few more small countries. We already have our plate full. But if we could open the door to the Western(rich) countries we could sell a slew of defense products at much higher profit margins to wealthy countries and form deeper bonds that will help us to defend our needs in case of a conflict of interests. If you want to jeopardize that then you should have a good reason. And the reason you cited is not good enough, imho.

Announcing before a sell will not jeopardize a sales to the UK as the news will come out at some point in the process anyway, it is not like the UK will buy them secretly, public will know before sales.

Maritime Success: Nigeria Orders Turkish OPV 76s

''More than just arranging for the sale of OPV 76s to Nigeria, the deal also proves that Turkish shipyards no longer have to rely on foreign-made weaponry when offering their ships for export. It won't be long before the Turkish defence industry will be capable of producing every type of associated armament, including cannons, anti-ship missiles, air-defence missiles and equipment such as radars and vertical launching systems (VLS). At this pace, Turkey will likely be self-sufficient in nearly every requirement for its defence sector in ten to fifteen years. Its journey to this self-sufficiency is arguably the fastest of its kind occurring today, surpassing even that of South Korea. Countries currently supplying weaponry to Turkey might in ten years instead be acquiring it from Turkey, showing the fruits of decades of investment in its defence industry.''
