Sad

two days of national mourning in the memory of legendary singer Lata Mangeshkar. Known as the 'Nightingale of India', Lata Mangeshkar passed away at Candy Breach Hospital in Mumbai early Sunday. She was 92.

" A two-day national mourning will now be observed in memory of Lata Mangeshkar on February 6 and 7. The National flag will fly at half-mast for two days, as a mark of respect," government sources said.

Lata Mangeshkar.was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital on January 8 after she tested positive for Covid-19. She was under treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) over the past couple of weeks.

After showing signs of improvement recently, her health condition deteriorated. Unfortunately, she passed away today, leaving the entire nation in a state of grief.

Lata Mangeshkar's mortal remains will be shifted to Prabhukunj, her Peddar Road residence, from 12 pm to 3 pm for homage. Later, her body will be shifted to the Shivaji Park in Mumbai at around 4.30 pm. Her cremation will take place at Shivaji Park.

Expressing grief over the demise of Lata Mangeshkar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi tweeted, "I am anguished beyond words. The kind and caring Lata Didi has left us. She leaves a void in our nation that cannot be filled. The coming generations will remember her as a stalwart of Indian culture, whose melodious voice had an unparalleled ability to mesmerise people."

We did. His name was Nehru.
I dont think so , Attaturk was literal defenition of a secular leader , who set the bench mark of no religious interference in State affairs . The way he controlled clergy set a bench mark.
Nehru was tilted towards one sect of society , the kind of HRD ministers he has appointed led to literal glorification of Mughals , while literally sidelined the likes of Cholas , PAndya , Guptas , Ahoms , Marathas under his education policy King Akbar become Akbar the great , while Shivaji become a mountain rat . Nehru at max was a dreamer ( who bought quotes like hindi chini bhai bhai) and institution builder no one can steal that credit from him .

Probably the song which defined her the most -

Yes the lyric that stands out most to me is "is liye suno ye kahani".

More than any other descriptor....India is a story...of many stories.

It is with heavy heart we say farewell to Lataji who has accompanied us for her part in it...in that indescribable way she did with her voice.

May she rest in peace.
I know her music from the Bollywood movies we used to watch when we were kids(VHS video tapes).

I strongly urge all Indian members to watch this debate of young Indian Muslims and Hindus. @Nilgiri @crixus @Zapper @Jackdaws et al.

How respectful, refreshing, well-educated and enlightened these young Indians are, it is amazing. It is so different to what we see today in the news. Hateful, racist, extrem voices have taken over the main stream media of India. They're poisoning the Indian youth. However, seeing that people - especially young people like these six - still exist, gives me hope for India's future.
In school, we really didn't have any feeling of difference. This sounds bizarre to me. Things have changed so terribly, in the wrong direction.

That point about the curiousity - after 1,000 years of co-existence! - is a really good one. It didn't exist in my family, but on our school forum, I have watched with astonishment as someone asks another details about his religious beliefs and practices that should never have existed. It should have been well-known to all.

Perhaps my parents' Bangladeshi origins (from what is today Bangladesh, and was then east Bengal) had something to do with this acceptance and engrained knowledge that living embedded within Muslim society brings.

Very true.
Post 2014, there is a policy to degrade Muslims. What we heard about being unable to take the qurbani meat along with them is typical, and is widespread, specifically, in the cow-belt, in the BIMARU states.

So we have a staunch Hindutvavadi within the group. Full of justifications and excuses.

It wasn't the government that lynched Muslims, he thinks; individuals have, and they are arrested, and the PM has said something about it.

Almost every interaction brings a reaction to me; I would really like to react to each, but it would be too difficult. Too much to say, too many things to address.

This is historically inaccurate.

Muslims did not get the country divided. A section of Muslims did. For every Jinnah, there was a Maulana Azad too. Even in Pakistan, there were the likes of Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan, known as Frontier Gandhi who received India's highest civilian honor - The Bharat Ratna.

Another facet - when there was a population migration of Muslims to Pak and Hindus to India - the properties they left behind was given to incoming immigrants based on how much they had in the place they left.

What became a headache for the Nehru Govt. shortly after independence was the amount of Muslims wanting to come back in a couple years after migrating to Pakistan and laying a claim to their property which had now been awarded to Hindus who had come from Pakistan!

@Joe Shearer probably knows better. But if I recall reading, Govt. of India had to enact a law restricting the movement of Muslims returning to India from West Pakistan but they didn't apply this restriction to East Pakistan.
What @crixus has said is the most incredible load of rubbish. I feel confounded by the misinformation and the wrong facts that have gripped his mind, and he is certainly not one of the dumb, driven, manipulation-prone mob.

On ground it's relatively peaceful. If there is atmosphere of poison with 200m Muslims there would be issues everyday. Killings and rape everyday. There is respect on the ground. This is not to say tension or friction do not exists. It does and will be there but will be managed.

However the media has gotten "loud". It's toxic to even watch some channels.
That may be true, what you have stated, in some parts of the country. In Calcutta and in Hyderabad, in Kerala, in Tamil Nadu, by and large. It is EMPHATICALLY not true of UP, or even of MP, or Rajasthan, or Haryana, or Uttarakhand, or Bihar. The situation in those states is extremely dangerous and volatile. Trying to underplay or downplay it, trying to shift the blame on to the media, is thoroughly unrealistic.

You should do some research on Muslim countries, then you'll understand that you cant call them just Muslims.
@Joe Shearer can help you alot in this case.
I refuse to respond to utterly stupid statements of the sort that @crixus seems to have made it is business to make, consistently and in a most frustrating manner. Slap everybody together and call them 'Muslims'? Are you kidding me? Even right here, right in India, there is so much differentiation between all who essentially follow the Prophet; where is the excuse for such abysmal ignorance about the situation world-wide?

Well, one of my biggest questions is about the background of this group of young Indians. How representative is this group of people from a socioeconomical point of view actually?
Do they belong to higher income segments of the society? Again, why is there never any South Indian present in these debates?

I would like to know very, very much how South Indians think about this issue. I feel like they're more tolerant when it comes to Indian Muslims.

Generally speaking, I hear rarely criticism from Muslims of the Subcontinent that aims specifically at South Indians. I mean, even the scientific community has barely produced any studies examining the relationship between mostly North Indian Muslims and South Indian Hindus. It's a very fascinating topic actually.
