Jackal armed UAV scores first order with 160-unit Taiwan deal

Flyby Technology – a UK-based developer of unmanned air vehicles (UAVs) – has scored a launch order for its armed Jackal drone, with a 160-unit commitment from Taiwan.

Jon Parker, founder and chief executive of the company, speaking to FlightGlobal from the DSEI show in London on 14 September, said the vertical take-off and landing Jackal is “just right for Taiwan” as it can operate across multiple domains, including maritime.

No details of the contract value have been disclosed, but Parker says the UAV is pitched at a price-point “between expendable and attritable”.

Parker also declines to reveal a delivery timetable, citing customer sensitivities, but points to the rapid development of the platform, which went from “zero to firing two missiles” within six months.

In tests disclosed in April, but conducted in October 2022, a pair of Thales Martlet lightweight multirole missiles were launched from the platform. The trials were carried out as part of a project sponsored by the Royal Air Force’s (RAF’s) Rapid Capabilities Office.

Parker says Flyby is keen to integrate additional weapons onto the Jackal and is in discussions with several missile suppliers.

Although Taipei has placed the first order for the Jackal, Parker says other potential customers could receive their aircraft first, given the challenges around localising production in Taiwan.

“There are other customers that might be able to get there quicker,” he adds.

Jackal has been developed in the UK, with input from Flyby’s Turkish sister company FlyBVLOS Technology.

Final assembly will also be in the UK and Flyby is talking to potential suppliers, including for the Jackal’s engines.

Power for the two pairs of rotors and the electric ducted fans currently comes from batteries, but production versions will instead use a turbogenerator. Maximum take-off weight is 105kg (231lb), which will rise to 155kg or above with the new propulsion system.

“There are some very big British names behind this,” says Parker, a former RAF fighter pilot.

He says Jackal’s role is “battlefield interdiction”, targeting armoured vehicles, aircraft or personnel.

“Our role is to go behind enemy lines and push everything so far back that it becomes irrelevant.”

Jackal will be capable of performing collaborative and swarming operations, and the company will also look to add manned-unmanned teaming capabilities.

Additionally, Flyby intends for the UAV to become a testbed for “new and exciting technologies”, he adds.

Prove it.

I wasn't questioning the specs of Karaok, I was questioning the specs of OMTAS

My point EXACTLY!
I only know the specs of seeker, warhead, flight path and attack angle of Javelin. There‘re no such infos available for Karaok to me. No proof but visible differences of wings and body designs of both ATGM and common sense, man 😁

I don't compare it with OMTAS, I compare it with FGM-148 Javelin.
You said here you compare Karaok to Javelin and assumes that it can reach 4 km as well.

In that case, it would be logical to accept Javelin's range numbers would carry over to the Karaok 1-to-1.
As of now, Karaok‘s CLU provides only 2,5 km range according to Roketsan, not 4 km.

Regarding questioning the range of OMTAS? 🤷‍♂️

I know what I am about to say is unpopular, but I think within next decade these ATGMs will loose much of their significance against the armour of first world armies. At least in the sense of what we witnessed in Ukraine.
because now state of art Active protection systems are being installed on all the new generation Tanks and IFVs. Abrams M1 A2 SEP3, challenger 3, leopard 2 a8, Altay, VT-4, KF-41 Lynx AS-21 Redback are all coming equipped with Trophy, iron fist, Akkor, GL-6, etc. And they can indeed defeat top attack ammunitions. With the operational use of Trophy with a success rate of 95%, we can reliably conclude that Active protection system do works.

I think in the future anti armour system capabilities will get much more complicated in order to defeat APS. 70mm Rockets could play a part in this.
Haven‘t seen any test footage of Trophy or other APS successfully defending against a top-attack missile like Javelin or Spike diving steep down at a nearly 90° angle.

How about fast reloading? Saturated and simultanous attacks will overwhelm APS as well. I don‘t believe all this marketing promises of Rafael, Rheinmetall and others without visible proof on Youtube🧐

Countries looking for helmets for their soldiers are knocking on Turkiye's door:
• CES Kompozit, which has become one of the world's leading manufacturers of ballistic protective solutions, has increased its capacity significantly in response to increasing demand.
• Annual helmet production capacity increased from 30-40 thousand to 190 thousand
• Capacity will increase to 240 thousand by the end of 2024

Exports of Turkish UAVs

1. ANKA - 10 countries
2. AKSUNGUR - 4 countries
3. TB2 - 33 countries
4. Akinci - 8 countries

Very happy for ANKA’s success! Some countries inducted 3 types of Turkish UAVs I.e. very happy customers.

TB-2 is the most exported UAV while ANKA is the 2nd most exported UAV in the world (in terms of number of countries)

This is Oryx's now outdated list. Akinci is tied for the 3rd spot with MQ-9. Crazy to think that top 3 most exported UCAVs in the world are from Turkiye. Truly the #1 drone power in the world.

Guys, this is Roketsan official who said the Karaok system is capable of engaging and destroying armor and fortified bunkers at a distance of 2-4 kilometers (1.2-2.5 miles), not Bekdil himself.

Maybe there is a misunderstanding I don't know

I remember that there were range increase for UMTAS and OMTAS but they are not updated the official figures. Maybe it's what they actually can achieve, and brochures are just for official figures.

İLTER, an electronic warfare solution developed by the Turkish defence industry to neutralise drone threats, continues its success in exports.

The İLTER Drone Detection and Interception System product family, developed by Boğaziçi Defence with a domestic content of over 90 percent, continues to be in demand both at home and abroad with its performance in the field. Having succeeded in exporting İLTER to more than 10 countries, Boğaziçi Defence exported new drone countermeasure systems to Azerbaijan, where it had previously supplied products.

ILTER J250 Drone Detection and Interception System, the new member of ILTER family, performs fully automatic detection, jamming and deception tasks against rotary or fixed wing mini/micro drones with its RF sensors. The system, which has a total output power of more than 250 watts, has been developed for mobile and fixed settlements with its built-in battery.

The system, which has 360-degree detection and interception capability against multiple drone attacks, can detect up to 8 kilometres and can spoof coordinates in GNSS bands. Thanks to its coordinate spoofing feature, the system, which emits fake GNSS signals to prevent threats flying autonomously, can remove the threat from the protected area to the desired coordinates.

The ILTER HP Mobile High Power GNSS Spoofing and ISM Blocking System, on the other hand, can jam/block target points up to 80 kilometres from secure areas due to its long range of action and mobility. With the line-of-sight software that calculates the target points under the influence of the system, the antennas on the system are automatically directed to the target and lossless jamming, blinding and deception can be performed. The system, installed on a 4X4 closed chassis vehicle, can operate continuously for 24 hours.

The drone is Turkish. IP rights of the platform has been purchased by the UK.
I personally raised a lotta stink about this in the Turkish drone programs thread, go check there.
Still, they bought it from UK Flyby Technology not from Fly BVLOS.
Coşkunöz Holding iştiraki Fly BVLOS Technology

Taiwan's GEOSAT Aerospace & Technology and Flyby Technology have signed an agreement to enable transfer of technology (ToT) to manufacture the latter's Jackal unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) in Taiwan.

Why wouldn‘t they put it in the brochure? Would be a major selling point. A light weight 16kg portable ATGM (launcher included) with 4km range is unheard of. They could sell it like hot cakes 🔥

Just like what I said before. Its all on the CLU.

Keep the enemy guessing.

Just like I insinuated before. EVERYONE reads those brochures.

I see what you're pointing at.
Given the sensitivity of the case, its better for us to have the space to distance ourselves from this sale.
But the drone is ours, make no mistake!

It seems to me Janes made a little error. Evidence is clear. And You can check both of their websites. Turkish firm announced the deal on their website while British firm did not.
