Iranian Islamic Revolution of 1979 was really important to boosted the spirit of those with political Islam ambitions of that time regardless of Sunni or Shia or whatever, one of the lots of factors. That revolution proved that Islamic revolution possible.
Months after what happened in Iran, again, the Islamists did something in Saudi Arabia that changed this country government and Islamic scholars interactions for decades. Saudi of 70s was less strict on their social policies compared to Saudi of 21s century. Yes, Saudi was worked with Muhammad bin Abdul Wahhab long time before when they fought against the Ottoman, but 60s 70s was far from that influence. The Islamists didn’t like that “westernization” they said and did something in Grand Mosque of Mecca, for the sake of exposure I believe.
After that action, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia started their Islamization (again) with the helped of Ulema, including that also the teachers or those who influenced the perpetrators of the action before.
