The Indigenous Mini-Submarine Will Begin Sea Trials

Designing and producing a submarine represents the cutting edge of marine technologies. DATUM, a company founded within Istanbul Technical University, has developed a submarine in the “mini” class, and in the coming months, the submarine will begin its sea trials.

Dr. Münir Cansın Özden, Chairman of the Board of DATUM, was the guest of Tolga Özbek. In the broadcast we prepared together with #bitlo, he shared the latest information about their submarine work.

Approval for Critical and Detailed Design

The aim is to test the systems intended for the Turkish Naval Forces’ ongoing MİLDEN Project. Providing information on the subject, Özden said:

“An indigenous submarine design has been completed. There were no foreign experts involved. The Presidency of Defense Industries approved the critical design phase. Turkish Lloyd approved the detailed design. Fifty-three points were tested. The prototype has been completed. We conducted its test at a depth of 400 meters on July 11, 2023.

We performed the test of the actual submarine on February 14, 2024. The submarine hull, with its propeller, was produced for the first time and received its certification. Within a few months, the sea trials will begin.”

The Multi-Purpose Mini Submarine is 12 meters long and weighs 36 tons. With a width of 2.3 meters, it can be transported by aircraft. The submarine can dive to 100 meters, while its systems are capable of operating at depths of up to 300 meters.

The second step of the work will be the Trança. The mini-submarine system will also include weaponry.

Up Up Up.

Dreams come into reality.

36ton mini sub could be carried by truck wherever you want. Unexpected, sudden attacks could be carried with 4 crew. You don't need long preparings. Noone could dare to approach Turkish coastal lines and EEZ.

It is something highly experimental, they haven't tested the pressure hull of the submarine or submarine itself, but a scaled pressurized tank to validate manufacturer and designer capabilites at 400 meters. It also seems odd; 'Submarine is capable of diving to 100 meters, but systems are capable of operating at 300 meters'.
Yet another great project wasted in hands of a egoistical figure.

It literally can operate a few hours on batteries. At few knots.

Told y'all. It is under construction, In a few weeks the company is expected to hold an event to present the progress.

Primarily a test submarine, technology demonstator and base for future unmanned submarines as a working mini-sub platform. However, it requires decent amount of workmanship to transform into a military product, as is - it offers quite a good start. It is a great capability and know-how to be acquired by a start-up.

Double hull (FRP outer hull, steel inner hull), 2 foldable periscope configuration, 2 torpedoes (for tests), electric submarine, 4 crew (2 operator, 2 test team).

Awesome. So it will be built just As a test bed to test EW and other components for future mini sub projects. Is it correct?

Testing any underwater or submarine based components, and possibly anything would be related to unmanned submarines in far future.

Hi @Anmdt
Memories revisited and got confused. You were, AFAIK, quite hopeful of this experimental project as well. Could you please elaborate what exactly was wasted?

Will not have a diesel? So 100 ton weight happens most optimal solution for 2-3 days missions?
So there must be minimum weight/ endurance ratio due to battery technology.??? ( Also+ fuel reservuar)

BTW you told about trancha before.

It was promising when the project has been granted to a start-up that had realistic goals to build a mini-sub for various purposes (ISR, Oceanograpyhy) and to build a corporate culture, construction - integration know-how situationed outside the realms or military submarine building facilities. It was promising for utilizing existing pressurized tank manufacturers for building pressure hull of a mini scale submarine.

However, the founder managed to scrap away the built know-how. All of his team who worked dearly on project has scattered away, specifically away from him. The project has missed great deadlines - expectable for the first time, budget overruns - also expectable and SSB, the project grant and management authority has been patient through all, offered a way out to fun the company further - yet again, he declined the offer. A promising project turned into wasted of money.

Meanwhile zero coordination with Aselsan, Roketsan and Milden DPO / Golcuk Shipyard literally made them all say - " So what are we gonna exactly do with this?". As Golcuk reiterated that in sonar systems it makes least amount of sense to test an individual sensor unit, or scaled down versions for how sound waves travel and scatter in sea water at various depths, the test campaigns highly depended on transmitted sound power. Aselsan said the same, there was zero coordination, the image which displays 'integrated test payload' also wasn't made in coordination.

Such projects highly depends on an enthusiastic team self-sacrificing team, not a single invidiual who dearly glorify himself.

Yet the project still has a promising future if he maneuvers right, and transforms this platform into something meaningful, with coordination and cooperation.

It has no diesel, it wasn't made for such. Could it be revised, enlarged for a diesel or gasoline generator? I also doubt. Integrating a generator is another trouble for such platform barely offering a sitting position for crew of two. The interior is as tight as it gets in a battle tank.

They should overhaul the design, facilitate larger pressure hull, new building - welding procedures, new construction spots - subcontractors. Could only happen, if Sefine shipyard, being where the integration of the components for the mini-sub take place, decide to form a submarine division.

It seemed a very indigenous tactical solution for many variable naval tasks and maritime jobs. It was just two years ago. And seems that SSB also did what they could to salvage it. Damn, it was a beautiful project.
Now I see what was wasted. It’s outrageous.

Thank you @Anmdt
