The exaggeration in this place is killing me. US navy doesn't really rely on frigates like we do mate, in fact, I think these were the first ones. They don't even use cruisers, they use destroyers; of which they have a fuck ton already and building like half a dozen right now.
Not at all. They used to have plenty of frigates, 50 Knox and 50 OHPs served in USN between 60s and 90s. USN always saw frigates as escort ships, to escort convoys that would carry vital materiel and manpower between US and Europe against submarines and surface raiders. Now in Pacific, they will rely on convoys again, but they don't have escorts. Destroyer number is simply not enough. Constellation was to bring back the escort role at a fraction of price of a destroyer, but they fumbled that. They don't have enough escorts now.

They also used to have plenty of cruisers as well, for fleet air defence, like Belknaps and later Ticonderogas. Arleigh Burkes grew and grew in size and scope and with Aegis, were able to replace the cruiser role mostly. Arleigh Burke class, especially after Flight IIa are really nearly the most perfect ship, great all rounder, but they are just too expensive with new Flight IIIs coming at 2 billion+ and they simply don't have enough of them. As a single ship touted as that can do everything from ASW to surface warfare to air defence and BMD, they simply lack the numbers to do all of these mission sets. They need to compartmentalize.

And the burke successor is heavier than ticonderoga. They seriously should have bought frems as is
