Covid-19: India red list add 'may be too late', Prof Mark Walport says

Prof Mark Walport told the BBC he believed the new variant was "more transmissible" and there were "good reasons" for keeping it out of the UK.
Health officials say it is too early to know whether it is more transmissible.
India has been reporting more than 200,000 cases daily since 15 April.
Its capital Delhi announced a week-long lockdown after a record spike in cases overwhelmed the city's healthcare system.

Prime Minister Boris Johnson is to lead a coronavirus press conference from Downing Street this evening amid growing concerns about an Indian variant of Covid-19.

Not only had India's rocketing coronavirus rate seen the country record more than 150,000 new cases a day for three weeks, but the UK is concerned about a Covid strain first identified there which has since been found in Britain.

Well the Indian variant of the Chinese wuhan virus definitely is spreading. It shares some commonality with the South African variant of the same is what I heard.

Western neighbours get desperate and happy seeing such news and post it.
Sometimes take the time to look at the mirror.

Why is India seeing such a huge surge in Covid-19 cases?

A ‘double mutant’ strain, lack of medical supplies and the relaxation of lockdowns have combined to foment disaster

You better take care of yourself, you yourselves are facing a 3rd wave, just 35,000 tests everyday while we do 1.8 million tests everyday. No test equals no surge in Pakistan.

Non. But when people catch the disease they get sick and the real sick end up in hospitals. The surge overwhelms hospitals. While many hospitals are under stress but the situation is no where like India. You can check if you want. The government is concerned about the Indian variant and border has been closed. Also major cities might be locked down.

But in India the situation appears to be meltdown. And the government appears to be fudging the figures.

IMO, the countries are on different playing fields w.r.t medical credibility (both institutional and practical).

W.r.t covid specifically Pakistan is gutted from the get go if you dig into the details:

The very few tests that are done....often return false negatives back.

Co-morbidities result in lot of deaths going unreported (compared to how other countries define it) given the specific age group involved....so it really isn't a case of "hospital surges and pressures" to begin with.

There are other issues in that article (it does a fairly good job).

I just don't take a country that is 15 years behind India on infant mortality rate and still has polio endemic to it seriously on its medical statistic numbers, especially in relative real time.

In any case, India must pull up its sleeves and do everything possible to get the 100 million vaccine dose level doubled and then tripled etc.

We cannot dawdle like rest of region that haven't paid one iota of attention to their actual medical production development and capacity where it matters....and are stuck waiting on others completely and have next to no vaccine doses given so far.

It's heart wrenching to see the current situation in India. I hope all states immediately impose a strict lockdown and also stop giving out vaccines to other countries until atleast most Indians get a first dose

Lot of the unrestricted openings of things were completely uncalled for....."new variant" or not. States and centre are playing blame game already....when both are equally responsible in this mismanagement of opening up like this too soon (rather than keep things very precise to economic livelihood till a good vax rate is achieved among most vulnerable first).

The export program has been almost completely stopped I believe... especially with greater Indian deployment capacity finally catching up with production.

The issue preventing Indian covax (WHO) commitments is that US input for these have been severely restricted from US side.

Till that is lifted, India has little option but to produce only for local use....or till local capacities for those inputs come online which will take some time.

In a way the mass-testing regime helps India's argument (as priority for the covax production at SII) here as the numbers reflect closer to reality than it otherwise would.

Yeah we know how much media is controlled by ISPR
Anyways not for my concerns
The variant is dangerous and would overwhelm any country's healthcare, even US or China.

Wuhan city wiped out the Covid in less than 2 months, since then all was back to normal. blaming China for the incompetency of your government won't help to battle this virus the least.

We, as citizens are calling out the incompetency of the Indian Govt on various platforms. Go check them. However, the incompetency of the Indian authorities doesn't mean that CCP gets a free pass for hiding facts.

Whomever is worth convincing is long convinced on the CCP's utter treacherous deceit on this pandemic in first place.

Everyone (worthwhile) knows we will never know the true number inside China either for at least a very long time, if ever.
