The equipment of Ada corvettes for Ukraine has been announced: the Ministry of Defense has decided on RCC and SAM

Ukrainian corvettes Ada will have much wider opportunities, even compared to the base version

The Ministry of Defense has provided details of equipping Turkish Ada-class corvettes for the Ukrainian Navy, the first of which is to be built by 2023 .
In an interview with Defense Express, Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksandr Myronyuk spoke in detail about the choice of anti-ship missiles, air defense equipment, as well as a combat information and control system.

Ada corvettes for Ukraine provide for maximization of the use of anti-ship missiles. First of all, of course, it is our Ukrainian "Neptune" , but also American Harpoon, Turkish Atmaca , Norwegian Naval Strike Missile and other missiles that are currently being developed. The corvette is a ship that will serve for several decades. During this time, new RCCs will be developed that will have different characteristics and dimensions, so we do not limit ourselves to artificial frames in advance, "said Oleksandr Myronyuk.

Note that in Ada corvettes launchers of anti-ship cruise missiles are placed in 8 launchers of horizontal launch. Already in the Turkish project for its own Navy provided for the use of Harpoon and its own missile Atmaca, the launch of mass production of which is scheduled for this year .

Both of these rockets, like the R-360 "Neptune", have approximately the same dimensions: a length of 4.6-5.5 meters. At the same time, there is now a decrease in the size of subsonic inconspicuous RCC, for example, Naval Strike Missile, which is gradually becoming a bestseller on the market , shorter - 4 meters.

7a1602a687a2c11f.jpg

At the same time, the information about the dimensions of promising hypersonic missiles is now only approximate - 8-10 meters of rain at the Russian "Zircon", which has a vertical launch.

But in the United States, work has intensified on the creation of a hypersonic anti-ship missile as part of the Precision Strike Missile project, which should "fit" into the dimensions of the M142 HIMARS launch platform - about 4 meters.

Protection against air attack

launch of ship SAM
For ships, the availability of adequate air defense is one of the main parameters of efficiency

"As an anti-aircraft missile system, the possibility of installing a European MICA complex has now been considered. The manufacturer has confirmed its readiness to be delivered to Ukraine. It is a modern universal complex that is constantly evolving and adapted for use with corvette ships. Turkish corvettes, it has much more opportunities, "- said Alexander Myronyuk.

Note that MBDA's MICA SAM was specifically designed for small-tonnage ships, such as corvettes and near-sea frigates. It is installed on Gowind project frigates from the French Naval Group, the Dutch SIGMA 10514, Khareef from BAE Systems and others.

Frigate project SIGMA 10514
Frigate project SIGMA 10514
The capabilities of the ship's version of the MICA allow you to destroy targets at a range of up to 20 km, and at an altitude of up to 9 km. The speed and maneuverability of the missile is enough to destroy targets moving at speeds up to Mach 3, which allows you to intercept supersonic missiles. The complex is also designed to intercept cruise missiles that fly a few meters above the water.

8ad602a6a934538c.jpg

The capabilities of the American RIM-116 are much smaller - a range of up to 10 km, and a maximum target speed of up to 2 Mach.

There is an important difference in the means of aiming at the target, if the RIM-116 uses only its own infrared homing head, the MICA, in addition to this option, has a command flight scenario from the ship's radar station.

RIM-116 missile
RIM-116 missile
The start-up method also differs significantly. The RIM-116 uses a horizontal launcher, which significantly reduces the ability to fire at targets directly above the ship, forming a so-called "funnel", where enemy aircraft can operate with impunity.

In contrast, MICA has a vertical start, which eliminates this problem. It is also necessary to note the much higher energy of the rocket itself, as well as the better reaction rate of the complex.

MICA
MICA is developed in the version of the missile "air-to-air", "ground-to-air" and "sea-to-air"
By the way, the modified Ada project for Pakistan, which increased the tonnage from 2,400 to 3,000 tons and retrained it as a frigate, also replaced the RIM-116 with a vertical launch SAM. In this case, the launch shafts are located in the bow of the ship immediately behind the artillery installation.

Ada Pakistan
Frigate based corvette Ada for Pakistan. The number of cruise missiles has also been increased
Of course, if the Ukrainian defense complex develops a naval SAM with at least not less than MICA characteristics in the same dimensions, then, of course, we will be able to rearm these corvettes. However, now the only thing that can offer domestic "defense" is a short-range complex on the basis of MANPADS missiles with a range of up to 5 km, and an altitude of only 2.5-3.5 km, "- added the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine.

Combat system

combat information and control system
The combat information and control system is the "brain" and "nerve center" of the ship
"The situation is similar with the combat information and control system. Unfortunately, the domestic defense industry cannot offer a system that can exceed the capabilities of the Turkish GENESIS, which was created and developed under the state program for ten years. Therefore, it will remain on Ukrainian corvettes. without changes ", - Alexander Myronyuk emphasized

Note that the ship's combat information and control system is in fact its "brain center", which is responsible for controlling all weapons. Without its reliable and highly efficient operation, all anti-ship missiles, SAMs and other weapons become a "dead cargo".

It should also be noted that the Turkish GENESIS is already integrated into all NATO standards for communication and automatic command and control systems, including the tactical data exchange network Link 16.

"It was also decided to keep the original sensor systems, radar combat and radio reconnaissance of the ship. They will be the same as in the corvettes of the Turkish Navy. In the future, as in the case of SAM, the door for the national manufacturer - open. of which it should be ready at the level of 2023 - we have no right, "said Oleksandr Myronyuk.

Corvette Ada
Corvette Ada has advanced electronic equipment
The main radar of the Ada corvette is the SMART-S from Thales, which is licensed by the Turkish Aselsan. It allows you to detect air targets at a distance of up to 250 km, and inconspicuous aircraft at a distance of 50 km. The maximum number of accompanying targets is 500.

STING EO Mk2, also developed by Thales, was used as the radar of the fire control system. It operates in two bands, I- and K-band, which allows you to track complex targets such as inconspicuous missiles. It is also equipped with TV and thermal imaging cameras.

Corvette Ada
Equipping the basic version of the Ada class corvette
In addition, it operates as a radio reconnaissance station, enhancing the capabilities of Aselsan's RTR staff complex, dubbed ARES-2N.

The Ada corvettes are also equipped with the TBT-01 Yakamoz sonar system, REB station, anti-torpedo jamming system and other modern systems in accordance with NATO standards.

Corvette Ada
The first Ada-class corvette should be ready in 2023
Thus, the Ukrainian corvette will be much more efficient than its classmates in the Black Sea, even compared to the base version of Ada thanks to a more powerful SAM.

To understand, the Russian corvettes of the "Buyan-M" class and the 22160 project do not have adequate air defense at all , which allows even the Bayraktar TB2 strike UAV to "work" on them.

At the same time, the pre-established possibility of upgrading anti-ship missiles will allow these corvettes to maintain strike capabilities at the appropriate level throughout their service life. And also allows integration into their arsenal of cruise missiles to destroy ground targets.

No less important is the decision to leave unchanged the combat information and control system and sensors, in contrast to the rather long, without a 100% guarantee of success, the development of domestic counterparts.

However, as the Ministry of Defense has repeatedly emphasized, in the event of the appearance of domestic samples with better parameters, this issue will be resolved.

Neptune will need to be upgraded to be launched from a ship, they have sufficient time to work on that.
And to be honest CAMM sounds as a better (quad packable), and considering their cooperation with UK: unless Ukraine is willing to switch to MICA NG when it is leased and loadl Aster missiles to future frigates, correct me if i am wrong they have intended to have Aster on 58250 frigate but it wasn't leased in the past.

The Ukrainian Navy will start receiving new ships, boats and strike UAVs over the next few years

Ukraine's navy can indeed increase its combat capability dramatically in the coming years thanks to new Ada corvettes, British missile and American patrol boats and Bayraktar TB2 reconnaissance UAVs.
Plans indicating the timing of such an update were announced by President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky during ceremonial events on the occasion of the Day of the Navy of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.

In particular, it became known that the first Ada - class corvette for the Ukrainian Navy has already been laid at the Turkish shipyard. According to the previously announced plans, it is being built according to the 50/50 formula and will be completed in Ukraine. The readiness of the first ship is set at the end of 2023.

We will remind that earlier Defense Express exclusively reported about details of equipment of this corvette with the weapon and other systems.

It was also announced that the operators of Bayraktar TB2 strike reconnaissance UAVs are already completing training. As reported in February, the Navy will receive drones by the end of 2021 .

Bayraktar TB2

"We expect to receive modern and efficient Bayraktar TB2 UAVs soon. Ukrainian crews are already completing training in Turkey. Our Turkish friends are actively supporting the development of the Navy's fleet. year ", - the president of Ukraine reported.

As for American patrol boats, at least three upgraded in the US Island are expected to be received in the near future. Obviously we are talking about P192 "Sumy", P193 "Fastiv" and WPB-1336. In contrast to the previously received P190 "Slavyansk" and P191 "Starobilsk", which "came" without weapons, these three boats will receive American combat modules with automatic 30-mm guns.

Also called the date of receipt of boats Mark VI, but without specifying the number. However, it should be recalled that in March this year it was reported that two boats of this type were received as part of a package of assistance from the United States.

"It is expected that at least three more Island boats, which are being modernized in the United States, will be replenished. Next year, the American side will start handing over Mark VI boats," Volodymyr Zelensky said.

At the same time , no clear deadlines have been announced for the 8 units of British missile boats to be built on a $ 1.6 billion loan. As well as the deadline for receiving two Sandown minesweepers , which will be withdrawn from the Royal Navy of the United Kingdom and will be repaired and upgraded before being transferred to the Navy.

"The memorandum of cooperation between Ukraine and the United Kingdom signed in 2020 will be replenished with concrete measures. In the short term, our fleet will be replenished with minesweepers and modern missile boats," Zelensky said.

According to him, the infrastructure of the Ukrainian Navy is also being actively developed. We are talking about the Vostok base in Berdyansk on the Sea of Azov and the base of patrol boats on the Black Sea in the Pivdenny port.

Shipyard is surprising, looking forward to see.
Corvette production might have started in first week of April (according to a RfP file i have seen) in a private shipyard.
The shipyard might be a little surprising.
Turkish personnel will also be working in Ukraine for construction/assembly/integration in most of the jobs. System Integration of 1st and 2nd vessel will be carried out by Turkish personnel in Ukraine.
Dimensions are exactly same as Ada-Class, if the data on RfP is accurate or an estimation.
Contract is only made for the first ship so far.

Ukraine ended up having a better Navy than what they had back when Crimea is theirs. Good luck for Ukraine. Having a capable navy will ensure Ukraine will not be bullied and blockaded by the RU Black Sea Fleet.

That Russian occupation of Crimea and Donbass might turn into a huge own goal for Kremlin and a blessing for Ukraine in the long run.

If 10 years ago you were to said to someone in Moscow that Ukraine will one day be an enemy which is developing defense ties and common military projects with Turkey, UK or America against Russia... they would have probably thought that you are crazy. Yet Putin managed to insult a brother nation and turn it into an enemy. He took Crimea and parts of the East but lost the rest of Ukraine forever.

For Ukraine it is a very painful loss indeed but for many of the people of the country it was a shock that helped them see who the real enemy is. Now they can start rebuilding their state on a stronger basis with Western technologies and help.

  • Cost-effective modular platform
  • Data link capability and advanced combat management system will allow NATO ships to share info
  • SMART-S and ARES is one of the best in their class.
  • Similar class with Turkish Navy allows Ukraine to train sailors a lot faster
  • If issues in maintenance occur in Ukraine, ships can be brought to Turkey, some maintenance can be even done at sea

Turkey has started building the first MILGEM Ada-class corvette for the Ukrainian Navy, reports say.

Under the agreements signed in October and December of 2020, first of the corvettes would be built in Turkey while the rest are to be produced in Okean Shipyard.

In February, the parties decided that only hull of the first ship will be produced in Turkey and remaining construction will take place in Ukraine, according to local media.

In a speech to the Ukrainian Navy at Odessa region on Sunday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said,

“Our Turkish friends are actively supporting the development of the Ukrainian navy. The first foundation of our modern corvettes has already been laid in Turkey and will be completed in Ukraine by the end of 2023.”

The Ada-class corvette can carry out the determination, location, classification, identification and destruction of air, surface and underwater targets as well as provide naval gunfire support. In addition to avoiding any potential threats, corvettes can perform maritime operations such as maritime surveillance and patrols, coastal and infrastructure protection, and the supervision and surveillance of exclusive economic zones.

Aside of Ada battleships, Ukraine has also placed an order for additional Bayraktar TB2 drones. “We expect to receive modern and efficient Bayraktar UAVs soon. Ukrainian crews are already completing training in Turkey,” Zelensky said.

I would imagine some kind of pressure on the equipment and sensor part means the sensitive parts will be done in Ukraine.

In Turkey, steel has already been cut and sections are being formed for the Ukrainian Ada-class corvette .

The Military informs about it.

Sources in the Ministry of Defense said that the words of the Consul General of Ukraine in Istanbul were misinterpreted.

In Turkey, the celebrations are timed to the formation of the keel and therefore the cutting of steel and the formation of other sections is considered preparatory work.

Turkish shipbuilding has its own tradition and when laying the keel, special coins are installed, which are handed over to its commander when the ship is handed over and later stored in the museum.

Work for the Ukrainian corvette began in January 2021 and the formation of several sections has already been completed.

I am pretty sure it would not include Zorya engines. Ukraine does not have capability to integrate to modern warships. It would require substantial amount of resources to upgrade, modernize engines meanwhile delaying the project altogether. Such initiative has to be led by Turkey to make it possible.

I believe we would much prefer aeroderative TEI engines for naval gas turbine applications.

Also with national armor engine programs, we have gotten capabilities, infrastructure that did not existed before in Turkey. We can at least develop smaller engines for patrol craft,FIC in short time frame which is currently one of our top naval platform exports. We pay Germany billions of dollars per year. We can easily develop or modernize, upgrade Tulomsas engines for wider civilian applications.

What happened to this project?

Project launched before the Russian intervention. Project delayed and later halted because of the conflict. Ukraine was looking for solution providers to restart the project. Aselsan was one of the contenders to integrate systems to the corvette.

Lacking technical and technological background it has stalled.
2018-2019 They were nearing an agreement with STM et al. but the project was nearly "empty" that Turkish firms would end up designing from scratch + providing all know-how and ToT to Ukranians for almost cost of the consultancy (they were requesting a consultancy but in fact what they need was someone to realize their concept and provide the know-how so that they can continue) without even holding IP rights thus it couldn't succeed. All possible partners ended up offering them their own design since it was cheaper than a full consultancy.
They will eventually return to this project after Ada-Class and upgrade of their local shipyard with possible contribution from Turkey.

Consdidering fact that Turkey defence exports are increasing and that you have your own needs, are there plans for increasing capacities for vessels production?
Let me be clear and of somene can clarify, for example if Germany/Britain/France/ can produce lets say 5 bluewaters ships per year, how many Turkey can, if less what is needed to achieve that kind of capability?

Istanbul naval shipyard can build 2 hulls side by side
Izmir naval shipyard is about to join the band will take some portion of the production
Adik, SNR Istanbul shipyard, RMK can easily build Ada-Class like ships, and with some support even I-Class.
