I think this will lead to a revolution in housing.

Get rid of apartments and skyscrapers.

Embrace single storey houses.
The number of things that will change after the earthquake:

South Korea will send a second team of rescuers and emergency relief supplies to quake-hit Turkey on Thursday.

An additional group of 29 medical staff will follow within a week. The 29 medical staff are a part of 372 people who signed up for the medical treatment mission to Turkey.

Funny mistranslation in the article:
„Korea, a bloody ally and brother country of Turkey, should take the lead in helping the country overcome its sorrow,” President Yoon Suk Yeol was quoted …

Edit: Yoon’s delayed actions doesn‘t match his words. Previous Korean administration would’ve reacted swifter in disaster relief and sent help earlier.

Another real life story from my neck of the woods.

Our neighbors three-storey building in the heart of Malatya city did not collapse even though that property is over 40 years (!!!!) old!

It was built by his father who was known to pay attention for high quality building products and the right amount of materials like steel and cement during the construction. On top of that, he himself supervised the construction process.

Goes to show you how many lives we could have saved if only...

I saw a video where village guards were fighting with AFAD. The village guards saved someone under the rubble, just before they wanted to pull him out a group of AFAD workers came to replace them. The guards kicked and pushed them away.

I dont believe AFAD saved anyone. They are only there for show. The real saviours are the militairy, police, firemen, miners, village guards and international rescue teams.

Storeys should be limited. Anything thats high is already a potential killer.

Ridiculous how mix of buildings there is Turkiye you have good ones built and you have old ones while at the same time many paper built buildings that would collapse with 1 shake.

30,000 casualties in Turkiye while in Syria its 5000.

I dont know what to say. I was a young kid when the 1999 Earthquake happened eventhough I was in Australia ill never forget my Grandfather on phone for hours calling family and friends.

This natural disaster and the footage fcked me up just like 2004 Tsunami and the 2011 Tsunami in Japan.

Seeing footages of the destruction is terrifying.

I cannot imagine the ptsd the survivors and the rescue teams will go through. Its chilling and terrifying.

my brother goes to Aceh as volunteer a week after disaster, months later, back home he is already different man, i knew nothing about him anymore.

Announcement regarding the unfounded news that the Taiwanese team was removed during the search and rescue efforts in Adıyaman

The recent news shared in the press and social media in Türkiye regarding that Taiwanese rescue team was removed during the search and rescue efforts in Adıyaman, does NOT reflect the truth.

The common goal and first priority of everyone in the disaster fields is to "save lives". The Taiwanese search and rescue team has exerted all its efforts to conduct search and rescue works during operation period. Taiwanese rescue team has followed the cooperation with international coordination center and the request of local government so that the highest capacity of rescue efforts can be ensured.

Do village guards know how to handle a wounded with neck, head or spine injuries?

Rescuing is not just pulling someone out of the rubble like an ape, you rescue someone with tact and knowledge how to

The amount of fake news is astronomical tbh
What is hapoening is nothing more than a joke
I understand that the govt response hasnt been perfect but the sheer level of fake news aimed at inciting hatred, anger, fear, and despair just to gain more votes in the ballot box just proves to me how bad the opposition is. They are playing games with the lives of the ppl

What is even worse is that AKP assholes are doing the same thing as well. Just like how the opposition is playing propaganda, the AKP is doing the same thing and prioritizing media coverage over saving actual ppl in the earthquake just to mitigate the effect of AFAD initial screw-up and the fake news by opposition hired assholes

Shame on each and every politician from all sides of the political spectrum. This incident proved to me that the main problem isnt in laws or whatever but in the ppl themselves.

Looking forwards to who the opposition will pick for the election race. If it isnt Yavas, then Turkey will be screwed in every other way

General Directorate of Mapping started to update satellite images. I think they started in Kahramanmaraş.

Nurdağı district will be completely demolished and rebuilt in another area. If the ground in this district was in such a disastrous condition, why was construction allowed in this area for years?
Why are ppl allowed to build in Istanbul to this date?
Istanbul is located in an area that is more prone to more devastating earthquakes that may level around 25% of the Turkish population. Why are ppl building in Istanbul and not evacuating it to a more safe land?

All of Turkiye is earthquake prone.

So any region can be hit.

Fears of Istanbul being hit along with a tsunami.

If Istanbul gets hit with an earthquake and a tsunami the country will collapse because Istanbul is seen as the cultural and economic hub of the whole country.

Well Ataturk made Ankara the capital so the monopoly of Istanbul could be broken but nope all his successors instead of investing in the whole country were too busy simping for Istanbul. Treated Ankara like a mere government city nothing more.

Remember what Erdogan said losing Istanbul is like losing the whole country.

Even in the towns of a relatively less densely populated city like Kahramanmaras we cant that, how can they done this in Istanbul? People died and now we are moving the district. It will be the same in Istanbul. But more people will die.

Istanbul needs to expand and the population density should be re-settled as much as possible in risky neighborhoods such as Avcılar, Pendik, Tuzla, Kadıköy, Üsküdar, Fatih, Şişli, Küçükçekmece, Bakırköy, Beylikdüzü, Güngören, Maltepe, Zeytinburnu, which were subjected to very serious wild construction in the 80s and have old building stock. There are such neighborhoods, especially on the European side, where there are seas of concrete, consisting of endless adjacent apartment buildings along dozens of streets. The main threat in Istanbul is these contiguous buildings. In the event of a devastating earthquake, hundreds of streets will be inaccessible.

Although the fate of some neighborhoods in Istanbul is so obvious, rents have increased more than 5 times in the last 3 years and apartment prices have increased at least 5 times. Apartment prices are 6-10 million liras in apartment buildings that will almost collapse on their own. However, the zoning problem in these areas is very complicated. The buildings are already 6-7 floors, +10 floors in some districts of Kadıköy and Şişli, and the apartments are +100 square meters. Apartment dwellers cannot even agree among themselves, they do not want the square meters of their houses to decrease, if they have a penthouse, they do not want a middle floor. When they want to be given to the contractor in return for flats, sharing problems cannot be solving due to the zoning status. When the residents want to collect money among themselves and re-built, there are disagreements. Roughly speaking, the measure we have developed to renew our building stock against earthquakes is to increase the population density, and even this system is not fully functioning because of all the problems.

Years go by, years go by, until a new disaster strikes. You cannot empty Istanbul by making it unlivable for low and middle-income people. We have to face reality and everyone has to make sacrifices.

Heard otherwise from a friend who works on field in rescue operations since the 2nd day.

He can't be lying.

I will ask again whenever we can have a call. Some teams halted the works multiple time as they debated with officials, who insists on ground to be cleaned. They eventually returned back as volunteers talked and convinced them.
