On Thursday, the Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced the severing of diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates, giving the Emirati ambassador 48 hours to comply with the decision. Meanwhile, Abu Dhabi expressed hope that the decision would be "temporary," affirming its appreciation for its relations with all nations.
The Algerian Foreign Ministry stated: "After exhausting all avenues to preserve bilateral relations, the Algerian government decided today to sever diplomatic relations with the United Arab Emirates.
The ministry stated that the decision was prompted by what it described as "provocative or hostile actions" on the part of the UAE, noting that Algeria had exercised restraint and repeatedly warned of the potential consequences of such conduct. The statement added that Abu Dhabi persisted in these behaviors despite the warnings, deeming the situation no longer acceptable or tolerable within the framework of relations between two sovereign states.
" It added that "the UAE ambassador was received at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs headquarters on Thursday and formally notified of the decision's content," noting that "he was informed he had been granted a 48-hour deadline to comply with the decision.
" Subsequently, the Algerian Ministry of Defense announced in a statement that the country would close its airspace—effective midnight on September 11, 2026—to all civil and military aircraft registered in the UAE, with the exception of Emirati commercial flights to and from Houari Boumediene International Airport until the end of 2026, when the contract expires.
