Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi Riaz Hamidullah arrived in Dhaka on Monday night following an urgent call from the foreign ministry amid recent tensions in bilateral relations with India.

A responsible source at the ministry confirmed the development.

Diplomatic sources said the decision to call the High Commissioner back was taken to hold detailed discussions on the ongoing diplomatic strain and recent developments between Dhaka and New Delhi.

For nearly the past two weeks, relations between Bangladesh and India have remained strained. Bangladesh has accused various quarters in India of spreading misleading and exaggerated information regarding the condition of minority communities in Bangladesh. As a result, Hindutva groups staged protests targeting Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in India.

Due to security concerns, Bangladesh was forced to temporarily suspend visa services at those missions. In this context, on December 23, the two countries, for the first time in their diplomatic history, summoned each other’s High Commissioners in a tit-for-tat move.

Meanwhile, on Friday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal alleged at a regular press briefing that there had been “2,900 incidents of violence” against minorities in Bangladesh.

Responding to the remarks, Bangladesh Foreign Ministry spokesperson SM Mahbubul Alam, in a statement on Sunday, rejected the allegation as motivated and baseless.

He also urged various quarters in India to refrain from spreading misleading narratives and propaganda regarding the situation of minority communities in Bangladesh.

Islamist bad!! Pakistan bad!! Muslim bad!! Islam bad!! Madrasa bad!! Secret meeting good!! 🤡

As New Delhi seeks to engage parties that could form the next government, Rahman confirmed meeting an Indian diplomat earlier this year after his bypass surgery. Unlike diplomats from other countries who made open courtesy visits to him, the Indian official asked that the meeting remain confidential, Rahman said.

"Why? There are so many diplomats who visited me and it was made public. Where is the problem?" Rahman said. "So we must become open to all and open to each other. There is no alternative to develop our relationship."

India's foreign ministry did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Rahman's statement about the meeting or any request for it to be confidential.

An Indian government source confirmed contacts with various parties, and India's foreign minister visited Dhaka on Wednesday to offer condolences to the family of BNP chief and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia, who died on Tuesday.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has directed Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from their squad ahead of the upcoming season, citing “recent developments.”

The board has also allowed the franchise to sign a replacement player.

BCCI Secretary Debjit Saikia confirmed the decision on Friday while speaking to Indian news agency ANI in Guwahati.

“In view of the recent incidents, the BCCI has directed the KKR franchise to release Bangladesh player Mustafizur Rahman from their team,” Saikia said.

“The BCCI has also said that if the franchise wants to change the player, permission will be granted in accordance with IPL rules.”

Following the directive, Kolkata Knight Riders issued an official statement confirming Mustafizur’s release.

“Kolkata Knight Riders confirms that BCCI/IPL as the regulator of IPL has instructed it to release Mustafizur Rahman from the squad ahead of the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) season,” the franchise said.

“The release has been carried out following due process and consultations, upon the instruction of the Board of Control of Cricket in India,” it added.

Mustafizur Rahman was bought by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs9.2 crore at the most recent IPL auction.

The upcoming season was set to be his sixth stint in the tournament.

Over the course of eight IPL seasons, the left-arm pacer has represented five different franchises and has taken a total of 65 wickets.

The BCCI has not provided further details on the specific circumstances that led to the decision.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has drawn a firm line over security, deciding that the national team will not play its T20 World Cup matches in India and will instead seek a venue shift to Sri Lanka from the ICC.

The decision came at an emergency virtual meeting of BCB directors on Sunday, following a sharp escalation in tensions following an Indian cricket board decision asking the IPL franchise Kolkata Knight Riders to release Mustafizur Rahman.

Nazmul Abedeen, head of the board’s cricket operations department, told bdnews24.com: “We do not want to say anything separately at this moment. A detailed press statement will be issued very soon.”

The decision was publicly confirmed at 3:20pm by Sports Advisor Asif Nazrul in a social media post.

“Bangladesh will not go to India to play the World Cup. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has taken this decision today. I welcome this decision taken in the context of the aggressive communal policies of the Indian cricket board,” he wrote.

BCB directors had also discussed the issue the previous night. At that stage, the board had opted for a cautious approach, deciding to write to the ICC seeking clarification on security arrangements, with most directors reluctant to adopt a hard line or demand a change of venue.

However, sources said the board’s stance shifted decisively after the government signalled a sterner position on the matter.

Mustafizur had been bought for 92 million rupees, but the franchise dropped him following a directive from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Indian cricket board Secretary Devajit Saikia said the decision was taken in view of “recent developments”. The franchise later formally released Mustafizur.

The episode prompted fresh questions over the safety and treatment of the Bangladesh national team should it travel to India for the World Cup.

In a subsequent social media post, the sports advisor said: “I have instructed the board to inform the ICC that if a contracted Bangladeshi cricketer cannot play in India, then the Bangladesh national team cannot consider it safe to travel there for the World Cup. I have also directed the board to request that Bangladesh’s World Cup matches be held in Sri Lanka.”

BCB directors had initially agreed that their letter to the ICC would stop short of demanding a venue change, taking into account broader diplomatic and cricketing considerations. That position was later revised following direct government intervention.

Earlier on Sunday, the BCB announced a 15-member squad for the T20 World Cup at around 12:30pm.

The decision places Bangladesh alongside Pakistan, who will also not play their World Cup matches in India. Last year, India declined to travel to Pakistan for the Champions Trophy and earlier skipped touring the country for the Asia Cup, resulting in Pakistan’s matches being scheduled in co-host Sri Lanka.

The ministry of information and broadcasting of Bangladesh on Monday ordered the television channels to shut down the broadcasting of the Indian Premier League after Mustafizur Rahman was released by Kolkata Knight Riders.

‘It’s come to attention that the star player of Bangladesh, Mr Mustafizur Rahman, was snubbed from the Kolkata Knight Riders team to play in the upcoming Indian Premier League, which commences on March 26, 2026, by the Indian Cricket Board. There is no rational cause behind such a decision of the Indian Cricket Board, and such a decision has hurt, disappointed, and aggrieved the people of Bangladesh,’ the ministry said in a directive published on Monday.

‘In such circumstances, broadcasting of all games of the Indian Premier League and programmes are hereby to be shut down until further notice,’ it added.

The directive comes after the adviser for the ministry of youth and sports, Asif Nazrul, earlier said that he had requested the information and broadcasting ministry to shut down the broadcasting of the upcoming IPL that starts on March 26.

Later on Sunday, the information adviser Syeda Rizwana Hasan said any decision on whether to stop broadcasting IPL in Bangladesh would be taken after reviewing the legal basis and thoroughly examining the relevant procedures.

Mustafiz’s release from the Kolkata Knight Riders, who were ‘advised’ by the Board of Control for Cricket in India, sparked outward repercussions.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board has already said that they won’t travel to India for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. They have also requested the ICC to relocate their matches outside India.

The Bangladesh national team were supposed to play all four of their group matches in India—the first three at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata, followed by a match at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

ICC to Bangladesh : Play in India or forfeit points

As it is, it’s not as if Bangladesh is going to win anything of note - may beat Italy at most and has a chance against Nepal. Would be better for the sport of cricket, if Bangladesh doesn’t play and is replaced by 2 time winner West Indies
They are grossly overestimating the power they have with ICCI. Pakistanis were able to change their venue because of the revenue that would have been lost if india pak matches didnt take place. Bangladesh on the other has no such trump card. For a people who are hell bent on boycotting india they got salty because of an IPL snub.

It is an utter disgrace that India has dragged petty politics into the game of cricket. Turning a sport meant to unite people into a platform for political hostility reflects a disturbing lack of maturity and sportsmanship. Such behavior exposes how deeply intolerance has been normalized among certain sections, bringing embarrassment not only to the game but to those who justify this conduct. ,

Once again, the mannerisms of many Indians have been on full display: spreading unverified claims and circulating false information without the slightest effort to confirm the facts. This reckless approach to discourse only undermines credibility and exposes a troubling disregard for truth.

Umm. My source was ESPNcricinfo. Your source was a twitter account. I wonder which any rational mind would consider a better source for news.

Agreed to your point - there was no need to throw the sole Bangladeshi in the IPL out of the competition to please some andhbhakts. And that too only because the owner is Shahrukh Khan - a favorite target of the bhakt brigade. Bangladeshis playing for the MI franchise overseas in non IPL leagues don’t draw flak. It’s hypocritical.
