Bangladesh High Commissioner in New Delhi Riaz Hamidullah arrived in Dhaka on Monday night following an urgent call from the foreign ministry amid recent tensions in bilateral relations with India.
A responsible source at the ministry confirmed the development.
Diplomatic sources said the decision to call the High Commissioner back was taken to hold detailed discussions on the ongoing diplomatic strain and recent developments between Dhaka and New Delhi.
For nearly the past two weeks, relations between Bangladesh and India have remained strained. Bangladesh has accused various quarters in India of spreading misleading and exaggerated information regarding the condition of minority communities in Bangladesh. As a result, Hindutva groups staged protests targeting Bangladesh’s diplomatic missions in India.
Due to security concerns, Bangladesh was forced to temporarily suspend visa services at those missions. In this context, on December 23, the two countries, for the first time in their diplomatic history, summoned each other’s High Commissioners in a tit-for-tat move.
Meanwhile, on Friday, Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal alleged at a regular press briefing that there had been “2,900 incidents of violence” against minorities in Bangladesh.
Responding to the remarks, Bangladesh Foreign Ministry spokesperson SM Mahbubul Alam, in a statement on Sunday, rejected the allegation as motivated and baseless.
He also urged various quarters in India to refrain from spreading misleading narratives and propaganda regarding the situation of minority communities in Bangladesh.
