Foreign Minister Dr AK Abdul Momen has urged the United States to invest in the country's blue economy saying it would enable simultaneously to have a stake in the Indo-pacific region.

"Join our blue economy, do activities there (Bay of Bengal) . . . and later you can monitor Indo-Pacific from there (Bay of Bengal)," he told a media briefing a day after an interaction with a group of US lawmakers in Washington DC on Tuesday.

Bangladesh and the US share similar visions for the free, open, connected, prosperous, secure and resilient Indo-Pacific region.

Earlier, the US ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas said the US would work with Bangladesh and other partner in the Indo-Pacific region so that the region cannot be taken for granted while the region's seas and skies are governed and used according to international law.

Bangladesh foreign minister, who is now in Washington to join celebration of 50 years anniversary of establishing diplomatic ties between Dhaka and Washington, termed his US visit as "very useful".

"I have seen upbeat mode of all the US lawmakers and administrators regarding Bangladesh," he said adding that he is very happy about the outcomes of his visit.

He said the visit is successful as "he reached out" to the US side with true and positive facts and figures of Bangladesh.

During his meeting with US lawmakers, the foreign minister also demanded repatriation of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman's convicted killer Rashed Chowdhury who is now residing in the US.

The foreign minister also informed about the Bangladesh democratic process and newly formed election commission.

The foreign minister also urged more US investment in Bangladesh especially in the pharmaceuticals sector as the US can provide medicine to its people in more affordable price.

"I told them (lawmakers), now it is time for the USA to involve more with investment in Bangladesh," Dr Momen said.

It depends buddy, as Indians we are not that afraid of their sanctions anyway
The new standard issue rifle of indian army will be ak 203. Factory has been setup and other stuff has been completed , production should begin shortly
Rather we cancelled the deal to purchase additional sig 716 g2 rifles from USA after army found its performance unsatisfactory.
By the way , does bangaldesh manufactures all types of small arms ammo ?
Tyats the main reason , we cancelled further sig orders , our 7m62 ×51 mm ammo was too powerful for the sig 716, thus amrikis wanted to sell us ammo too , they don't earn by selling guns , they earn by selling ammo to you .
We have been making this type of ammo since 60s itself.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will assist Bangladesh's Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in recovering money laundered in the USA and Canada.

FBI officials made the remarks on Saturday (21 May) during a three-day training on "Protecting Public Integrity: Investigating and Prosecuting Complex Corruption Cases", arranged by the US Embassy to enhance the skills of ACC investigators against money laundering.

A total of 20 investigation officers of the ACC took part in the training which started on 19 May.

An ACC official, who took part in the training, said as an outcome of this assistance, the ACC could form a joint investigation team with the FBI in cases of complex corruption.

"In such cases, the FBI will assist in recovering and freezing money laundered illegally in the US and Canada and send the relevant documents to the ACC. On the basis of requests for mutual legal assistance, they will help the ACC from there and send the information quickly," he added.

The United States has said they look forward to continuing to exchange views with Bangladesh on the newly launched Indo-Pacific Economic Framework (IPEF).

"Bangladesh is an important regional partner of the United States," acting US Embassy Spokesperson Bryan Schiller told media on Monday.

Schiller said they have been in contact with Bangladesh about the IPEF since the Partnership Dialogue in March and at regular intervals in Dhaka and Washington.

The US seeks to address the 21st century economic challenges, including the digital economy, clean energy transition, and supply chain resiliency.

US President Joe Biden on Monday launched a new trade deal with 12 Indo-Pacific nations aimed at strengthening their economies as he warned Americans worried about high inflation that it was "going to be a haul" before they feel relief, reports AP.

The president said he does not believe an economic recession is inevitable in the US.

Biden, speaking at a news conference after holding talks with Japan's Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, acknowledged the US economy has "problems" but said they were "less consequential than the rest of the world has."

The comments came just before Biden's launch of the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework, a new trade deal his administration designed to signal US dedication to the contested economic sphere and to address the need for stability in commerce after disruptions caused by the pandemic and Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Nations joining the US in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework are Australia, Brunei, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. Along with the United States, they represent 40% of world GDP.

The countries said in a joint statement that the pact will help them collectively "prepare our economies for the future" following disruptions caused by the coronavirus pandemic and the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The US Fulbright Program, which had been suspended following the Holey Artisan Bakery attack in 2016 – has resumed for Bangladeshi students after six years.

US Ambassador to Bangladesh, Peter Haas, announced the resumption of the programme in partnership with Brac University on its campus on Wednesday.

He also launched the "Academy for Women Entrepreneurs (AWE)", a Department of State global initiative to promote gender equality and equity for the first time in Bangladesh.

The goal of AWE is to promote small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and foster local women entrepreneurs, especially those from underprivileged backgrounds.

The Fulbright program is one of the United States' flagship exchange programmes that strengthens and expands people-to-people ties and educational linkages between the United States and Bangladesh.

With more than 4,000 State Department Exchange programme alumni, including 650 Bangladeshis who travelled to the United States under the Fulbright exchange programmes and more than 250 Americans who have conducted research and/or taught in Bangladesh, the US Embassy in Dhaka continues to fulfil its commitments toward ensuring quality education in Bangladesh by offering academic and professional development opportunities for students, teachers, and scholars, the embassy said.

The Women Empowerment Center of Brac University's Business School (BBS) is hosting Dr Sharon Hart, the first Fulbright Specialist to help develop a curriculum for women entrepreneurship and leadership training, design research questions on gender and women economic empowerment issues, and to build capacity to conduct workshops for researchers and BBS faculty members.

The resumption of the US Fulbright program is yet another significant effort of the US Embassy in Dhaka as it continues to celebrate the 50th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the United States and Bangladesh, the embassy said.

Chairperson of Board of Trustees of Brac University, Tamara Hasan Abed, Vice-Chancellor of Brac University, Professor Vincent Chang, US Fulbright specialist Dr Sharon Hart, and Senior Technology Adviser of CED at Brac University, Professor Dr Matin Saad Abdullah, spoke at the function, among others.

Dean of Brac Business School at Brac University, Professor Dr Sang H Lee, gave the welcome speech while Associate Dean of Brac Business School at Brac University, Professor Dr Mohammad Mojibul Haque, gave the vote of thanks.

Officials from the Ministry of Education, University Grants Commission (UGC), established and budding entrepreneurs, and prominent public and private sector business professionals also joined the celebration, the US embassy said.
