Professor Roberto Cingolani, CEO of the Italian aerospace, defense, and security company Leonardo S.p.A, along with his accompanying delegation, visited the Özdemir Bayraktar National Technology Center.

In Piaggio's stalled UCAV project, Leonardo was the project partner and the most important system supplier. I think this should not be an ordinary visit, but a meeting to discuss possible cooperation. If Leonardo and Baykar came together, they could meet the armed and special purpose UAV needs of the entire EU.

I like that they all wear "bayraktar tb3" suit in last photo :). Something must be brewing

Jokes aside, Baykar&Leonardo cooperation would be an excellent thing.

TB-3 is almost a tailor-made solution for Trieste and Cavour. While some Europeans tend to make this pride issue, the Italians are now taking a more pragmatic stance and it seems they are sincere about strengthening defense cooperation, which will inevitably produce positive results in favor of Italy.

In general, I believe that rapprochement with Spain and Italy and the perceptions that are drawn around common interests are important, because I think that politically this will contribute greatly to peace in the region. Spain, Italy and Turkiye are the 3 major powers of the Mediterranean, historically and culturally. Together, these three countries can maintain regional security without the need for a US or any other external presence.

It is also a counterweight in the Mediterranean to France, Greece/Cyprus and Egypt. Neither Spain nor Italy want or tolerate France having or gaining too much power in the Mediterranean through its proxies such as Greece/Cyprus & Egypt. That is why they support Turkey pragmatically, e.g. through armaments cooperation or other Support Projects such as Navantia & Co and Leonardo with Italy in the near future.

At the same time, Turkey is creating ties both in regular bilateral trade between the countries and their defense industries. This leaves France and Greece almost isolated and alone in EU politics. As both demand a much tougher stance on Turkey but are not supported by the majority of the EU.
Several EU countries share France's views on certain issues against Turkey, but the economic and migration technical factor prevents them from wanting to isolate Turkey.
The damage would be much higher for the countries concerned than they would help, because they now also know that Turkey is increasingly diversifying its trade outside the EU.

It seems Baykar has big ambitions in Italy.

BAYKAR CTO Selcuk Bayraktar: With the sale of Piaggio Aerospace to Baykar, our -manned- aerial vehicle activities in Europe will begin.

***

Manned and unmanned aircraft of various classes, both civilian and military, in parallel with a business plan that extends to global positioning service, orbital transfer service in the short term; satellite launch system in the medium term, extend to additive manufacturing in space in the longer term... On the military side, a range of activities covering cruise missiles, smart munitions and sub-cloud loitering systems... in more detail, a pioneering effort to localize a range of critical technologies on autonomy and deep learning, leading to a unique artificial intelligence language model studies... Expanding industrial collaborations, acquisitions and subsidiaries, production and engineering campuses in many countries...

This is a critical decade for Baykar, and if it can successfully pass through this process, it is inevitable that it will become Europe's aerospace giant.

Urso, 'Piaggio Aerospace will produce drones for the European market'

"The guarantees that the Turkish company Baykar gave on the acquisition of Piaggio Aerospace were so satisfactory that they obtained the consent of the unions. The company not only intends to maintain the core business of Piaggio Aerospace, including maintenance and components in the area, but also to develop the new asset of the production of drones for the European market".

Thus the Minister of Enterprise and Made in Italy Adolfo Urso, during a visit to the Piaggio Aerospace plant in Villanova d'Albenga (Savona), confirmed the objective of introducing a new production line of military drones in the historic aeronautical industry.

"This good news of the best possible conclusion of such a significant dispute comes just as the European Union announces its intention to separate, as the Meloni Government has always requested, Defense investments from the calculation of the Stability Pact," Urso emphasized, "this means that Italy and the other countries of the European Union will be able to invest more and better for the defense of our continent."

They bought Piaggio for just under 100mil!
A juicy bargain!
Sometimes these big companies can be bought for even a penny. But they come with a lot of baggage.
There is no such thing as “free lunch” in business.

1. They may be heavily laden with debt.
2. Workforce redundancy monies could be horrifically high.
3. Order book may be low, sometimes non existent.
4. Responsibilities to government can be back breaking.
5. Only reason company may be solvent could be because of government subsidies.

We don’t know what the situation with Piaggio was. But Iam sure Baykar mast have weighed the pluses and minuses carefully before jumping in to bed with them.
Piaggio’s in book turnover was 152 million Euros. In their latest (2024) financial reports the net worth of company was put at 430 million Euros. So there must have been few negatives we do not know about that offset the value for which Baykar took onboard and gave guarantees.

Whatever the situation was, the bottom line is that Baykar has a foot in a major western aerospace company. If utilised correctly it can be very advantageous. Their engine part manufacturing side alone, is worth more than what they paid for the whole company; Not counting the market opportunities the new company can open for Baykar.

Of course this is a marriage made in heaven for Piaggio too. Because of the synergies of the two companies, even if Baykar’s offer were lower than other competitors, Italian government had to choose Baykar.
