Development of this system has been subsidized by Indian taxpayers. But again this system and it’s iterations have been in production for 20+ years bringing down costs. Every year we spend thousands of projectiles in exercises and order more or less the same to replace them and induct advanced versions.

First thing that will happen is that Turkey will sniff out the radar signature, find a solution to jam it and export the know how to Azerbaijan, China and Pakistan. And when Turkish drones start neutralising Indian radars, it will be a real headache for your marketing teams.

Swathi weapon locating radar have been deployed against both Pakistan and china so if they really want to find a solution to jam it they will better do it on their own.

It looks like the Armenians are still applying the same old school, Soviet-era strategies that led to their decisive defeat.

2 ways to look about it. Armenia did ask for weapons AD missiles and To be delivered immediately which india mighty have said no to divert it from their stocks. India is already on standoff with china and Pakistan and can’t spare existing spare.

MBRL we have quite a lot and few to spare and Armenia thought of this as a chance to get some systems cheap to expend. It’s not game changing system. You fire them before an operation to flatten that landscape. It’s also possible they needed also this and AD system badly and decided to get MBRL at this point. It’s driven by Armenian military decisions based on their requirement.

I believe Swathi is already in Armenia. But I believe we were asked to fastrack it during the last war and I believe it was delivered immediately after the war.

It's a good way to milk Armenia, but I'm not sure if it's the right theater from a marketing standpoint. Besides the political and economic superiority, the geographical superiority also passed to Azerbaijan. Technical and tactical domination is at its peak. What I'm talking about here is not just inventory, I'm talking about force abilities and training level starting from the troop level to each element. If Armenia is again encouraged for war by its supporters, you will end up with nothing more than plenty amounts of UAV footage about newcomer systems falling apart, which not paid yet.

Milking is a strong term. It’s the Armenians which have the requirement and maybe they do. It’s not like India offered an loan and forced them to buy this equipment. I believe it’s also driven by short delivery timeline

Pinaka MLRS system​

New Delhi: Armenia has signed a contract with India for procuring the indigenous Pinaka multi-barrel rocket launchers, unspecified missiles and ammunition, amid its growing tensions with Azerbaijan which is close to Turkey and Pakistan.

On Wednesday, Armenia and Azerbaijan accused each other of violating a cease-fire agreement that ended two days of conflict this month.

Sources in the defence and security establishment confirmed that the government-to-government contract, valued at about Rs 2,000 crore ($244.9 million), was signed earlier this month and that the supplies would be fast tracked as per the requirement.

While the exact quantity is not known, the order includes the indigenous Pinaka system, ammunition and anti-tank rockets. This is the first international order for the system, which was developed by the Defence Research and Development organisation (DRDO). The multiple rocket launcher saw action with the Indian Army in the 1999 Kargil War and is currently deployed along the borders with China and Pakistan.

The defence sources remained tight-lipped about the exact nature of the government-to-government contract but pointed out that Armenia has bought Indian defence goods in the past.

The ex-Soviet republic had bought four indigenous Swathi weapons locating radar in 2020 from India which was delivered in the backdrop of its conflict with Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan-Turkey-Pakistan axis ​

Azerbaijan is seen by many as part of an emerging axis with Turkey and Pakistan. It has used Turkish drones to fight war against Armenia, and is also in talks with Pakistan to buy the JF-17 fighter aircraft.

Observers have pointed out that in recent years, despite their physical distance, an “indirect linkage” has emerged between Armenia-Azerbaijan and India-Pakistan.
In 2017, Turkey, Azerbaijan, and Pakistan had signed a Trilateral Ministers Agreement that established security cooperation, and built upon previous bilateral military aid arrangements. Besides the strategic importance of the deal with Armenia, the export order is a boost for the indigenous defence industry with the Indian government keen to increase the value of Indian arms exports.

India’s defence exports touched a record Rs 13,000 crore ($1.6 billion) in the 2021-2022 fiscal, “eight times” of what it was around five years ago.

Swathi weapon-locating radar​

In 2020, the Narendra Modi government had set a target of Rs 35,000 crore ($ 5 billion) export in aerospace, and defence goods and services in the next five years. This is part of the turnover of Rs 1.75 lakh crore ($ 25 billion) in defence manufacturing by 2025 that the government is aiming to achieve.

In January, India had signed a contract with the Philippines for the sale of BrahMos missiles.

Currently, India exports defence equipment to 75 countries and this includes weapon simulators, tear gas launcher, torpedo loading mechanism, alarm monitoring & control, night vision monocular & binocular, light-weight torpedo & fire control systems, armoured protection vehicle, weapons locating radar, high-frequency radio, coastal surveillance radar among others.

First Pinaka export: Private companies to lead from front​

India's first export of the indigenous Pinaka multi barrel rocket launchers (MBRL) will see private sector companies leading from the front, with the bulk of the order to be executed by industry partners that have established production facilities and supply chains for quick deliveries.

Armenia, which has placed orders for four Pinaka batteries (two to be delivered first and an equal additional order later), will also get a range of new extended range rockets being developed for the Indian Army as well as guided rockets in the near future. Interest for the indigenous system has also come from nations in West Asia as well as Southeast Asian militaries that are looking to increase firepower.

Private sector companies that partnered with the Defence Research and Development Organisation - Larsen & Toubro, Tata Defence and Economic Explosives Limited - have set up production lines for the Pinaka system that are being supplied in bulk to the armed forces. The companies are already executing orders for six regiments of the Pinaka for the army, to add to the four regiments that are already in service. As part of larger artillery modernisation plans, the army has a requirement of 22 regiments of the MBRLs.

The six Pinaka regiments on order by the army include 114 launchers with automated gun aiming and positioning system and 45 command posts and the project has more than 70% indigenous content. The running order places the Indian companies in a good place to execute fast deliveries of the Pinaka system to Armenia, supplies of which could commence within a year.

Basic knowledge about RF would say whatever you say cannot be conjured within a short period of time. Are you going to have radar jammers for every bandwidth? If what you say is true, it should be easy to equip 2G phones with 5G technology. Guess what it is not. You just need a basic spectrum analyzer with an antenna to sniff out the signature. It’s not exactly secret.


Secondly every system can be neutralized. The question is , if it’s worth the investment to have an counter system for every thing? Weapon locating radar tracks the incoming projectile and derives approximately where the artillery might be located. It does not fire weapons nor lock onto anything. Best way to counter it is shoot and scoop.

The Problem is swathi is an old pesa technology. And has considerably shorter range compared to its modern couterparts. Only 40/50 km compared 100km of cobra, STR and others . And also, you don't need any radar's all signatures to be stored previously in a digital memory in order to perform an effective jamming. Modern ECMs like koral and others can perform huge real time data analysis and has massive processing capability.

Larsen & Toubro (L&T) has secured a contract to deliver 40 mm naval gun systems to the Indonesian Navy, which marks the first-ever export of the weapon system from India to Indonesia.

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, two sources at the Indo Defence 2022 exhibition, being held in Jakarta, from 2 to 5 November, have confirmed with Janes that L&T will supply the company's Teevra 40 system and the weapon will go onboard one of the Indonesian Navy's Teluk Bintuni-class landing ships.

A contract for the weapons was signed with the Indonesian Navy on 14 October 2022, and it covers the delivery of two Teevra 40 units. L&T will work with Indonesian defence firm BTI Defence on the contract, and the latter will provide after-sales service for the weapon system while it is operational.

The sources are not able to name the exact ship that will receive these weapon systems.

The Teevra 40 is a naval gun system that has a maximum range of about 11,800 m. For surface targets, it has an effective range of about 3,500 m while for aerial targets, the effective range is about 4,500 m. It can fire various 40 mm/L70 standard NATO rounds.

The weapon features five firing modes, namely, the single-shot mode, the full auto mode, the three-shot burst, and the five-shot burst. In addition, the system also has a warning shot mode, which keeps the gun's targeting cross-hairs on the objective but firing projectiles away at a predetermined safe distance.

The current order is to supply 2 units of these guns to one of the Teluk Bintuni-class. It seems like Indo navy has 9 ships of this class with another 3 in construction. I see a possibility to integrate this gun across the entire class if the performance is satisfactory

Indian AF is also ordering 244 guns but a land based version. IA might also follow suit and choose the same. The initial RFP from IA is out and they are looking for 220 guns which will be followed by a larger request to meet the total requirement of about 938 guns

In a major success for Indian firm KalyStrategic Systems Limited on Wednesday announced receiving an order worth USD 155 million for supplying howitzers.

However, the Baba Kalyani-owned company did not disclose the buyer except for clarifying that it was in a non-conflict zone.

"We are pleased to inform that Kalyani Strategic Systems Limited, a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Company, has been awarded an export order for a 155mm Artillery Gun platform to be executed over a 3-year timeframe. The total value of the order is USD 155.50 million," the company said in a statement.

"This order, to a non-conflict zone, is a great testament to the Indian government's Aatmanirbhar Bharat agenda and its sustained push to promote exports of Indigenously Designed Developed and Manufactured (IDDM) advanced defense platforms from India," it said.

Kalyani is one of the major investors in the defense sector and has been offering a number of weapon systems to India as well as foreign countries.

The company has been working with Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) to develop the advanced tower artillery gun system (ATAGS) and has also developed an ultra-light howitzer.

The Prime Minister has also urged the defence industry to develop its products for the global market and achieve USD 5 billion targets by 2025

Great news. Much greater than Pinaka export. Cos even though Indian army has finished evaluation of atleast one of Kalyani products, the final order is still being awaited by CCS.
And here they have a product which has cleared the foreign country’s testing requirements even before it has compeleted Indian armed forces testing. Their product, research and testing regimen has matured.

The pinaka system on the other hand has been in production for nearly 2 decades.
