i did say that and firmly stand beside that statement, sorry state that had 5 military coups in couple of decades can not be described other then that. beside that
compare your influence in the world at time with today projection and good vibes around the globe. bright moments in past like cyprus operation do not change overall weakness and irrelevance on world stage, today you are respected or hated around the globe, clear sign of increasing relevance.

Turkey wasn't hated back then because it was a vital ally against the Soviet Union. With no common threat, Turkey can now focus on its own goals. Some of these clash with US interests, hence why we are so disliked.

One thing which is crucial to explain is that Turkey was at its weakest during the time of the Ergenekon trials. Once the military staff won, that's when Turkey started regaining power.

Once FETO lost that's when the shackles were removed. Let's not forget that up until FETO completely lost control, we couldn't even launch an operation against ISIS and YPG.

Hence the term banana republic could be fitting...

Everyone has (a lame) excuse for the problems Turkey was and is facing. But the fact is that Turkish politics under-performed grossly pre-2002.

Did someone say this?

My answer to this is that if Turkey was a banana republic before Erdoğan then how did it capture northern Cyprus? Or how did it make both Syria and Greece buckle after threatening war?

In the period before Erdoğan, Turkey was still in the process of building up its defence industry. It takes decades to create a strong defence industry. By the 90s we were producing Kobra's and J-600Ts. Erdoğan has been ruling for the past 20 years, it's only natural that the defence industry has exponentially expanded under his rule as it has passed major milestones and will continue to. This is simply a logical progression. Let's not forget that TFX, Altay, Atak and other major projects have been in the pipeline since the 90s. But we didn't have the expertise to create them back then.

We certainly weren't a banana republic in the 70s. 80s or 90s. On the contrary, we did very well against a combined PKK and Islamist extremist threat which could've torn us apart. At the same time, we laid the foundations for a highly successful defence industry.

Turkey has not been a "Banana republic" ever since Ataturk founded the modern republic....and made a very clear cut well established secular, progressive and nationalist basis for the country....after kicking out the foreign armies circling like sharks at the time.

Some people don't get how bad things can be....they take too many things for granted that Ataturk did. Those things do not come easy at all to then say its banana republic because you dont have some demagogue to your particular preference downstream.

i appreciate your balanced angle, i truly think that your country faces so many challenges on so many levels domestically and abroad that this palace thing is minor and irrelevant issue and only used as convinient tool for achieving some cheap political points. at least this forum community should be above that.

First office of Merkel, second the office of the fucking major of Diyarbakir that was appointed by the government.

You don’t understand a thing from diplomacy! And what if Merkel visits the office of the Mayor of Diyarbakır?

First she will think: WOW, look how wealthy and strong these Turks are if even in Diyarbakir (the ass crack of Geography) the mayor has a more luxurious office than me... 😕

Second she will think: I am so jealous...

Third: I am afraid so I better do what Turkey wants... 🙈

You just can’t understand the level of thinking of the GREATER MINDS. 🤷🏻‍♂️

The Dutch PM handed in his signature on a bike last week and if I would tell the AKPians for what relative minor thing he did it, their heads would explode.

Sure, like there is no need for security protocols in turkey and officials can go carelessly on their bykes to their officies. If you would like to be like holland and make comparato, eradicate islam, give full lgbt rights, give kurds all they ask, legalize prostitution and drugs, invent some new forms of advanced human rights and so on, i am sure in next 20 years your president will go on job riding bycycle and wawing to pedestrians in that imagined utopia.
Always astonished with this kind mixing of apples and pears.

At the end of the day, politicians create the situation for themselves. If you starve people and build palaces instead of ensuring better terms for the people. You’d have hard time walking on the streets.

Economically and technologically yes.

But politically and militarily, Turkiye is much stronger. German army has no capability in doing the kind of operations Turkiye is doing.
Totally wrong.

Don't you understand that your 'argument' can be more used against you? If the Germans are at the top of military industry, why don't they themselves field a large and powerful army? Because they are only allowed to by 'others' under certain geopolitical circumstances.
Wrong.

You seem to have forgotten Turkish Navy uses german submarines and frigates and desires german engines for tanks and warships.
Not to forget warheads ToT, we use in our missile. Which less of you knows.

You forgot the most important ones: Bring peace to the middle-east and create a middle-east economic union and military alliance just like EU and NATO where every country acts as a shield for each other and most importantly, try to go back in time to make sure Turkey is among the first nations to industrialize and modernize.

Just minor things needed to make Turkey just like any other western-European nation! They can do it! ;)

Here is the Merkel's humble office with look from the 90ies.

Germany appears to fail in diplomacy:p
Merkel's humble office is actually located in this not-so-humble building called the Federal Chancellery:

Holding government events in prestigious, old buildings is nothing unsual in Germany:

There're many libraries around the world filled with scientific journals and books debating these types of settings in the context of demonstration of power, strength and might. You can find such structures even in well-known and very equal, liberal democracies as Island or Norway because these state-owned premises are representing much more than mere concrete, glas and steal.

Personally, I do believe that the Turkish government has the right to erect constructions and other highly prestigious buildings. However, it's a miserable timing and financially irresponsible to start a project like this in the middle of a crisis. I'm against it (for now).
