This is unlikely to happen. At best, it'd be a couple of more squadrons of Rafales for IAF along with 36 Rafale-Ms' for IN

If you obtained this price from the recent report of 97 Mk-1As' costing $7.8B, that isn't the unit cost since it potentially includes long term maintenance and spares contracts, set up of required facilities, weapons etc

It costed IAF around $40-45m per jet for Mk-1 and I assume the Mk-1As' should cost an additional ~$10m

Moves in the last few days may make it possible to happen. India has realized US will provide us no support in event of war, and that they have to maintain minimum credible defence, forget offense. It’s possible, they may move forward with 114 & somehow find a way to fund Mk2, AMCA , Ghatak UCAV & possibly TEDBF (not approved yet).

An engine deal should be done this year.

How many times have I heard that sort of thing? Such and such will be done before such and such date. The date arrives without it having been done and without comment. I do wonder whether acknowledging failure is too much to stomach so it is hidden/forgotten only to be repeated again and again.

Tejas MK3 Twin Engine to Replace Su 30 MKI After 2045

That is TEDBF AF version. But it would be AMCA that would be replacing Su30. We would be forced by China to induct atleast 250 5th gen fighters.

nope it will be a wrong idea to replace su30mki with amca, see what usaf is doing it is flying f16, f15, f18 and plans to continue fly them till at least 2070 almost 100 yrs why simple these jets can carry variety of ammo and carry out multiple missions and are cheaper to operate than F22/F35 that cant operate in variety of missions and can carry limited payload in comparison to f16/18/15. i say again using 5th gen jets for most of the missions is like using a sword to cut veggies

Any update on engines? I think GE is supposed to start shipping the 11 more promised for 2025 round about now.

IMO India would never gain 100% sovereignty developing an engine in conjunction with any US company. Perhaps that would not happen with RR or SAFRAN either. I think, however, that the promise of 100% from RR or SAFRAN (of whatever) would result in India getting closer to 100% than it would from GE.

62,000 cr INR ~ 7.3 billion USD.

In a major boost for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Make in India in defence project, India on Tuesday cleared the project for buying 97 LCA Mark 1A fighter jets for the Indian Air Force.

The final approval for the acquisition of 97 LCA Mark 1A fighters was given by a high-level meeting today and will pave the way for Hindustan Aeronautics Limited to produce the aircraft, defence sources told ANI.

This will be the second order for the LCA Mark 1A fighters, as the government has already placed orders for 83 aircraft a few years ago for around Rs 48,000 crore.

The programme will help the IAF to replace its fleet of MiG- 21s, which are finally being phased out by the government in next few weeks, they said.

The indigenous fighter aircraft programme, fully backed by Defence Ministry and Air Headquarters is set to be a big boost for promoting indigenisation as well as give major business to the small and medium enterprises engaged in defence business across the country, they said.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been pushing for the revival of the HAL, which has bagged orders for building all types of indigenous fighter aircraft, helicopters, along with the engines for them under his government.

The Prime Minister had also undertaken a sortie in the trainer variant of the indigenous fighter, which was first-ever sortie by the Prime Minister of India in any combat aircraft.

The plan to acquire 97 more LCA Mark 1A fighter jets was also announced first by the then Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal VR Chaudhari on foreign soil in Spain when he told ANI about the mega plans to boost the indigenous fighter aircraft orders.

The LCA Mark 1A plane has more advanced avionics and radars than the initial 40 LCAs being supplied to the Air Force.
The indigenous content in the new LCA Mark1As is going to be more than 65 per cent.

The programme has been the harbinger of the Atmanirbhar Bharat and Make in India initiatives of the nation. More importantly, it is a flag bearer of India’s self-reliance in the aerospace sector.

The HAL is also set to bag deals for buying over 200 LCA Mark 2s and a similar number of fifth-generation Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft

Once ordered, this would bring the total number to 220 airframes (Mk1/1A) if you combine fighters & two-seat trainers.

Where Tejas is concerned, you paint a rosy picture of a programme that has been riddled with setbacks and failures, now finally delivering a quarter of a century late. We are where we are - on the brink of the Tejas programme producing tangible results. I say that because I see the Tejas Mk1 aircraft as below spec fighters which acted as stepping stones towards a design that did meet requirements.

With the current uncertainty concerning US engine supplies, do you have any suggestions regarding what India should do to counter the possibility of F404 deliveries being inadequate or conceivably interrupted? I propose designing an EJ200 version of Tejas. Costly, time-consuming but less likely to result in Mk1A production being brought to a halt by US actions. Of course the ideal solution would be for India to produce its own engine but over the decades GOI has refused to make a serious commitment to doing that, so there is no Indian turbofan available.
