I remember this in the news around the early 2000s, just after East Timor was officially established.

Amazing what a far wealthier and powerful country can still choose to nitpick and exploit on an impoverished one.

Australia didn't need these energy reserves, it would be doing great without them....but it would have made world of difference for East Timor (of course dependent on its govt corruption still).

If I were Australia I would just consider dropping contest of the issue as a start-up aid to East Timor.

What Made it is funny Indonesia as one of the previous claimant of the sea area and former number one enemies of each East Timorese actually abandon her contest over Timor gap and completely going out of East Timor business. Instead doing business only diplomacy style, but the coming of China indeed made many people in Jakarta is at edge especially when East Timor offered them to build military outpost on their soil.

I would have been pissed, and enforced worse possible trade route on Australian ships if they used Indonesian and Timor waters. Enforced control on all trade ships from Australia and such.

Not much to be done after being played like that, except keep reminding your young people of this history.

I think it's the right choice for E.T. to get help from China.

Good for Australia... When you have a bunch of primitive and uneducated tribes, that are corrupt as hell, the best thing you can do to them is to exploit the shit out of them. :D

Which is what had lead to China now literally knocking on Australias backdoor, and Australia not being able to talk to E.T. because the door gets shut in their faces.

Since white man did that, US, UK, anyone else gets treated same way.

I really hope that E.T. adopts Chinese Mindset. TBH it's effective and ruthless. with regards to maximizing your national gains.
