Post-AUKUS, France turns to Indonesia, eyes Rafale jet sale

By John Irish

"This trip is about reaffirming France's commitment to the Indo-Pacific ... and to intensify the relationship with Indonesia," a French diplomatic source told reporters in a briefing ahead of Jean-Yves Le Drian's two-day visit.

Key to developing that relationship will be closer military cooperation. Indonesia wants to boost its defence capabilities, including with the possible purchase of submarines, warplanes and warships, amid ongoing tensions with China in the disputed South China Sea.

France has been negotiating with Jakarta for several months the sale of 36 Rafale fighter jets. It signed a letter of intent in June, although officials do not expect a deal to be agreed before the end of the year due to financing issues."

Can we just go to the win-win situation France-UAE for Rafale and US-Bahrain for F-15EX lmao.

I think Rafale is already too far to get ditch, we already sign a contract afterall although not yet final, and i can imagine a diplomatic tension with France if we somehow ditch Rafale for F-16V the france the definitely will go apeshit if it happen. Way too much losing in a short time

Although i must say F-16V and F-15EX is the best and most ideal option for TNI AU. But still i think we need a non-US fighter jet, Just in case... the "unthinkable" happen

This is the same website that said TKMS have an audacious plan to make the German shipbuilder indispensible to Jakarta, which turns out to be just U-209NG.

Last paragraph :

"Highlighting just how angry Paris is with Canberra, a two-minute video announcing Le Drian's trip to Indonesia outlined its Indo-Pacific strategy naming numerous regional countries with the exemption of Australia."

The mentioned video :

And how do you expect us to pay not just for procuring it, but maintaining them to keep the flying?

The Sukhoi's have a hard time getting flight hours just because they're so costly to operate. Are we just going to keep borrowing money just to keep Prabowo's prestige project flying?

Just take those Vipers 70/72 and a squadron worth Eagle 2 or Strike Eagle MLU.

In 1991 we get the embargo from USA and European Union. Only weapon from Russia that should be considered as diversification strategy which is due to CATSAA is impossible to get particularly for big tickets order ( jet fighter, frigates, etc).

We only have 1.1 billion USD approved foreign loan for MRCA program (2020-2024), only enough for 1 squadron of F16 V. Enough to fill our previous F 5 squadron which is in dire needs to get new fighters. This is I think what General Andika wants, same type ( 33 F16 that we currently have) but with added technology, efficient acquisition. Be realistic.

That's why they bring UAE and Qatar into this, aren't they?

The problem is Rupiah Murni Pendamping (RMP) to back the foreign loan absorption. Budget for defense equipment acquisition for MoD and Police is around 16.7 trillion Rupiah each, this figure is unlikely to climb as we are going to decrease budget deficit gradually into 3 % of GDP in 2023.

There are many priority programs within Armed Force acquisition, not just MRCA program. The priority program for Air Force in relation to MRCA is to fill F 5 squadron with new fighters (1.1 billion USD). I have posted the program and the figure already in older post.

There is also President instruction to have at least 50 % of the budget for local defense industry equipment/MRO.
