Some reporter say the EV technology control of goverment is the main reason.
The other reason is the rare earth cooperation between turkey and US, BYD has many patents related to mineral refining, and some people are concerned that technology transfer could serve NATO.
Of course, these claims are unsubstantiated and based only on hearsay. It's more likely that BYD simply doesn't have enough manpower, and the Hungary factory is just closer to Europe.
BYD has almost completed its first European based plant in Hungary and already looking for the second one. Everybody say it’ll be Italy or Spain. So, we can comfortably dismiss NATO as a strategic excuse since all the mentioned countries are NATO members to begin with.

I‘ve seen some Turkish auto industry experts opinions on social media where they suggest that Turkish manufacturing costs are well above Hungary. IF true, that’s a more logical explanation. VW and Toyota had already left Turkey long time ago. One European and one Japanese and now a Chinese company.
It’s not really easy to explain all these departures on political grounds.

It’s not really easy to explain all these departures on political grounds.
Toyota are currently operating a factory in Turkey as we speak.

Volkswagen is struggling to stay profitable and never had a factory in Turkey to begin with. VW Group has been fumbling the bag, don't ask about Audi's and especially Porsche's profit margins

And if you look at BYD's sales in Europe it's obvious why they didn't go through.
Their sales in Europe in 25 stand at a meager 188k - meager for BYD's stated goal of wanting to become the world's biggest automaker.
They already have what people call "overproduction" in China and are looking to export. Hungary is producing Dolphin surfs (B segment) right now. it makes no sense for byd to open another factory in The European Customs Union. They screwed over the Turkish state with this though. If I were to buy a car in Turkey today, id go with a Toyota for Hybrids/ICE or Togg for EVs (the latter out of patriotism. if I had no soul it'd be a Tesla.)

The cars seem to be good quality, and they are significantly more affordable than western-made EV's. They will probably do well when they come to Canada.

There's a bit of noise in that article I think in terms of the reasons provided, I don't think the decision is political having to do with the Uyghurs or air defence systems.... This is treated as a side note but it really is more convincing as to why there is pivot:

As far as Chinese cars go in general - the Chinese keep their best stuff in their own market. For example, he byd han L has been in China for over a year meanwhile you can't buy that in Europe still. Same goes for Denza - yet. When all you get is outdated BYDs and MGs, of course people think they're trash


I'd absolutely have a Zeeker 8X though. Or a Yangwang.

Ahlatshah makes an excellent point about historical continuity. The ASELSAN 1919 was a massive milestone back in the late '90s, and it’s a shame we let that momentum slip away. If this new cooperation with Türk Telekom delivers a truly hardened, secure phone with an on-device NPU and an isolated crypto chip, it could easily secure the domestic B2B and public sector markets right out of the gate.
The civilian market will be the real test, though. People want competitive hardware, but they also want a smooth, clean user interface that isn't bogged down by tracking scripts or intrusive bloatware. It’s honestly the same reason why so many desktop users rely on a clean utility to free block ads on chrome—nobody wants their hardware performance or data plan swallowed up by unvetted digital noise. If ASELSAN can deliver that same level of clean, lightweight, and locked-down privacy natively on a smartphone, they’ll have a massive selling point against foreign competitors.

Yes, Turkiye is developing its first national AI chip, and the government has already announced funding, infrastructure plans, and R&D programs to make it happen. That part is true.

But the chip isn’t on the market yet. This is ongoing development, not a finished product.

Any update on rumored aselsan DUV lithography machine project ? It is very crucial for Turkish technological sovereignty .
There is no announcement about it but perhaps this video is telling of what they are using to make chips. Or does it look like chip packaging where they put the chip die in a chip container with contacts.

No, there’s no confirmed news about any ASELSAN DUV lithography project. Nothing from ASELSAN, nothing from TÜBİTAK, nothing from any Turkish chip‑related company that suggests a domestic DUV machine is in development. If such a project existed, it would be a national‑level announcement ...and we haven’t seen anything like that.

The only organisations in Türkiye that could theoretically attempt something in this direction (or have hinted at interest in semiconductor tooling) are:

ASELSAN — strongest R&D base, but no public statements about DUV.
TÜBİTAK BİLGEM — involved in semiconductor research, but nothing on lithography machines.
EON Photonics — operates a cleanroom and works in photonics; closest to the optical side.
YongaTek — chip design house; not manufacturing equipment, but part of the ecosystem.
ElectraIC / Mikro-Tasarım — ASIC/FPGA design; again, not tooling.

Right now, Türkiye’s semiconductor push is focused on design, packaging and materials. not building full lithography systems. A DUV machine is a massive industrial undertaking — only a handful of countries have ever done it.


So while there’s no official DUV program today, the groundwork being laid by ASELSAN, TÜBİTAK, EON Photonics, and YongaTek shows that Türkiye is positioning itself for deeper semiconductor sovereignty in the future. Whether DUV is on the long‑term agenda or not, the ecosystem being built is the necessary first step.

From EON Photonics website:

Eon Photonics has 3 clean rooms: class 10,000 (250 m2), class 1,000 (350 m2) and class 100 (120 m2). All semiconductor processes carried out by Eon Photonics are carried out in these clean rooms.

Delicate clean rooms, which are built at world standards, are the first cleanroom in Turkey in terms of private sector.

These are pretty cool news as I see it. I hope we can lay some more rail network from Black Sea regions to Mediterranean sea so it's becomes easier and quicker to transport from north to south, also some more rails from East to West :)

We need a lot more railways in general, train are still the best way to transport, well, pretty much anything you want, but especially military equipment.

It's good they are investing in tech but not everything is drones. We need to diversify this interest to other areas. Especially to civilian products.

"AI Factories" Will Elevate SMEs and Entrepreneurs

According to information obtained by an AA correspondent, within the scope of the "Turkey Artificial Intelligence Action Plan" for the period 2026-2030, special investment plans in the field of artificial intelligence are being implemented under the coordination of the Ministry of Industry and Technology.

To achieve the goal of creating an economic value exceeding 1 trillion Turkish Lira by mobilizing public resources and private sector investments in line with common goals, public budget, private sector investments, international funds, incentive mechanisms, and public-private partnerships will be used.

First AI Growth Zone to be Declared Within a Year
To accelerate large-scale data center and artificial intelligence investments, the process of creating "AI growth zones" with pre-prepared energy, land, and telecommunication infrastructure has begun.

These special status zones, which will have redundant high-capacity fiber connections with accelerated permit and licensing processes, will house "AI factories" that multiple companies can utilize simultaneously.

Factories powered by low-carbon electricity will combine large-scale computing capacity with data fields, model development tools, testing environments, technical support, and product development services. Key or leading investors and operators (anchors) will be expected to allocate capacity, provide mentorship, and contribute to the local ecosystem for SMEs, startups, and researchers.

The goal is to announce the first growth zone and select anchor investors within a one-year period, with at least one zone operational with its first phase capacity by the end of 2027.

By the end of 2028, it is projected that at least 5 growth zones will be announced, at least 3 of which will be operational, and at least 3 regional centers of excellence and 6 access points will be opened. A 70% utilization rate is aimed for in operational capacity.

Thus, it is envisioned that SMEs and entrepreneurs will be able to advance their skills through AI factories.


A Two-Fund "AI Financing Ladder" will be established


An "AI Financing Ladder" consisting of two funds will be created to support the process ranging from basic research to the scaling of startups.

The National AI Research Fund will support basic and applied research and early-stage projects. Through this fund, at least 10 billion Turkish Lira will be allocated to projects, and at least 40% of the supported projects will progress to the pilot application or prototype stage.

Domestic startups that mature through the research fund or prove product-market fit will be supported through the 15 billion Turkish Lira AI Growth Fund.

The fund will contribute to the investment of at least 20 AI startups. The goal is to mobilize at least two units of private capital for every unit of public resources used.

The fund will operate through three mechanisms: joint investment by public and private investors on equal terms, allocation of resources to domestic and foreign venture capital funds, and provision of borrowing and guarantee support to startups.

The financing mechanism will be implemented under the main responsibility of the Ministry of Industry and Technology, in cooperation with the Ministry of Treasury and Finance, the Strategy and Budget Presidency, TÜBİTAK, and the Turkey Wealth Fund.

1000 AI vouchers for small businesses

At least 1000 AI vouchers will be allocated to SMEs and startups in the first 12 months to help them transform their ideas into products. At least half of the supported projects will be moved to pilot applications in the field, and at least one-third of these will be transformed into permanent products or services.

The goal is to achieve an average increase in efficiency or quality of at least 10 percent in pilots, with a maximum transition period from trial to pilot and a maximum product transformation period from pilot to product in 6 months.

It is planned to mobilize at least $10 billion in private sector-led investments in the field of artificial intelligence and data centers by 2030 and to reach at least 1 gigawatt of installed capacity. The data center and artificial intelligence calls within the scope of the HIT-30 High Technology Investment Program will form the backbone of these investments.

A single window will be established for international investors to complete the preliminary eligibility assessment and investment roadmap within a maximum of 30 business days.

Within the scope of exporting sectoral artificial intelligence models, the goal is to achieve at least 10 licensing or co-development agreements, active partnerships in 3 priority markets, at least 25 corporate deployments abroad, and at least 100 million Turkish Lira in model export revenue by the end of 2028.
