A juicy bombing campaign seems in order here by the American government, in response to their soldiers being killed. Russia already has their hands more than full in Ukraine and can't be of significant help here, without substantially damaging their ongoing war effort. The Russian Air Force is absolutely petrified of the American Air Force / Naval air power. Iran's Air Force is pathetic (in terms of airborne capability) and would present no real threat to American air power. An American / Israeli coalition operating with less personally imposed restrictions could create some fireworks here!

The base is essentially splayed across the border near the border tripoint, so it looks like the kamikaze drone hit the "tower 22" area just inside Jordan. Base AD failed, servicemen apparently sleeping at the time.

Forcing Russia to fully give up on Syria because they have no hope of being able to militarily support a two front war (even if one front is a proxy war) would be a huge win for the West.

The flip side of the argument is that keeping Russian military assets in Syria, makes them less capable of fully focusing on their invasion of Ukraine.

Ultimately, the American goal should be to do whatever stresses the Russian economy and military the most and whatever has the chance to fiscally harm Russian civilians at home the most, driving animosity towards the Putin regime.

On the contrary, according to sources Russia just signed an agreement with PYD on military protection suggesting that PYD is preparing for a possible withdrawal of US forces.

There are mainly two branches of the PKK/YPG. Without entering much details, the PKK/YPG on the west of Euphrates are acting in coordination with Assad under Russian protection.

PKK/YPG tries to ensure the future of the organization by playing with both US and Russia. Their plan after a possible US withdrawal is an integration as a part of the SAA under some level of autonomy. No need to mention that a big part of their oil revenue is by illgal oil export to Assad. Assad also needs this oil as there is a deepening oil crisis in Syrian Government controlled areas.
