[Exclusive] UAE: “We will pay for Indonesia’s investment in Korean-style fighter jets”

If the UAE 's proposal becomes a reality, a trilateral cooperation system between Korea, Indonesia , and the UAE will be established for the KF-21 project, which may speed up the project.

Note the "exclusive". I'm guessing we'll get some official info during the UAE President's visit next month, but I'm not going to like it first because it could be just words, lol.

Nonsense journalist conclusion, how would UAE involvement speed up the project? Every technical testing and evaluation is going as planned. Koreans are doing it alone technically and financially already - out of sheer necessity. Any new player meddling in the development process disrupts ongoing tests.

Best clear cut solution: UAE buys out Indonesia, even take a bigger 40% project share and gets an aerospace production plant set up at home. Buying at least 48 or more KF-21 which would have been produced in Indonesia.

Joint development projects of military transport planes with UAE are already in MOU stage which means further synergies between both partners.

DAPA, reports of ‘KF-21 development cooperation with UAE’ are “unfounded”

Successful first flight of domestically produced fighter KF-21 prototype 6
(Seoul = Yonhap News) The Defense Acquisition Program Administration announced on the 28th that the 6th aircraft, the last prototype of the domestically produced supersonic fighter KF-21 (Boramae), took off from the 3rd Training Wing in Sacheon, Gyeongsangnam-do at 3:49 pm and successfully flew for 33 minutes. The Defense Acquisition Program Administration said on the 18th that reports that the government is likely to join hands with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to complete the development of the domestically produced supersonic fighter KF-21 are not true.

In response to a related question at the Ministry of Defense's regular briefing on this day, DAPA spokesperson Choi Kyung-ho said, "After checking with all relevant agencies and departments, the information is unfounded."

One online media outlet recently reported, citing foreign media, that the UAE could replace Indonesia's unpaid KF-21 contribution.

Other media also reported on the 14th that the Tawazun Economic Committee, which is in charge of the UAE's defense industry acquisition, recently sent a letter to the President's Office expressing its intention to cooperate with the KF-21.

In response to this, an official from the Presidential Office said, "The report that the UAE directly mentioned cooperation with the Korean fighter KF-21 is not true," and added, "Considering that matters related to defense industry cooperation with other countries may affect diplomatic relations, we request that you refrain from reporting." "he said.

Previously, President Yoon Seok-yeol held a summit meeting with Indonesian President Joko Widodo in Jakarta, Indonesia on the 8th (local time) and agreed to work closely together to successfully complete the next-generation fighter joint development project.

The two countries are currently carrying out the KF-21 (Indonesian name IF-X) project to jointly develop a fighter jet by jointly covering a project cost of 8.1 trillion won from 2015 to 2026.

In January 2016, Indonesia paid 20% of the KF-21 development cost, about 1.7 trillion won (later reduced to about 1.6 trillion won), until June 2026, and received one prototype and various technical data, and received the fighter jet. It was decided to produce 48 units locally in Indonesia.

However, after paying only KRW 227.2 billion as of January 2019, the contribution was not paid for nearly 4 years due to budget shortages, and only an additional payment of KRW 9.4 billion was made in November of last year and about KRW 41.7 billion in February of this year.

According to plan, more than 1.1 trillion won should have been paid so far, but Indonesia has paid only 278.3 billion won and is currently in arrears of nearly 1 trillion won.

Haha, the word "exclusive" has stirred our hearts once again. We'll have to wait patiently for 2026, the start of mass production, without impatience.

Global gaming company Epic Games welcomed KAI (Korea Aerospace Industries) as the only aerospace-related company to attend Unreal Fest 2023. At Unreal Fest 2023, which took place at the InterContinental Seoul COEX on August 29, KAI presented "Creating a fighter jet simulation with Unreal Engine 5" on September 1, the last day of the event, which received a strong online response. KAI used Unreal Engine 5, developed by Epic Games, to create a VR flight simulation for KF-21 pilot training.

언리얼 엔진5 장착한 KF-21 비행 시뮬레이션 더 실감 나게 구현해

"The KF-21 VR simulator is designed to be deployed in a unit office space, allowing pilots to train on their own in an FFS-like environment without the need for additional support. Although the system is built on a commercial PC, it can provide terrain imagery and aircraft simulation precision comparable to the FFS. It also provides a VR HMD environment and a normal monitor viewing environment at the same time to facilitate training. Unreal Engine 5's stunning visual effects and special effects, along with various sound effects, made it possible to build a fighter jet training environment in a high-fidelity virtual space."

Afaik, KF-21 Block I will be to a degree multi-role. The detailled future plans are in flux and not fixed.

2024-2028: 40x Block I air-to-air and limited air-to-ground ordnances, into ROKAF service in 2026

2029-2032: 80x Block II with expanded air-to-ground ordnances (e.g. Cheonryong
ALCM, increased sensor capabilities)

~2030s: Block III up to 5th gen standard with data fusion, MUM-T, conformal sensors, internal weapons bay. Unclear is, if they’ll upgrade existing 120x KF-21 or build new ones.

~2040s: 6th gen fighter jet development
