Turkey to Test home-made Air-to-air Missile from F-16 Jet in November

The Turkish Air force will test locally made air-to-air missiles, substitutes for the US-made AIM-120 AMRAAM later this month.

Speaking at the SAHA EXPO Virtual Fair that opened today, Minister of Industry and Technology Mustafa Varank stated that it is expected that domestic air-to-air missiles (Gökdoğan and Bozdoğan) will be tested at the end of the month.

The missiles will be test-fired from F-16 jets of the Turkish Air Force. All ground tests have been completed and the missiles will enter mass production after the successful completion of the flight test program.

The Gökdoğan is a beyond visual range advanced medium range air to air missile (AMRAAM) similar to the AIM-120 while Bozdoğan is a short range line of sight missile. Developed by local research institute, TUBITAK SAGE, the missiles have been under development since 2013.

SavunmaSanayiST: Within the scope of the Presidency's Second 100-Day Action Plan, it was decided to procure 415 additional SOM Cruise Missiles. At what stage are we in regard to the serial production of the SOM Cruise Missile? Is there a problem especially in the supply of the TR-40 engine?

Prof. Dr. İsmail DEMİR: Mass productions continue, there is currently no official attitude regarding the procurement of the TR-40. We already have an engine that will continue production for a certain period of time. There are also alternative engine studies and supplies. Some minor design changes to the alternative engine may eventually be required. This has already been studied by my friends. In this respect, there is no problem in the short term, I can say that we have taken measures to solve it in the long term.

Seems like KALE Group having hard time pulling it off while we too are having hard time waiting for ages. Hope it will come off as expected and wont fall through. I have been critisicing the officials for long time for not involving TEI in this work.
Congratulations @SavunmaSanayiST.com

We have a good inventory of SOM I think. The deal about the engines gave fruit and I don't think mass producing SOM with domestic engine is an urgent matter at this time but for middle to long term development and integration of national engine is a must. Further studies are also required in these matters as who knows... maybe our engineers will come up with even better solution but they need time.

If there were problems with the TR40 delivery we would not have as many firing tests of the SOM and ATMACA missiles.

Savunmasanayist: Can you give me information about the latest situation in which Gezgin missile to release a top league in the area of cruise missiles in Turkey

Prof. Dr. İsmail DEMİR: GEZGİN, of course, will be a system that has a longer range and can carry more useful loads. In that regard, again, the engine is the main element. We are working on the engine, we are also hopeful about the design after the engine because a lot of experience has accumulated. These cruise missiles; They will perform various functions in various ranges and capabilities. So just talking about an air-to-ground SOM; We talked about the ATMACA to be launched from sea to sea, and soon its submarine-launched models may emerge, again, cruise missiles launched from land to land. Our roadmap on that issue will continue.

Well, we've been saying that for a while, so question is do we still have that many engines from France ?

Answer is because simply we already integrated it and using it. SOM and ATMACA was designed with TR40, although it can use different engine with small modifications.

Two questions savunmasanayist forgot to ask Mr Demir were ;
1. When the sea targets version of SOM and of course the Som-j will be ready for delivery?
2. What has happened with Bora2 ?

SOM C1 and C2 will be able to hit moving sea targets.

SOM-J is in development. If there would be a naval launched variant of SOM it would be based on SOM-J.

Ballistic missiles developments are usually announced way later but we very likely have at least have a 500-600+ km ballistic missile at this point.

Yes. We know this. But when will they be ready? Have you any idea?
Som-j should have been ready a long time ago. OK, because of f35 not being available, the urgency is no longer there. But why is it taking so long for SOM C1 and C2? Are they improving them further?
SOM B is ~660kg. The range given for this air launched missile is very conservative. Although it is ~800kg in weight , Atmaca is surface launched and has to overcome gravity as it is launched and reach it’s cruising speed; all of which consumes a lot of fuel. But still Atmaca is expected to reach ~+220km targets with maximum range of~360km.
so how come SOM range is +250km? Especially when it is launched from a platform at 30000+ft altitude travelling at around 0.9 Mach. Then it glides like a HGK. But only manages 250km!!!

Why should everything be spilled in internet and media, why do you expect it?
There are secrecy on certain projects and we better get used to this secrecy, some project might seem to be delayed, postponed, inferior but in fact there are progress' which should be kept secret, at certain projects we may not exactly know the maximum range or true capabilities.

As long as Kale keeps improving the engine it would be acceptable as the engine will be better in time. And if emergency needs come up the engine could be produced with whatever performance level it can provide. That is given that everything that needs to be worked on can already be achieved to a certain degree and can be put together at a short notice.

Air launched cruise missile(s) range is

Missile Range (250+ km) + Aircraft Operational Range
