Roketsan MD Murat İkinci has made another statement reiterating the final speed of Tayfun Block 4 to be in excess of Mach5 when it hits it’s target:
“All ballistic missiles can actually reach speeds exceeding 5 Mach. The crucial point here is that they can travel at 5 Mach throughout their flight, and the target can be hit at a speed of 5 Mach. In this sense, the TAYFUN Block-4 is a hypersonic ballistic missile. This missile, as an idea, is a continuation of the TAYFUN, resulting from our own R&D efforts.
Why nobody is asking him how the missile is managing hypersonic speed at terminal stage? There is only one logical answer to this question, and that is it has propulsion during the the last 15-20 km of its downward flight. To do that it must have a reserve tank of fuel and that it‘s engine restarts before terminal stage.
This particular feature will render this missile close to impossible to intercept especially if it has manoeuvring capability during flight too. (One of the prerequisite features of “hypersonic missiles” is defined as manoeuvring capability.)
He also stated that Tayfun missile is already in serial production stage and the family of it will become bigger in variety.
