Al Andalus was ruled by Arabs but as the Ummayad dynasty of Al Andalus collapsed into various Taifas. Power of Al Andalus passed from Arabs to the Amazighs.

Or it was mixed either way. When looking into the history of Al Andalus lots of tensions between the Arabs and the Amazighs. You could say these tensions helped the Christians in the long run.

Interesting how Turkic mercernaries called the Ghuzz served in Al Andalus.

Despite their small number its interesting to see Turks make their way into Al Andalus and the Maghreb.

The muslims that conquered andalus was the amazigh. Through the history of andalus you see frictions between the arabs and the amazigh because of the amazigh feelt like they didnt get the high positions when ruling andalus. The fall of andalus took place because the muslims forgot their purpose on life. Wish they would expand more north into france, even tho france paid taxes as a form of protection against any invasion.

After the fall of Granada in 1492, the Ottoman Navy saved large numbers of Muslims from Spanish shores and brought them to Safety in today's Algeria and Tunisia.

Tariq ibn Ziyad was a Amazigh while Musa Ibn Nusayr was an Arab.

Both got their command taken away from the Ummayad caliph also they passed away as poor men.

They did not deserve that all. Shows what aholes the Ummayad caliphs were apart from Muawiyah and Omar Abdulaziz.

Alot of politics bro. Umayyad as other muslim empires did alot of good, but bad to. They are not infalible, and you see alot of peoole that want to be in charge. Tariq ibn ziyad wanted to conquer more to the north, but they told him not to go further.

After having conquered Ifriqya (Tunisia), the Almohads find Turks among the captured enemies. For their bravery, the caliph Moulay Yaqub al-Mansûr pardoned them and sent them to Morocco where they will form a new military body: the Ghozz guard.

These Turks in the service of the Almohads 🇲🇦 will take part in the battles against the Christians, in particular during the victory of Alarcos in 1195, For their loyalty and bravery in combat, they will even be assigned qurā (hamlets) in Andalusia.

According to historians of the medieval era including the famous ibn Khaldoun, Morocco would be the first country in the Western sphere where a black powder cannon was used during a military siege. The events would have taken place during the siege of Sijilmassa by the Merinids in 1274, a painting was even painted by a French artist to illustrate the event

On July 20, 1279, during the night, a Marinid commando crossed the Strait of Gibraltar and infiltrated the naval base of Algeciras. The Spanish soldiers there were killed and the ships burned. In a few hours, Castile lost its entire military fleet.

We often hear about the heroic battles of Sagrajas (1086) & Alarcos (1195) won by the Almoravids and Almohads but we hear much less about the resounding successes of the Merinids in Andalusia...

After the fall of the Almohads , Al Andalus once again fell into a period of instability. This fall led, from 1226, to a new period of domination of the taifas, small independent Muslim kingdoms. Among these Taifas, only the Taifa King of Arjona manages to resist the reconquest of the Christian kingdoms He negotiates with them and creates the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada. Meanwhile, in Morocco, the Merinids succeed the Almohads. In 1275 the Nasrid was plagued by civil wars, and the Christian kingdom increased their raids.

Faced with this desperate situation, the King of Granada has no choice but to call for help from the Merinids This was obviously not the first time that the Moroccans crossed the strait to save Al Andalus The Almoravids & Almohads having done it several times before. The Merinid King Yussuf Yacoub Abd Al Haqq accepted and landed his troops on the peninsula in 1275. Nuño Gonzales de Lara, the commander of the Castilian army, therefore prepared his troops to face the arrival of the Moroccans. The Battle of Ecija ended in disaster for the Christian troops. 18,000 Castilians are killed. The Archbishop of Toledo tries to get his revenge which leads to another defeat for the Christians in a timeframe of 2 months, losing the battle of Martos. The two cities have a military garrison, and the rest of the troops return to Morocco.

After these victories, the Merinid troops took control of Al-Jazira Al-Khadra (Algeciras) and Jabal-Tariq (Gibraltar). However, the Merinids had to return immediately to the peninsula after King Alfonso laid siege on the Bay of Algeciras with 24 ships and 80 galleys. They also sent 30,000 knights to surround the city For more than a year, the Castilians besieged the city without success. 1 year after the start of the Siege, the Marinid Sultan learned that the Castilians themselves were lacking food, and that their supplies from Seville were insufficient. The sultan then decides to form a counter-attack on King Alfonso ordering his commando units to surprise the Castilian navy, anchored at isla verde. This attack, which took place during the night, was an absolute surprise. The boats were barely guarded, and in a few hours, Alphonse's navy was totally destroyed. This new defeat forces Alphonse X to sign a peace treaty with the Merinids. The latter will maintain control over their cities on the Iberian Peninsula for several decades.

The history of the Merinids is often very understated in Moroccan history. The golden age of the Merinids will take them as far as Tunisia via Algiers, and Tlemcen. They were known for their unique architecture, and they made Fez the capital of knowledge, a medieval metropolis, and an architectural pearl.

An alliance between Napoleon and the Empire of Morocco?

According to Thierry Lentz, historian specializing in Napoleonic studies, Morocco could be a particularly interesting partner. Napoleon tried to form an alliance with the Cherifian Empire, to do this, Bonaparte dispatched a diplomatic mission in 1808, led by Captain Burel to meet the Sultan of Morocco at the time, Moulay Slimane, in the hope of rallying the Moroccans in the Napoleonic camp. A thousand-year-old and independent kingdom, it was the only Muslim state bordering the Mediterranean not dependent on the Ottoman Empire, whose three other territories constituted “regencies” governed by Deys, nominally dependent on the Sultan of Constantinople.

However, the Sultan of Morocco declined the offer, unable to betray his British allies. He made the decision to remain neutral throughout this European conflict rather than siding with Napoleon.

The European powers know that the Emperor of Morocco is by far the most powerful and most dangerous of the Barbarys.” - Captain James Riley, 1817.

1806, Sultan Moulay Slimane intervened in Tlemcen to restore peace between the locals and their Turkish besiegers . However, a large number of Tlemcenians, refugees in Fez, refused to return, saying: “We cannot endure the tyrannical administration of the Turks and hunger at the same time! ".

Between 1880 and 1891, France sought to annex Timbuktu by attempting to deal with the region's leaders. But the Tuareg leaders refuse, claiming to be subjects of Sultan Hassan I. Later in 1963 after the sand war between Morocco and Algeria signing of a ceasefire agreement to place together with the president of Mali Modibo Keita. Why did the President of Mali attend and sign? The Moroccans and Tuareg, in Mali and southern Algeria, revolted against the “borders inherited from colonialism”... and demanded the demarcation of the true borders. ︎While, Algeria and Mali, are trying to consolidate “the borders inherited from colonialism”

Almohad empire

O Youssef, I have given you power, and Allah will take it into account; fear Allah and think of Him in your conduct. Watch over the interests of your subjects, for you will be answerable to Allah." - Abu Bakr Senhaji transmitting power to Youssef ibn Tashfin. Almohad empire era.

When Sultan Youssef Ibn Tashfin conquered Andalusia, he did not master Arabic. The Almoravid Sultan needed a secretary who spoke both Arabic and his language: the Berber Sanhaji.

In 1195 the famous battle of Alarcos took place, an epic moment in the history of Morocco, and the Muslim world. The army of Caliph Yaqub Al Mansour composed of +- 40,000 men succeeded in destroying the Castilian army composed of 80,000/120,000 men.His army is made up of the best warriors from the Masmouda Berber tribes of the Atlas, who were at the origin of the Almohad movement: (Gadmiwa, Ganfisa, Hazraja, Haskura, Hintata, Hargha...)., aswell as other tribes.

One of the most powerful military fleets in the history of the Mediterranean is that of the Almohad Empire.

- Port of Rabat: 120 warships.
- Ports of Northern Morocco: 100 ships.
- Ports of Al-Andalus: 80 ships.
- Ports of Oran and Ifriqiya: 100 ships.

Under Yaqub Al Mansour, the Almohad fleet consisted of more than 1000 warships.

The Moroccan Caliph Yaqub Al-Mansur is honored at the Palazzo Pitti in Florence alongside 3 other great names in History

~ Suleiman the Magnificent.
~Alexander the Great.
~ Julius Caesar.

In 1921 the Rif war broke out, the Rifains won many battles in northeast Morocco, while the Jbala from the region of northwest of Tangier-Tetuan region participated in the war. The Jbalas participated in particular in the victorious battle of Ouergha where France lost thousands of men.

Then the great battle of Chefchaouen, one of the biggest battles during the war war, where more than 17,000 to 20,000 Spaniards were killed during the famous "retreat from Chefchaouen". "In pouring rain and a swamp of mud, the three Spanish columns evacuating the city were half annihilated, with an estimated loss of 20,000 out of 40,000 men and an immense amount of war material."

Faced with the successes of the Rifains and Jbalas, french Marshal Lyautey will say as follows: "The Jbalas and Rifains are perhaps the best infantry in the world"
