The Vympel Shipyard has launched the Project 20360M armament support ship "Gennady Dmitriyev" for the Russian Navy.​

“The Navy’s main command is planning to launch serial production of Project 20360M armament support ships. The use of the lead ship Gennady Dmitriyev will make it possible to upgrade and improve future ships of the type. The Navy needs such ships as they can operate on the high seas and in the ocean, including in the Arctic zone, being ice-class vessels,”


Vympel Shipyard

Project 20360M armament support ships are being built on order of the Russian Defense Ministry. They were designed by the Vympel Design Bureau.

The Gennady Dmitriyev was laid down by the Vympel Shipyard in Rybinsk in central Russia in May 2017 followed by the Vladimir Pyalov ship that was laid down in March 2018. There were plans to deliver the two ships to the Navy in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

TEHRAN, Jun. 11 (MNA) – Twenty warships, submarines, and support vessels from Russia’s Pacific Fleet kicked off large-scale drills on Thursday.

The Russian Defence Ministry said the maneuvers took place in the central Pacific, and include exercises on the management of a heterogeneous group of forces at considerable distances from their home bases, the defense of sea communications, and the organization of the interaction of ships and aircraft to search for and track submarines and ship groupings of a simulated enemy, the Sputnik reported.


The drills saw ships sailing roughly 4,000 km from their bases and home operating areas, and include the fleet’s flagship Varyag missile cruiser, the large anti-submarine ship Admiral Panteleev, and the frigate Marshal Shaposhnikov. The Gromky, Sovershenny, and Hero of the Russian Federation Aldar Tsydenzhapov –Stereguschiy-class corvettes, also took part, along with several logistics support vessels and the Marshal Krylov missile tracking ship. About 20 aircraft, including Tu-142MZ anti-submarine warfare bombers and MiG-31BM interceptors, were also involved.

The drills were being commanded by Admiral Sergei Avakyants, the veteran commander of the Russian Pacific Fleet.


Earlier Thursday, Russia’s Eastern Military District reported that a Su-35 fighter identified and escorted a US Air Force RC-135 strategic reconnaissance plane over the Pacific Ocean operating near Russia’s state borders. US aircraft regularly test Russia’s air defenses in the Far East, as well as the Baltic, Black, and Barents Seas, by flying spy planes, reconnaissance drones, and bombers near the border.


The Pacific drills come amid an escalation of tensions in the Asia-Pacific region between the US and Russia’s Chinese partners, which include threats by Washington to station medium-range ground-based missiles in the region following the US withdrawal from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 2019, which barred the creation and deployment of ground-based missiles in the 500-5,500 km range. Earlier this year, Moscow warned that the deployment of such weapons in the region would escalate tensions and “undoubtedly” provoke a response by the Russian side.

R&D work on Project 22350M ships is underway, CEO of the United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) Alexei Rakhmanov told TASS.​

“The work is proceeding smoothly,” Rakhmanov said in reply to a question about the progress of R&D work on Project 22350M ships.

It was reported earlier that the Severnoye Design Bureau integrated into the USC had developed a preliminary design of the Project 22350M ship in 2019. In February 2021, CEO of the Severnaya Verf Shipyard Igor Orlov said that the time for the laying of the Project 22350M lead ship had not been determined yet.

At that time Rakhmanov said that the Severnaya Verf Shipyard would start to build Project 22350M ships after its upgrade. The shipyard is planned to get a new slipway for the construction of green-water warships in 2022.

The construction of Russia’s improved project 11711 landing ships is making good progress​

Yantar baltic shipyard recently announced progress on the construction of the two ships.

It was recently revealed that the Yantar shipyards in Kaliningrad made significant progress on the construction of the two large improved Ivan Gren landing ship class, project 11711.

“The hull for one of the second two Project 11711 large amphibious assault ships has been maximally formed. The hull of the first large amphibious assault ship is planned to be taken to a slipway in late June. The hull of the second ship is currently being assembled. All major contracts for items with a long manufacturing cycle have been completed, taking into account the import substitution program,”


Yantar shipyard

These two ships, Vladimir Andreyev and Vasily Trushin, were respectively laid down on the 23rd of April 2019 with an expected commissioning by the Russian navy in 2023 and 2024 respectively.

They are an improved version of the first two ships of the class, Ivan Gen and Pyotr Morgunov, which were commissioned in June 2018 and December 2020.

A comparaison between the two subclasses of the project 11711

The evolved design features an increased displacement of 7 000 to 8 000 tons compared to the 6 000 of the previous subclass. They will feature a large superstructure to allow for increased deck space. This allows them to accommodate up to four helicopters with the capacity to operate two of them simultaneously.

To allow for all of these increases in capacity and dimensions, the new subclass will be equipped with more powerful engines with four 16D49 diesel engines as opposed to the previous 10D49 model.

These new ships and the Ivan Gren class as a whole, are a central aspect in the modernisation program of the Russan navy’s amphibious fleet. Mainly composed of old assets from the cold war, important efforts have been made in the shipbuilding sector to assure future capabilities.

The Northern Fleet tests its brand new landing ship in the bay located few kilometers from the border to Norway.

The Pyotr Morgunov this week cruised into the far northern bay on the Barents Sea coast few kilometers from Norway. The ship drifted onto the shore, whereupon armored personnel carriers, trucks and a big number of special operations soldiers got onboard.


The landing vessel is the Russian Navy’s newest ship of the kind, incorporated in the Northern Fleet early this year.


According to the Northern Fleet press service, the loading of the Pyotr Morgunov was part of a rehearsal aimed at testing vessel capacity.


Several dozens of vehicles were taken onboard the ship, including more than 30 BTR-80 personnel carriers and trucks, as well as a battalion of special forces from the nearby base of Sputnik.

According to information released by the Russian press agency TASS on June 25, 2021, The Tactical Missiles Corporation (KTRV) has launched serial production of the advanced APR-3ME air-to-submarine missile.

“Serial production of the APR-3ME air-to-submarine missile has been launched. The first batch has been delivered,” Obnosov said. According to the CEO, work is in progress to develop new examples of air-to-submarine torpedoes.

“There are plans to develop a small air-to-submarine torpedo to replace the APR-3ME air-to-submarine missile. The torpedo will be significantly superior to existing models in terms of range,” Obnosov said. According to him, the corporation is currently developing a versatile mine system.

“The versatile mine system provides for target selection in a wide range of parameters and processing of information about targets with the use of modern algorithms, including artificial intelligence,” the CEO added.

The APR-3ME is a new generation of air-launched anti-submarine missiles designed to destroy underwater threats moving at a speed of up to 80 km at a maximum depth of 800 m. The missile can be launched from Tupolev Tu-142ME and Ilyushin Il-38SD maritime patrol aircraft, as well as Kamov Ka-28 helicopters.

The APR-3ME missile has a length of 3.25 m and a diameter of 350mm. It has a weight of around 475 kg and is powered by a solid-fuel turbo-waterjet engine, producing a top speed of 36 m/s. The missile is fitted with a HE (High Explosive) warhead coupled to a three-mode fuse (contact/acoustic proximity/time delay).

Russia's state-owned Almaz-Antey Concern unveiled its latest range of shipborne air-defence systems at the International Maritime Defence Show 2021 (IMDS 2021), held in Saint Petersburg, Russia, on 23–27 June.

Resurs (Resource) is a new surface ship-borne naval air-defence system intended to engage both manned air platforms and unmanned aircraft systems (UASs), including extremely low-flying UASs, at short ranges. The system, which is capable of simultaneously engaging up to five aerial targets, comprises new effectors, a command module, and below-deck firing station and support systems.

Resurs accommodates two types of containerised vertically-launched missiles: the 9M96E for medium ranges and the 9M100E for shorter ranges. The system's modular launcher can accommodate up to eight firing cells, with a total of eight ready-to-fire 9M96E or 32 9M100E missiles. The 9M96E weighs 502 kg, is 4.78 m long, and is designed to engage aerial targets at distances between 1.5 km and 28 km, at altitudes up from 5 m to 20,000 m. Supplied in a container of four ready-use missiles, the 9M100E weighs 200 kg, is 3.66 m long, and can address airborne target sets at ranges between 1 km and 10 km, at altitudes from 5 m up to 4,000 m. The four-cell container weighs 850 kg and is 3.68 m long.

The Project 885M Yasen-M class nuclear-powered attack submarine Novosibirsk has gone to the White Sea for shipbuilders sea trials for the first time, a source in Russia’s defense industry told TASS.​

“On July 1, the Novosibirsk submarine went to the While Sea for shipbuilders sea trials for the first time,” the source said.

The press office of the Sevmash Shipyard refused to comment on the information provided by the source.

Earlier, Head of the Sevmash Shipyard Mikhail Budnichenko told TASS that after the shipbuilders sea trials the submarine would begin state tests. It is planned to be delivered to the Navy at the end of 2021.

Russia’s United Shipbuilding Corporation (USC) has unveiled its newest Project 11711E large landing ship. The presentation of the ship was held in late June at the International Maritime Defence Show 2021 (IMDS 2021) in Saint Petersburg.​

The Project 11711E large landing ship is designed for landing missions and transportations. According to USC, the ship has a full displacement of 6,600 t. The naval platform is 135 m long and 16.5 m wide, and has a draught (with full displacement) of 3.8 m. The ship’s board is 11 m high.

The Project 11711E ship is powered by two DRRA-3700 diesel engines with a power output of 3,700 kW each. One PU100FM bow thrust assists the main powerplant. The naval platform produces an economical speed of 16 knots, a full speed of 18 knots, a cruising range of 3,500 nautical miles (at a speed of 16 knots), and an endurance of 30 days. The large landing ship is manned by a 100-strong crew.

The Project 11711E ships features high landing capacities. The naval platform can accommodate 300 servicemen, up to 13 heavy vehicles, up to 20 medium vehicles, or up to 30 automotive vehicles.
The Project 11711E large landing ship has been designed by the Nevskoe Design Bureau (a subsidiary of USC).

The Russian Navy now operates two Project 11711 (NATO reporting name: Ivan Gren-class) large landing ships. The type ship, ‘Ivan Gren’, was commissioned on June 20, 2018, while the first serial naval platform of this type, ‘Pyotr Morgunov’, was commissioned on December 23, 2020. The keels of two more Ivan Gren-class ships, ‘Vladimir Andreev’ and ‘Vasiliy Trushin’, were laid down on April 23, 2019. The Russian military intensively operates the Project 11711 ships: on May 23, the ‘Ivan Gren’ landed a naval infantry task force and BTR-80 and BTR-82A armored personnel exercises during an exercise.

MOSCOW, July 10. /TASS/. The Admiral Golovko, the Russian Navy’s third Admiral Gorshkov-class frigate (Russian designation Project 22350), will become the first carrier of Tsirkon hypersonic missiles, a defense industry source told TASS on Saturday.

"It is planned that Admiral Golovko will become the first standard carrier of Tsirkons," the source said.

The Admiral Golovko, the third Project 22350 frigate, was laid on February 1, 2012 and floated out on May 22, 2020. The Admiral Gorshkov and the Admiral Kasatonov frigates are already operational. Another six frigates are under construction.

Frigates of project 22350 are designated to fight submarines and warships in oceans and seas and to repel air attacks both independently and within formations. The hull of the frigates is flush-decked. It has a three-island superstructure, one mast-turret and one steel funnel. Stealth technologies were used in the construction to make the warship practically invisible for the radars of the potential adversary. Full displacement is 5000 tons, the length is 135 meters. The speed is 29 knots. The crew comprises over 170 men. Diesel gas-turbine power plant has a capacity of 65000 horsepower. It can carry Ka-27 helicopter or its modifications.

The main weapons comprise two 16-cell universal vertical launchers 3S-14 for Kalibr missiles. The Admiral Gorshkov, the project’s lead ship, is taking part in Tsirkon trials.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin said the Tsirkon missiles, capable of developing a speed of about Mach 9 and with striking range capability exceeding 1,000 km, will enter combat duty in Russia soon.

The design of the new ship was unveiled at the International Maritime Defense Show 2021 held in Saint Petersburg between 23-27 June.

A USC representative told Jane’s that the corvette can carry a mixed armament suite with a Kalibr-NKE missile system and the 3K96-3E Resurs vertically launched surface-to-air missile system. The Kalibr-NKE vertical launch systems (VLSs) are mounted in two four-cell banks located in the middle part of each board. Two 3K96-3E eight-cell VLSs with an ammunition load of 16 9M96E or 32 9M100E SAMs are mounted below deck in frontal part of the hull. At the customer’s request the corvette can be reconfigured as a naval air defense platform with 24 9M96E or 96 9M100E missiles.

According to Almaz-Antey concern, the developer of the Resurs, a system’s container accommodates a single 9M96E SAM or a cassette with four 9M100E SAMs. The Resurs simultaneously engages five targets at slant ranges of 28 km (for 9M96E) or 10 km (for 9M100E) and at altitudes of 20 km (for 9M96E) or 4 km (for 9M100E).

The Project 22160-based light corvette is 94 m long, 14 m wide, and has a draught of 3.4 m. It produces a full speed of 27 kt, a cruise range of 4,500 nm, and an endurance of 30 days. The ship is powered with a 16,000-kW main engine.

The platform also features a frontal 57 mm naval gun, two machineguns, a Paket-E/NK anti-submarine warfare system, MGK-335EM-03 sonar, Vinyetka-EM sonar, a helipad for a 12 t rotorcraft, and Pozitiv-ME1 air/naval target search radar.
