A critical meeting on the transportation of Turkmen gas to Turkiye via Azerbaijan took place in Ankara.

The meeting emphasized the importance of constant communication between the two state-owned companies in order to open Turkmen gas to Turkish and world markets. In the world market, the first phase is to transport Turkmenistan's gas to Turkiye via Azerbaijan, while in the long term, it is planned to export this gas to EU via TR.

This cooperation took place within the framework of the "Memorandum of Understanding on the Development of Cooperation in the Field of Energy" signed on December 14, 2022, and was recently supported by critical meetings in Ankara.

On January 29, a delegation of Turkmengaz and Turkmenpetrol officials led by BOTAŞ Deputy General Manager Mithat Aydın met at the BOTAŞ building with the participation of Turkmenistan's Ambassador to Ankara Mekan Isanguliyev and discussed in detail the transportation of Turkmen gas to Turkey and short and long-term cooperation opportunities between the parties.

Turkey can become a major natural gas exporter by importing gas from Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan (in addition to Russia), importing LNG (from countries such as Algeria and Qatar etc) and exporting these resources to Europe.

Turkmenistan's discovered natural gas reserves of 13.6 trillion cubic meters ranks fourth in the world natural gas reserves ranking after Russia, Iran and Qatar.

Even beyond that, we have the potential to become a major technology exporter** in renewable energy and an important hub/supply center in the European gas and petrochemical market.

Iran has no such capacity. Even the committed volumes are repeatedly cut in the winter months due to cold weather! Turkmen gas via Russia is also not an option for the EU. It is critical that Turkmen gas reaches Turkiye independent of Russia. At this point, LNG transportation/conversion on the Caspian should be on the sidelines as the issue is not only costs for the EU but also diversification of sources. On the other hand, we haven't said anything on this issue yet, and it is a normal first reaction for IR to want to prevent a situation against it in the monopoly game in the region with funny excuses. We will see how the process will unfold.

Independent economic integration with Central Asia and Turkish autonomy is, in my opinion, one of the most critical breakthroughs in the history of the republic. The European Union has decided to invest in the Middle Corridor logistics route. In total, €300 billion will be invested by 2027, including €21.5 billion immediately for infrastructure development.

Turkish States play a key role in this logistics corridor.

Turkiye, within the framework of the Organization of Turkic States, unites the region, including the Central Corridor, and is investing in this region in various fields.

China has already invested heavily in this corridor and continues to do so.

The Northern Corridor through Russia was already closed due to war and sanctions. The Southern Corridor, which runs through the Pacific Ocean and the Red Sea, has been jeopardized by the rivalry between the US and China and the recent Houthi attacks.


The EU organized the Global Gateway investment forum in Brussels on January 29-30. Its aim was to attract €300 billion for the modernization and construction of infrastructure in Central Asia to develop the Trans-Caspian international transport route (the Middle Corridor project).

Brussels identified infrastructure investments as a priority. The meeting was attended by representatives of governments, financial institutions, business and civil society from the EU, Central Asia, the Caucasus and Turkiye.

Borrell emphasized the need for cooperation due to the conflict in Ukraine.

Vice President of the European Commission, European Trade Commissioner Valdis Dombrovskis:

"An 11,000 km long transport corridor should connect our regions with a travel time of 15 days or less. We need to make this corridor competitive. We intend to achieve tangible results. That is why the European Commission and the European Investment Bank will also invest in Central Asia's transport capacity. The relevant memorandum of understanding will be signed later."

The European Union's plans do not end there. The 21.5 billion euros mentioned above are existing funds that Brussels expects to mobilize as soon as possible.

In the long term, they are talking about a figure of 300 billion euros. The European Union will mobilize them by 2027 from public and private investments.

The money will be used both for the modernization of infrastructure in Central Asia and for the construction of the Trans-Caspian international transport route. The "middle corridor" runs along the Caspian Sea from the Kazakh-Chinese border to Europe via Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkiye.

We also have to spend millions of $ to explore, then even more to build the infrastructure necessary.

This is a very long term deal, any payoffs will be far into the future. We have a similar deal with Libya where zero progress has been made.

Also, will oil consumption significantly reduce in ten years?
