Chashma-1 achieves historic milestone

ISLAMABAD: Chashma Nuclear Power Plant Unit-1 (C-1) has operated safely and without interruption for 427 days during Cycle 18, setting a new record for the longest continuous operating cycle achieved by a nuclear power plant in the country’s history.

In a statement, the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission (PAEC), which operates a fleet of six nuclear power plants, said the 325MW C-1 recorded uninterrupted operations, which was also accompanied by strong international performance indicators.

“C-1 achieved a World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO) Performance Indicator Index score of 100 during each of the first two quarters of 2026, placing it among the leading nuclear power plants globally in terms of operational performance, reliability and safety,” the PAEC said.

The achievement reflected the technical expertise, discipline, and teamwork of the engineers, scientists, and other personnel at the Chashma Nuclear Power Generating Station (CNPGS), supported by ongoing guidance from the PAEC management and strict adherence to nuclear safety standards.

🛢 Pakistan launches $6 billion refinery modernization: What it means

Pakistan has taken a long-awaited step toward modernizing its aging oil refining infrastructure. Four of the country's five existing refineries — Attock Refinery, National Refinery, Cnergyico Pakistan, and Pakistan Refinery — have signed agreements with the state-designated entity Inter State Gas Systems (ISGS). Pak-Arab Refinery is expected to follow, according to the Pakistani publication Daily Times.

The agreements provide the contractual framework for a modernization program estimated at around $6 billion. The combined processing capacity of the five refineries is about 350,000 barrels per stream day, and implementation is expected to take up to five years.

The project aims to produce cleaner Euro-V standard fuels, reduce lower-value furnace oil output, and replace some imported petroleum products with domestic production. This should lower Pakistan's reliance on imported petrol and diesel and strengthen the country's energy security.

Why does this matter now?

The US-Iran conflict has disrupted Middle Eastern energy supplies and shipping, driving up fuel costs in import-dependent Pakistan. Last year alone, the country spent $16.9 billion on petroleum imports. The modernization could eventually save up to $1.5 billion annually in foreign exchange — while also improving fuel quality and energy security.

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s efforts to expand agricultural exports to Malaysia have gained momentum, with Malaysia importing an additional 70,000 tonnes of rice ahead of the arrival of Pakistan’s new crop, according to sources familiar with the latest trade developments.

The development comes as a high-level Pakistani delegation of senior officials from the Ministries of National Food Security and Research and Commerce held talks with Malaysia’s key agriculture, rice and halal authorities, including BERNAS and JAKIM, along with representatives of the Rice Exporters Association of Pakistan (REAP) during visit to Kuala Lumpur.

Sources told that the discussions focused on increasing Pakistani rice exports and expanding market access for halal meat and other agricultural products.
