South Korea will begin mass production of a newly upgraded Cheongung 2 interceptor missile after successfully completing a number of quality tests. Cheongung II accurately hit a missile and an aircraft target in firing tests conducted at the Anheung test site in the western city of Taean, in July and August, respectively, according to the South Korean Defense Agency for Technology and Quality. With the successful completion of the quality certification tests, Cheongung II will now enter the stage of mass production. In July 2021, South Korea retired its last MIM-23 Hawk system, phasing it out for the Cheongung Block-1.


Cheongung 2 (KM-SAM) Medium Range Surface-to-air Missile (SAM)

The Cheolmae-2 which is also known as the Cheongung or KM-SAM often dubbed the Korean equivalent of the U.S.-made Patriot missile defense system is a South Korean surface-to-air missile (SAM) system that was developed by the Agency for Defense Development (ADD) with technical support from Almaz-Antey and Fakel, based on technology from the 9M96 missile used on S-350E and S-400 missile systems. Though it was developed in Russia by the Almaz Design Bureau with assistance from Samsung Thales, LIG Nex1, and Doosan DST, localization and industrialization were done in South Korea enough to consider it an indigenous system.



Cheongung 2 (KM-SAM) Medium Range Surface-to-air Missile (SAM)

The KM-SAM is the middle-tier of South Korea’s three-tier aerial and missile defense system. A complete battery consists of four to six 8-cell transporter erector launchers (TELs), a passive electronically scanned array (PESA) X-band multi-function phased array 3D radar (based on the one from the Russian S-400), and a fire command vehicle. The radar operates in the X-band and rotates at a rate of 40 rpm, covering up to 80 degrees in elevation.It can detect targets within 100 km (62 mi) and track up to 40 simultaneously. The Cheongung 2 can intercept targets up to an altitude of 15 km (49,000 ft) at a range of 40 km (25 mi).

Cheongung 2 (KM-SAM) Medium Range Surface-to-air Missile (SAM)

The Cheolmae-2 medium-range air defense missile will be able to be launched from the Korean Vertical Launch System (K-VLS) aboard Daegu-class frigates in a naval role. The Cheolmae 4-H was to be an upper tier interceptor designed to take down ballistic missiles, offering capabilities similar to that of the American Terminal High Altitude Area Defense missile with a range of 150 km (93 mi) and ceiling of 200,000 ft (61 km). Performance levels were to be twice as superior to the Patriot and Cheolmae II missiles, and was expected to be based on the Russian S-400 technology. This role was filled by development of the L-SAM.

The Republic of Korea Ministry of National Defense showcased test footage of Low-Altitude Missile Defense (LAMD) system and Long-Range Surface-to-Air Missile (L-SAM) system. Designed to intercept incoming large-caliber rockets and artillery rounds, the LAMD is dubbed "Korean Iron Dome" and will protect South Korea's capital and other strategic sites. Designed to intercept ballistic missiles at 50~60km altitude, L-SAM is poised to be the core component of South Korea's ballistic missile defense network. It would be supplemented by US-made Patriot, THAAD, and indigenous Cheongung KM-SAM Block-II missile defense systems. This allows South Korea to conduct layered missile defense over its airsplace. L-SAM also provides long-range air defense against enemy aircraft. Although L-SAM was initially intended to reach IOC in 2026, North Korea's increased ballistic missile capability has caused its intended IOC date to shift earlier than 2026.

South Korea's development of ballistic missiles and missile defense systems is one of the ways South Korea survives from North Korea, China, and Russia, which have nuclear weapons.

South Korea's state-owned Agency for Defense Development (ADD) released a successful interception test footage of the developmental L-SAM missile defense system on 01 June 2023. This is the third successful interception out of four tests carried out by L-SAM. L-SAM is designed as an upper-tier interceptor of the multilayered Korean Air & Missile Defense (KMAD) network and is composed of three stages, including the final-stage "kill vehicle." L-SAM is intended to shoot down incoming ballistic missiles at 50-60km altitude and extends South Korea's missile defense capability to upper layer of a ballistic missile flight's terminal phase. In the latest test footage, L-SAM kill vehicle is seen successfully engaging a Korean Ballistic Aerial Target System (K-BATS) in its terminal phase. KMAD also consists of US-origin MIM-104 Patriot PAC-3 and indigenous Cheongung-II (KM-SAM Block-II) missile defense systems, which are designed to intercept missiles at 40km altitude and below. Additonally, US Army operates the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) battery in Korea, which can target missiles at altitude of 40-150km. According to ADD, L-SAM development is scheduled to be completed by 2024 and mass production to begin in 2025. L-SAM will become fully operational across South Korea sometime in late 2020s. Additionally, ADD plans on developing improved L-SAM-II and Cheongung-III (KM-SAM Block-III) in the future.

LIG Nex1 bags US$3.2 billion missile interceptor deal with Saudi Arabia​

SEOUL, Feb. 6 (Yonhap) -- South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1 has clinched a US$3.2 billion deal to export mid-range surface-air-to missiles (M-SAM II) to Saudi Arabia, Seoul's defense ministry said Tuesday.

LIG Nex1 inked the contract with the Saudi defense ministry to sell Cheongung M-SAM II in November, the ministry said.

It marks LIG Nex1's second overseas sales of Cheongung-II following a deal with the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in January 2022.

The hit-to-kill missile system is capable of intercepting incoming missiles at an altitude of about 40 kilometers to protect vital facilities from artillery and aircraft threats.

The details of the contract were disclosed after the defense ministers of the two nations held talks in Riyadh on Sunday (local time) to boost arms industry ties on the sidelines of the World Defense Show.

On the margins the defense exhibition, South Korea's Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) and the Saudi defense ministry signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to pave the way for cooperation in the defense industry and joint weapons development.

Under the MOU, the two sides will launch a bilateral committee to jointly conduct research and development of weapons systems for continued cooperation in the defense industry, DAPA said.

Defense Minister Shin Won-sik has made a three-nation trip to the Middle East since Thursday, which has taken him to the UAE, Saudi Arabia and Qatar. He wraps up the weeklong trip Tuesday.

Hanwha Systems to supply radar of Cheongung-II missile defense system to Saudi Arabia​

SEOUL, July 9 (Yonhap) -- Hanwha Systems Co., a South Korean defense solutions company, said Tuesday that it has clinched a 1.2 trillion-won (US$866.8 million) deal to supply multi-function radar (MFR) for the Cheongung-II medium-range surface-to-air missile (M-SAM) system, which will be exported to Saudi Arabia.

This deal is part of a larger 4.2 trillion-won contract between South Korean defense firm LIG Nex1 and Saudi Arabia, signed in February, for the export of the Cheongung-II system.

It is Hanwha Systems' second contract worth more than 1 trillion won, following a previous agreement to provide MFR to the United Arab Emirates last year.

The Cheongung-II system is at the center of South Korea's missile defense strategy, designed to intercept incoming missiles and aircraft, primarily as a safeguard against threats from North Korea.

Hanwha Systems' MFR is highly advanced radar that integrates multiple functions, such as detection, tracking, electronic warfare, and missile guidance, into a single system.

The company developed MFR for Cheongung-II in 2020 in cooperation with the state-run Agency for Defense Development, with an improved version, M-SAM MFR Product Improvement Program (PIP), available now.

I was cleaning up my cloud and found a photo I missed from last year. It was taken at the 2023 ADEX LIG Nex1 booth.

The Long-range surface to air missile on the far right is the AAM of the L-SAM. It's a shame that the ABM was shown up to the launch scene, but the AAM was not.

Both types are scheduled for mass production.

Iraq has decided to import South Korean-made mid-range surface-to-air missile (M-SAM) system II, known as Cheongung II, in a deal estimated at $2.6 billion, according to industry sources and military media outlets.

Middle Eastern defense and security media outlets reported on Wednesday that the Iraqi government and Korean defense company LIG Nex1 Co. will sign a formal contract next week.

Iraqi Defense Minister Thabet Muhammad Al-Abbasi has decided that Baghdad will soon bring eight Korean-made M-SAM II missile batteries into the country to strengthen Iraq's air defense network, the reports said.

The batteries will be delivered on an “urgent basis,” sources said.

If a deal is signed with Iraq, it would mark the third time a Middle Eastern country has imported Korean surface-to-air missiles, following the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Saudi Arabia.

In 2022, the UAE agreed to buy $3.5 billion worth of the Cheongung II batteries. Abu Dhabi was the first overseas customer of the M-SAM.

Saudi Arabia signed a $3.2 billion deal with an LIG-led consortium for the Korean M-SAM II system in February.

IRAQI MINISTER VISITED SEOUL IN MARCH

In March, Baghdad sent military and technical delegations to several countries to explore air defense options, including anti-aircraft weapons.

At the time, Iraqi Defense Minister Al-Abbasi met with Korean military officials in Seoul and inquired about acquiring three Cheongung II batteries. Korean defense companies responded that they could deliver two batteries initially, sources said.

LIG Nex1's mid-range surface-to-air missile

LIG Nex1 is the main contractor of the air defense system, working in close partnership with other Korean companies.

While LIG Nex1 manufactures missiles and integrated systems, Hanwha Systems Co.produces the radar and Hanwha Aerospace Co. makes the launchers and vehicles.

The multibillion-dollar contracts with Middle Eastern countries solidify Cheongung’s position as one of the most successful Korean defense productsalongside the K9 artillery system.

HIT-TO-KILL TECHNOLOGY

The M-SAM, known as Cheongung, meaning heaven’s bow in Korean, employs “hit-to-kill” technology in which the kill vehicle intercepts incoming threats such as hostile aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles by colliding with them.


The air defense system features cutting-edge radar for simultaneous detection and tracking of multiple targets.

A battery consists of Hanwha Systems’ mobile multi-function radar (MFR), a command post vehicle made by Kia Corp.and typically four launchers, each carrying eight vertically launched missiles in canisters.

The system is designed to intercept targets at a range of 40 kilometers (25 miles) at altitudes up to 15 km, lower than US Patriot PAC-3’s 20 km.

However, a Cheongung missile costs around 1.5 billion won ($1.1 million) – one-third the price of a Patriot missile.

During a 2017 test launch, Cheongung demonstrated a 100% accuracy rate, according to military officials.


The system was designed and developed by the state-run Agency for Defense Development (ADD).

The LIG-led consortium began mass production in 2018. The first batch was delivered to the South Korean military in November 2020. Currently, Cheongung is a core weapons system for the (South) Korea Air and Missile Defense (KAMD) system against North Korea.

There have been reports that the Iraq contract will be signed before that, but this time it remains to be seen whether it's real. From the major media reports, it seems quite likely.

True, the Korean media news are based on local Middle Eastern reports like Defense Arabia. Afaik they‘re notoriously unreliable

As you can see in the corporate disclosure from LIG Nex1, the contract is worth KRW 3.7 trillion, which is roughly $2.8 billion. For LIG Nex1, the important thing now is to fulfill and deliver the orders it has received. Hopefully, they will be produced and delivered well.

L-SAM ABM

The square cell you see next to the ABM is the L-SAM AAM.

The truck is the same, only the missiles on the trailer are different. The AAM is in a square cell because it has a smaller diameter than the ABM and is being considered for integration into the Navy's K-VLS in the future.
